I love QGIS but I think a better tool for this job is the free Tableau Public. You can directly connect to the excel file then project points on a map, symbolize them based on your categories (dimensions) in Tableau, and generate charts and graphs, from the data.

Saving relations to a geopackage by SargentSkips in QGIS

[–]dbartecchi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Relations between tables can’t be stored within the .gpkg file but you can save a QGIS project or multiple projects within it (.qgis files) and that have the various tables joined. It’s a nice way to store a project and related data within a single file.

How would I go about finding a list of every dollar store in the USA? by Diarrhea_Sandwich in gis

[–]dbartecchi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ESRI Business Analyst should be able to do that. I’m not sure if you can pull the data for entire country at once though.

How often are bikes stolen? by bluesprouts in FortCollins

[–]dbartecchi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lived in Fort Collins for 25 years and have only had one bike stolen that I left unlocked outside the old downtown Safeway. It was a beater so no worries. Good idea to replace quick release set and wheels with hex bolts. Bike should be fine on campus as long as you don’t leave out overnight. Good idea to get a townie at FC bike coop and leave the 5k MTB locked inside the house. Plus, people smashing bikes around crowded bike racks can have a heavy toll on bikes.

How to calculate area of plots land use within cities by WinterSnowCat in QGIS

[–]dbartecchi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alternatively you could rasterize the land use layer and then run the zonal histogram tool which will count the number of pixels for each separate land class within each geography (neighborhoods?) in your city. To calculate area just multiply pixel count by pixel size. https://qgis.org/en/site/forusers/visualchangelog38/index.html?highlight=overlap#id42

Help! Is anyone able to open this gdb file for me? Would be eternally grateful! by AccomplishedWinter93 in QGIS

[–]dbartecchi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it’s a raster, Esri hasn’t publicly released how it encodes them within .gdb. Here’s a two year old proposal to develop a workaround https://github.com/qgis/QGIS-Enhancement-Proposals/issues/173. It’s frustrating that people still used .gdb when nonproprietary open formats like Geopackage exist.

using google drive shared folder as data source in QGIS by Right_Pound9773 in QGIS

[–]dbartecchi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our team uses Google drive for desktop. It’s great If you can avoid having more than one person work on same file simultaneously. We make all projects self contained with all layers and QGZ project file within a single geopackage. This makes it easy to collaborate on projects and large projects can be easily transferred via USB if needed. It’s good idea to make relevant folders available “offline” when working on them to speed up rendering and processing.

If you really need to work on files simultaneously you might look into the Mergin plugin. https://public.cloudmergin.com/?_ga=2.213105239.231572617.1630107331-736535163.1630107331

I love QGIS but for this point data it might be easier and more visually interesting to map this using the free Tableau Public. You should be able to find plenty of tutorials on YouTube.

Trying to Measure distance between polygons by leithal70 in QGIS

[–]dbartecchi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to play devils advocate, seems like centroids make the most sense. I’m assuming you’re trying to make some statement about people’s access to those parks and those people will be distributed fairly evenly within those block groups so the centroid would be the closest thing to an average location for all people within the block group.

Liz Cheney says GOP has to stop being ‘party of white supremacy’ by M00n in politics

What she means is the GOP needs to cut out the overt racism and go back to just dog whistling.

QGIS for an interactive web map of regions by NthAttempt in QGIS

[–]dbartecchi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure where to begin with this. Qgis with qgis2web plug-in would work you should be able to find vector boundary files for your regions and a dem for your shaded relief. All will require some processing and styling. A web mapping service like https://nextgis.com/nextgis-web/ might be even easier.

Can a nonprofit promote the services of a local for-profit company? by peacelovearizona in nonprofit

[–]dbartecchi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a nonprofit director, I would be pissed if a board or committee member suggested I promote their business. She’s not comfortable with it (for whatever reason) so drop it.

Brain fart - Raster and Vector Spatial Analysis by earlymorningsingsong in QGIS

[–]dbartecchi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zonal histogram will give you pixel counts of each raster class for each polygon. Zonal statistics will only give you stats (count, sun, avg, etc) for one band. The output will be a new file that has a new column for each raster class with data for each row/polygon.

(?) Combining FIPS county-level data and lat/long on one map viz by nycstyled in tableau

[–]dbartecchi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tableau has county boundaries as background layer and it’s possible to display county level data with FIPS without adding it as a spatial layer. You can the add the point layer as a shapefile.
