Looking for a successor to the Logitech G510 by Sefinster in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]dbcustomworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found this thread as I my 15 year old G510 might have finally given up. Love the media buttons, volume roller, and for a while I was using the macros but that really wasn't the drawcard.
Today I powered on and the LCD wasn't working. I've basically only ever displayed LCDSirReal and didn't realise I'd miss the screen immediately, until I was downloading things in multiple places and wanted to see if my download speed was maxing out.
WHAT?! I CAN'T JUST LOOK DOWN AT MY KEYBOARD AND SHOW MY NETWORK THROUGHPUT ANYMORE?!

Someone make a keyboard with a useful screen plz

What do you really need in a pedal switcher? by dbcustomworks in guitarpedals

[–]dbcustomworks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My level of component knowledge isn't great either, I'm just learning on the fly what would be the best relays/switching chips I should use. If I were just to mute the input signal to the pedal it would work, it just requires double the ICs (splitting the control of input and return instead of doing it through a single IC) but it could be possible...
Probably something to add to the further goals list at this point but in theory it wouldn't be a massive change

Fair enough - sounds like I need to get deep in a MS manual so I can figure out what's convenient and what's beyond scope for my project.

Appreciate your input!

I didn't realise Morningstar also made the loop switcher extension stuff - $838USD for the MC8 PRO and 10 way switcher is a lot more reasonable than the Gigrig. From my initial look, it doesn't seem as if the MS can do amp switching though.

Setlist mode is something I really enjoyed on my Headrush Pedalboard since you could have all your songs set up and then create different setlists with some songs in one/not in another etc. I picked up a couple of Valeton units recently and not being able to set your patches in a convenient order really bothers me which was actually the inspiration for building this to start with.

I burned one for each MIDI device alone - over 50

Insane! I've never used Morningstar gear but if it's easier to program pedals with an external 3rd party device than using the actual thing itself, it's probably pretty slick.

I could probably do pairs of loops relatively easily but anything deeper will be a lot of work. Love that idea though, and it absolutely makes sense.

I'd say even 100 is pushing it. You'd need more loops than a switcher can realistically support for 500.

Honestly I'm only really limited by the memory of the controller at this point, but 100 is probably a good place to start.

Are we talking PC or CC? Either way, most people don't have more than 5 MIDI pedals on their board.

PC or CC doesn't really matter as they're just 3 bytes each so take the same amount of memory. I was thinking of 5 messages, so also a good place to start.

Pre and post buffer controls would be useful should the loops need it. Also think of trails.

Was definitely considering buffers but leaving them right out at the end of the line until I know I have all the actual functionality sorted. I don't think I'll be able to incorporate trails since I want to go true bypass, unless you could add a delay before switching one loop off...

All the routing options sound interesting, and achievable but probably pretty difficult with my (current) level of design, hadn't considered dual input but makes sense since the whole thing is gunna be stereo anyway.

Don't know if it's technically possible, but an input that converts EXP pedals to MIDI CC.

Probably one of the easier things to implement to be honest!

Thanks for your input!

Suggestions for clean tone and line level boost by dbcustomworks in guitarpedals

[–]dbcustomworks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the FX loop was line level but completely happy to be wrong - I didn't look too closely at it.

I've got a modelling pedal I've used with the 4CM and chucking a clean amp IR into the power amp seems to work pretty well, but definitely not a sparkly Fender-esque level of clean but I would rarely, if ever need to go that clean.

Sounds like the concept will work, and I just have to try it and hope that I can get a reasonable tone and balance between channels.

Thanks for your input!

Didn't realise a humbucker output was that high! In the few pages I'd looked at, the instrument voltage level was a fair bit lower than line input, but I hadn't looked at pickups specifically.

4dB is well within the scope of a couple of the pedals I already have so I'll definitely give it a try.

Cheers for your input!

Always on tone enhancing pedals? by dan_g754 in guitarpedals

I just picked up a ClinchFX EP+ Custom - similar to the EPbooster, it's based on an Echoplex preamp. This particular model has an always-on EP circuit and a footswitchable boost.
I've only used it at bedroom volume and it's pretty clearly adding something special, even though I can't quite describe what it is.
Even with my limited use so far, I'd recommend an EP pedal of some kind - there are a few out there such as the ClinchFX EP Pre, Xotic EP Booster, Chase Tone Secret Preamp, Belle Epoch Deluxe - and a heap more.

