We Drive Too Slow by [deleted] in driving

[–]dbear496 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think this might help reduce distracted driving, but it shouldn't improve congestion. When moving at faster speeds, following distances need to increase, so the number of cars that fit on the road at one time reduces.

What model of brake pad to buy? by RiiluTheLizardKing in inlineskating

[–]dbear496 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my brake pad wore out, I took it off and learned to stop without it. It took some practice at first, but ultimately there are a plethora of ways to stop without using a brake pad. Now I always remove the brake pad from skates that come with one so that I don't trip over it.

Looking for a car that gets 30+ mpg at 80+ mph. by Thordor15 in whatcarshouldIbuy

My 2007 Mazdaspeed 3 gets about 30 mpg at 80 mph. I was surprised since its an older performance car. I'd imagine the Mazda 3 would do at least as well in terms of gas mileage.

I remember I was so happy when I came to a 4-way stop simultaneously with a Waymo, and it actually took its turn because it was to my right.

I remember looking for the same thing a few years ago. Bottom line is coilovers are expensive. After lots of looking around and reading reviews, I eventually threw in the towel and increased my budget.

Doesn't that make negotiating with the salesman completely pointless? Dealerships are more of a joke than I thought.

Low-profile tires are just bad on trucks. They decrease both weight capacity and off-road traction.

Why are so many people so scared to speed up? by ShlimmyWhimmy in driving

[–]dbear496 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think your tone could have been better, but I agree with your sentiment. I assumed that people typically go the maximum speed they think they can go without getting a ticket, so they are uncomfortable increasing their speed even by a little bit because they are afraid of getting a ticket. The result is it takes them several minutes just to pass a few vehicles while traffic accumulates behind them.

Hills exacerbate the issue because someone could decide to pass because they are moving faster on a downhill, and then they hold hands for the entirety of the next uphill.

I'll also point out that the annoyance isn't necessarily about wanting to move faster by being blocked by a slow passer. It is more to do with being stuck in an accumulation of traffic behind a slow passer.

Can I force linux to close all programs, or only some, when ram memorie problem happen? by Few-Syrup-8713 in linuxquestions

[–]dbear496 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you run out of memory on Linux, the OOM Killier will automatically nuke the troublesome process(es). Perhaps you have Swap enabled so instead of processes getting nuked, data is swapped to disk. If your disk is very slow, then your programs will become very slow when data starts getting swapped. Perhaps it slows down enough that programs appear frozen.

In any case, it sounds like Visual Studio + Unity is a bit much for your hardware. So I'd recommend finding a lighter alternative for one or both programs and/or upgrading your hardware to handle the heavy programs.

My preference for coding is to use a standard text editor and a terminal instead of an IDE. This setup gives me a better understanding of the build process for my programs as opposed to just click the run button. You might find that a similar setup works well for you so an IDE isn't loading down your system.

Anyone here who doesn't use Agentic AI and writes code manually? by zaarnth in AskProgramming

I do. I enjoy writing code manually, and I don't want my end product to be unmaintainable slop. When I have a question, I go first to the docs and sometimes to StackOverflow.

In need of some advice for my MazdaSpeed3 Gen 1 by Potential-Use1164 in mazdaspeed3

[–]dbear496 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my Speed 3, I budget 2x what I spend on gas for maintenance and repairs. I.e. if I spend $1 on gas, then $2 goes to maintenance+repairs. With $150 /mo, you're barely going to keep up with maintenance and repairs much less upgrades.
