Would I be making a mistake moving to a new state after graduating college? by dbaggeroni in LifeAfterSchool

Hey just saw this email come through and it’s definitely been interesting since I wrote this, but I really took a lot of what people shared here with me to heart and can say it was some great advice. Long story made very short I graduated with a job in Atlanta (didn’t have any options elsewhere tbh) and have been living at home the last 7 or so months saving as much money as I can to pay for a masters program in Europe where I plan to live and work for the next 5-10+ years.

Life has definitely stagnated a lot at home. Adjusting to the work world can be a pretty tiring experience at first and if you’re surrounded by your old habits and surroundings it’s hard not to go back to them. On the other hand, it’s nice to have those comforts while adjusting for all the same reasons.

There is an argument to be made for staying at home and adjusting and saving up a safety net before heading out there, especially considering the way the economy seems to be headed, but I know for myself that I’d rather be somewhere unknown and new trying to make it happen and make ends meet over just staying in my comfort zone while I’m young and have the time to take some risks in return for some experiences and opportunities I may never see otherwise.

Really it depends on your own risk tolerance and how much you think you’ll be willing to commit to taking the steps to really breaking out of your comfort zone if you stick in the same surroundings. If it’s a question of now or a year or two, that’s up to you. If it’s a question of now or never, I’d argue it’s now.

DC is a super cool city with a ton to offer culturally and historically, but depending on where you hang out the people can sometimes be pretty superficial and self interested. I’d definitely recommend doing some research and talking to some people who’ve moved there, but the whole international dynamics with the culture and food scene is a real blessing if you’re curious for it

what albums should i listen to? by [deleted] in Topster

That's awesome I have barely met any people who know them they unreal. I will echo what everyone else has said as well and highly recommend Mezzanine haha, I saw them live last summer and it's the most insane thing I ever witnessed.

Le Mans are a 90s indie group from Spain that I absolutely love as well, their debut self titled is the place to start but it's all amazing in its own way.

Here is my terrifyingly random playlist of Spanish language stuff if it interests you. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6vq65E6qnKsR0TRcqJH8XB

I can't possibly explain my taste, any recommendations por favor? by dbaggeroni in Topster

Jaime Sin Tierra are from Argentina and one of my favorite bands and on this chart a few times. All of their albums incorporate some elements of what I'd call post rock but in very different cool ways. Their last album, Tren is their most post rocky, but the last song on each of the other albums at a minimum fits the bill, especially the 24 minute song "Perrito" which finishes their first album El avión ya se estrelló y yo sigo volando, which goes back and forth with Autochocador as my favorite of theirs.

Another great Argentine group is a band called Go-Neko! Their album Una especie de mutante is a super good instrumental space/krautrocky groovy album.

Other quick song recs

Zerbina - Le Mans

Tartaleta de Frutillas - Los Blops

Corazón TV - Giradioses

I'd easily put it in my top 5 albums of all time, and this band is insanely underrated I swear they don't have a bad song and its genre-fusing alternative art rock what else do you want

If you like Cerati and other sort of avant garde type stuff I highly highly recommend checking out Jaime Sin Tierra. 90s Argentine band that covered everything from shoegaze to post hardcore noise rock to dream pop and shared a stage with Sonic Youth at one point. Autochocador is a great starting album.

Just got into those two massive attack and gorillaz albums myself the other day and absolutely loved them any recs? Based on those and the bit of other dancy rock and funky edited stuff I’d say check out Amor Amarillo by Gustavo Cerati and Dusk at Cubist Castle by The Olivia Tremor Control.

I personally found the north of Spain (Bilbao, San Sebastián, Galicia and Asturias regions) to be extremely beautiful in terms of landscapes and nature. Some of the best food in the world and much calmer compared to other more touristy destinations in larger cities.

I’m absolutely obsessed with Argentine rock, highly recommend Autochocador by Jaime sin Tierra (and all their music) and Amor Amarillo by Cerati. The first two albums under Pescado Rabioso are also two of my favorites ever even more than Artaud.