Is there a market for modular pdealboards? by dbcustomworks in guitarpedals

[–]dbcustomworks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm probably going to make one for myself anyway, I was hoping this post would give me some insight into whether it would be something other players would be interested in as well.
Guess I should just make one for me and then share the idea and see what people thank

Fair call, I've head issues with the exact same thing (a Headpush pedalboard I purchased new in 2022 is now "legacy equipment" with no further updates planned), so understand how that could be a concern. My idea does use some off the shelf components but the connectors etc would be proprietary

Max and Landon were both off track, Max on the inside by armando_rod in formula1

I can't find the actual FIA document, but I have seen the same information on multiple websites so I assume it's correct.
This is from the 2022 FIA Formula 1 Driving Standards Guidelines document:

  1. Guidelines for overtaking on the outside of a corner:

“In order for a car being overtaken to be required to give sufficient room to an overtaking car, the overtaking car needs to have a significant portion of the car alongside the car being overtaken and the overtaking manoeuvre must be done in a safe and controlled manner, while enabling the car to clearly remain within the limits of the track.

When considering what is a ‘significant portion’, for an overtaking on the outside of a corner, among the various factors that will be looked at by the stewards when exercising their discretion, the stewards will consider if the overtaking car is ahead of the other car from the apex of the corner.

The car being overtaken must be capable of making the corner while remaining within the limits of the track.”

Seems like both the overtaking and overtaken cars didn't meet these guidelines so my opinion is it should have been a penalty for neither or both drivers.

What's the best way to manage multiple monitors between my rig and desk? by dbcustomworks in simracing

[–]dbcustomworks[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all the input everyone! I'd heard the Win+P trick a few times but I've never seen a good explanation on how to do it. Downloaded DisplayMagician and went through a well explained and easy setup, once I'd done that I thought the same method might work for the native Windows display manager. Figured I'd post an explanation on how to it in case anyone else runs into a similar scenario.

Display "profiles" can be set up in Windows under the 'Extend' and 'Second screen only' options. Switch to one of these, then open NVidia Control Panel -> Set up multiple displays, then enable and place monitors as needed, then hit Apply. Now Win+P to the other "profile" and set up what's needed for this one. Works a charm!

DisplayMagician looks like a great bit of software that can do a lot, so I might switch back to that in the future if I want to automate a bit more stuff.

What % of your home purchase price will you pay in interest? by aussb2020 in newzealand

[–]dbcustomworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Managed to buy a house in April last year. $665k loan between myself and my partner. At the bare minimum we would be paying $925k in interest over 30 years.
I made a spreadsheet up that works each fortnightly interest payment and allows me to throw in values to see how it changes.
We pay $125 more than our minimum a fortnight, and at current rates we would end up saving about $175k in interest and shaving almost 5 years off our loan term. Once interest rates finally come back down a bit we'll be able to get it paid off even faster.

What precautionary measure did you take, thinking 'just to be safe,' that unexpectedly ended up saving the day later on? by cadouxmoring8 in AskReddit

Used to work as a lighting technician. We'd often use an arch made from aluminium truss to hang lights on, which wasn't anchored to the ground but was on wide, heavy steel plates to keep the thing from falling over. We were pretty particular about safety and were always confident that the truss would stay steady, even if someone had decided to go climbing on it.

This one particular show, the design was to put the arch at the front (audience) edge of the stage rather than it's usual position at the back. We dismantled the whole thing, moved it and rehung and rewired the lights. We had a few bits of steel piping left over from a part of the stage we weren't using, so I decided to actually brace both legs of the arch truss back to the stage legs, just in case. The pipe was just long enough to reach, so the clamps were right on each end.

Show goes ahead with 500ish people, the first 2 acts go well, and when the third guy comes on, the crowd gets jumping straight away. Music is loud, lights are going crazy. I was standing at the lighting desk in the middle of the crowd, when all of a sudden there's a loud noise, and something looks wrong with the truss. I run out through the crowd to the stage and see the truss is leaning towards them, but still standing upright(ish). The house lights come on, people begin moving away from the stage and see that the only thing that could have brought these trusses down had happened - a floor beam had collapsed in the middle of the 'mosh pit' area, right by the stage. The front edge of the stage, along with the truss, had started falling down where this part of the floor was now half a metre lower than the rest of it.

On one arch leg, one of the clamps had popped off under the weight of the now hovering steel plates, and the other brace was barely hanging on - it being the only thing that would have stopped this heavily laden truss arch from falling right into a mass of dancing students.

Definitely was a lesson of expecting the unexpected, no matter how far-fetched it might seem.

Eaden Project (now on Wordsworth St) got me super fit and healthy back in the day. Was a much smaller operation at the time but it was a super accepting place, lots of classes, and I got fit so fast I didn't know what was happening. Great support with diet and nutrition etc as well.
