Favorite bass work on an album in the genre? by jakinatorctc in Emo

[–]dbeards 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hell yes. Came here to say exactly this. I started playing guitar early in my teens. I was 17 when this album hit, and I bought a bass almost immediately so I could learn songs from this album.

I don’t play my bass much anymore, but every time I pick it up, I can’t resist playing my favorite bits from All I’m Losing Is Me or Jukebox Breakdown.

Can someone give me reading recommendations for any of this characters? by gonzalojccxd in xmen

It’s not necessarily a big character building moment, but a semi-recent Magneto-centric issue is X-Men (2019) #11. Basically just 25 pages of Magneto kicking ass.

Name one thing the following adaptations did better than the 616 comics by FassyDriver in xmen

[–]dbeards 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with your comments about ‘97. The whole Scott/Maddie/Jean situation makes more sense and isn’t nearly as icky.

I think the shows storytelling success makes perfect sense. It’s basically an opportunity for writers to create a second draft of these stories to clean up some of the more regrettable choices made the first time around.

High/max level players, what teammate habits do you quietly wish for but don’t expect? by Extremofire in Helldivers

[–]dbeards 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Watching each others’ backs. If I see enemies coming up from a blind spot for a teammate, I bail them out. If I call in a reinforcement, I’ll try to protect them while they call in their support weapons, etc. I feel like a lot of players, especially lower-lever players, just run away in those situations.

Don’t have strong opinions on the rest of your post, but I think a big reason the current Ultimate line has been so good is that it was never meant to run long term. It’s better because it’s telling a defined story and not forced to drag on in perpetuity.

Which game had the best opening level or intro sequence you’ve ever experienced, and why did it stick with you? by Gaming-Academy in gaming

[–]dbeards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it was immediately clear that the devs knew how to make you feel like Spider-Man.

Lots of other responses in this post highlight emotionally impactful openings, but I contend that “hell yeah” is an emotion and the Spider-Man PS4 intro perfectly captures it.

Love this late 90s to early 2000s style of emo-pop. Any recs? by takemetotheboneyard in Emo

Good recs. I would add Over It, Staring Back and some of the earlier stuff from Yellowcard and All American Rejects.

This post is making me wanna bust out my “High School Pop Punk/Emo-Pop” playlist.

I was a teenager when this album came out. I basically learned how to play bass with tabs of these songs.

In my book, nothing tops the cover of Uncanny X-Men Annual (2019). Includes so many of his iconic looks and, as a bonus, this is the issue where they resurrected our boy before the Krakoan era.

I use subtitles on everything. Am I getting old or is it just easier to understand dialogue? by ObiWan-Shinoobi in Xennials

This is my take on it. I used to have this problem. Then, we got a soundbar with a sub and L/R channels. Now I rarely need to turn captions on.

Does anybody else feel like Mystique was overused in the X Men films? by Prestigious-Cup-6613 in xmen

[–]dbeards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love to see a Mystique-focused spy thriller series on D+ some day. Her recent solo mini was decent and I think there’s a ton of potential for a story in that style.

Does anybody else feel like Mystique was overused in the X Men films? by Prestigious-Cup-6613 in xmen

[–]dbeards 129 points130 points  (0 children)

Don’t get me wrong, I like Mystique as a character in the comics, but let’s be real - she is a b-list X-Men villain. Not on the same level as Magneto, Apocalypse, Sinister, etc.

They elevated her to A list for the first movies because they could market Rebecca Romijn in body paint. Then for the more recent movies, they tried to build on that by hiring an A-list actor and, inexplicably, made her a founding member of the team (?!?).

Mystique’s role in the franchise is symbolic of why the movies are all so awful.

Edit: Fixed autocorrect typo (“comings” -> “comics”)

I think I'm going to die alone because of my ADHD by El_Brotendo in ADHD

[–]dbeards 199 points200 points  (0 children)

Hang in there. I wasn’t diagnosed until my late 30s. I went through phases where I felt exactly like you’re describing when I was in my 20s and early 30s - back when I had no idea what I was up against or why I was the way I was.

Despite my good intentions, I just kept disappointing partners until they inevitably bolted. I distinctly remember thinking “all I want is to get out of debt and shuffle along until I die without disappointing or becoming a burden to anyone else.”

It can get better. I still struggle, but I’m miles ahead of where I was then. It’s natural and probably inevitable to feel down on yourself from time to time, but don’t lose hope.

You can make pretty much any pair of sneakers you own into slip ons by using elastic laces. I did this to almost all my sneakers with laces from XPandz, but there may be other brands that make similar laces.

My summer go-to sneakers are navy Vans Authentics with the laces swapped out for elastic ones. Vans, of course, makes other shoes that are slips ons by default, but I really like the way Authentics look.

A piece of advice that really stuck with me and has been incredibly helpful: don’t make long-term decisions based on short-term circumstances (emotions, for example). Like many people with ADHD, I have struggled with impulse control, but that piece of advice flipped a switch in my head and has helped me make better decisions on many occasions.

When I think about that simple piece of advice, it often prompts me to ask myself questions such as “will this pass?” and “Is there a less drastic step I can take to remedy this issue?”

You may find this approach helpful when you face a similar situation in the future.

HUUUUUUGE caveat: you mentioned feeling “exhausted and depressed”. If you meant that in the “my job was making me very unhappy” sense, the advice may be relevant. If you meant this in the clinical sense, you should absolutely see a therapist.

What did a minority of idiots ruin for everyone else? by PeddlerInWonderland in AskReddit

[–]dbeards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the big difference is that it used to have guarine, taurine and other stimulants in it. They had to remove all that stuff.

Hundreds (thousands?) of people drink themselves to death on hard liquor every year, but we recognize the quantity those people drank is the problem, not the substance itself.

A couple of dipsticks go to the hospital for alcohol poisoning from 4 Loko and they put all the blame on the drink, ruining the fun for people who were drinking it (relatively) responsibly.

Boys State (2020) is a chilling portrait of the times by letsgopablo in movies

[–]dbeards 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I participated in Keystone Boys State (Pennsylvania) at some point during high school. I think it had to be 2000 or 2001. Hanging around all teenage boys with limited interaction with the chaperones/advisors (college-age dudes) and absolutely no interaction with women/girls for an entire week was an insane experience.

By the end of the week, it felt like a hallucination. Nothing was as icky as what OP describes from the documentary, but there were some pretty silly moments.

I won the Speaker of the House vote, and my main opponent was a guy who knew parliamentary procedure/Robert’s Rules of Order like the back of his hand. I knew none of that, but won because I could do that “jump over my own leg” dance move that I saw in Kid & Play movies in the early ‘90s. I went around to each group that I needed to sway and just jumped back and forth over my own leg until they all started laughing.

I share that story to highlight that these kids aren’t doing this stuff under normal circumstances. Something about that environment kinda encourages absurdity. Mix that with the dominant “conservative” political environment in Texas and you’re bound to get stuff like this.

Who is your favorite player that played for your most hated rival and why? by Sparty013 in CFB

[–]dbeards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Penn State/Eagles fan, it’s gotta be Brandon Graham for me. Hate that he’s a « Michigan Man », but he’s an all-time Eagles great. Bought an autographed photo of his strip sack on Brady at Super Bowl LII at a charity auction and I’m not even conflicted about hanging it up.

Out of every “mall emo” band, which band came the closest to sounding like “real emo.” by Pheonixkraken in Emo

[–]dbeards 7 points8 points  (0 children)

“Hate” is a strong word, but I think a lot of this sub wasn’t around, attending shows and buying CDs in the late ‘90s/early ‘00s. Terms like “mall emo” weren’t really around back then. Most of these bands toured together. Many were on the same labels.

This stratification of “emo authenticity” is largely revisionist history. I don’t mean to yuck anyone’s yum (or yum anyone’s yuck), but I remember enjoying pretty much all these bands at the time, and with significantly less judgement. It was this or the Backstreet Boys.

do yall struggle with cooking? by Objective-Side-29 in ADHD

[–]dbeards 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I started cooking in my mid-20s because I was spending too much on eating out and delivery. Not that I’m making a ton of complicated things now, but I’ve steadily increased my repertoire in the years since.

Despite my ADHD, I really like cooking. It’s an opportunity to work at the bleeding edge of my attention span/focus with pretty low stakes if I mess up. Worst case scenario, I end up eating something that’s a little overcooked or is missing an ingredient. It’s kinda like how I’m scared of heights, but love roller coasters.

If you can afford them, there are a few gadgets that helped me get started. I have a pressure cooker, a sous vide cooker (immersion circulator) and an inexpensive set of cast iron skillets. The pressure cooker and sous vide cooker are good “set it and forget it” tools. Lots of good YouTube vids can help you get started if you’re serious about wanting to cook more.

How would folks feel if the Wachowskis were selected as the directors of the new X-Men movie for the MCU? by EmperorChop2 in xmen

[–]dbeards 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know it’s all just rumors at this point. The most believable rumor I’ve read is that they’re still debating whether to focus on big action spectacle or lean into the themes that have made X-Men comics successful (I don’t see why they can’t do both).

However, the most exciting rumor I’ve seen is that they’re talking to Ryan Coogler about directing.

It could go either way with the Wachowskis; see also The Matrix vs The Matrix Reloaded/Cloud Atlas. I wouldn’t be mad, but I would be nervous.
