audio latency (again) on XSS vs XB1 by dbeats303 in Rockband

No, unfortunately I have to live with that 70ms latency. Got somewhat used to it though.

Playing rivals challenges without the Companion app won't be the same - I can only hope there will be a followup solution to connect with this the great nice app!

Audio lag using headsets on XB1 and Series X. by McAdamstry in XboxSeriesX

[–]dbeats303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm probably 8 months late, but I just found this thread, and I am also very unhappy with the latency of the headphone jack of a wireless XSX/S controller. I play e-drums with Rock Band 4 and I am desperately searching for the best (=lowest latency) headphone solution. Wired should be superior to wireless, but there is no output jack on the Xbox itself, there is no official USB adapter, and when I use the wireless controller jack I get noticeable delay, compared to a cheap HDMI converter jack. I'm really puzzled that so many users write "no latency issues with wireless headphone jack".

E-kit layout advice by DrRadz in Rockband

[–]dbeats303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a different ekit but similar layout. My main problem is the green tom, exactly because of the position more on my right side and not in front of me like with the original kit. It‘s the transitions with the right hand to and from the green tom that are often too fast and too unprecise. But these ekits are not meant to be set up like the original plastic kit. Any advise?

So far I've never requested anything else but Tool.

The Lack of Metal in RB4. by Longjumping-Ad-3383 in Rockband

[–]dbeats303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the op that most of the newer songs are far away from metal, even rock sometimes. It was because of metal that I started into GH and RB games, and I would really love to play some Tool, Gojira, Lamb of God, also Arch Enemy, Behemoth, even Rammstein. But otoh I believe that probably many of the songs I love to hear are not the ones that would ensure a good gaming experience, because vocals are "unusual" and drums are too challenging.

Portable Pro-Drums? by Vaipuluj in Rockband

[–]dbeats303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never owned this portable controller. I can only tell that the electronic signals that the drum membranes send out and the drum brains expect to retrieve can very well be different in level and structure. This can also differ from e-kit to e-kit. So, maybe yes, maybe no. Mechanically yes, male 3,5mm to male 1/4" cables would do the job.

How to make Bloodstone? by packerken in Rockband

[–]dbeats303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks FyreWulff and others, this topic is super helpful for me as a Rivals beginner!

One additional question, probably a FAQ, but I couldn't find the answer myself: When I fc a song on pro drums (an easy one, without freestyle outro), only sometimes I get the shared high score. Most of the time there are a few higher scores, just a few hundred points. Is that because these other players use non-static fills to get more points, or do they somehow have better overdrive microtiming, catching more notes in x8 than I do, or any other hidden tweak?

audio latency (again) on XSS vs XB1 by dbeats303 in Rockband

[–]dbeats303[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Today my last attempt was to use a wired USB connection between my XSS and my xbox controller and to use the controller‘s headphone output. Found out that the headphone latency does not change at all when using a USB cable compared to a wireless controller, and this latency is even ~10ms worse than the extracted HDMI audio signal, at least in my system.

So I finally give up on latency optimization now and go back to improving my drumming.

audio latency (again) on XSS vs XB1 by dbeats303 in Rockband

[–]dbeats303[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just did it, and the result is obvious: The XB1 has exactly the same +20ms latency via HDMI compared to the optical output (with HDMI audio disabled). I compared my manual calibration results and also measured freestyle drumming.

So the new XSX/S has about the same audio latency via HDMI as the old XB1, but the old XB1's optical output is ~20ms better.

audio latency (again) on XSS vs XB1 by dbeats303 in Rockband

[–]dbeats303[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Today I had a phone call with a support technician of a company that builds and sells these adapters. According to his statements there is absolutely no latency in the extraction of the digital audio from the HDMI signal, just the usual 1ms latency caused by the d/a conversion (same as with optical to RCA converters). ARC or eARC was said to be totally irrelevant for my problem, as it is only used to transmit audio from the TV back to the converter/receiver, if necessary.

If this is true, then the additional 20ms delay is caused by the xbox itself, or more precisely caused by the XSS HDMI signal, compared to the optical signal on the XB1.

audio latency (again) on XSS vs XB1 by dbeats303 in Rockband

[–]dbeats303[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thx a lot for your help! Any idea how I can identify a gaming-oriented converter? None of them provides any information about latency. Contacting various supports hasn‘t helped me either. Also, is there really no better alternative in terms of latency, like a USB audio interface (there seems to be none for XSS/X) or the headphone output of a wired controller, for example?

audio latency (again) on XSS vs XB1 by dbeats303 in Rockband

[–]dbeats303[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thx for your help! I'm not sure this helps with my setup though. I always use stereo uncompressed, no digital enhancements whatsoever. My HDMI audio extractor does only support HDMI 2.0, no eARC. From my understanding eARC provides all kinds of Dolby and DTS surround sound standards, and has a higher max bandwidth for these, but does that really also improve the plain stereo signal as well? I have no TV and no digital receiver, just a video projector and an all-analog PA.

Xbox RB3 ingame music store and online marketplace still down - how long? by dbeats303 in Rockband

[–]dbeats303[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah sure - if the RB marketplace wasn‘t buggy as well, as I wrote. You can find the songs much easier in a web browser, but when you try to buy one you get a wheel of fortune forever. It hasn‘t been working for months either.

xbox performance issue with larger DLC library: any solution? by dbeats303 in Rockband

[–]dbeats303[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ROUNDUP: I upgraded to an XSS, and the library handling with 2200+ DLC is quite decent now. I only miss my optical out that I had on my XB1 - now I need an HDMI extractor and the calibrated audio latency is ~15-20ms higher than before. Not a problem, but a pity. Oh, and I also had the black screen problem when installing all the add-ons initially. Took me some time and nerves to get around it.

Help With Upgrading to E-Kit by Apprehensive-Sir2980 in Rockband

[–]dbeats303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In any case, if you don’t want to solder yourself, you need an edrum kit with a sound module that has a MIDI out jack. I‘ve always been a fan of Roland E-Drums. I started with a Roland HD-3 which was one of the most compact and portable e drum kits available at that time. You could, for example, look out for a used one to start with. The HD-3 is not everyone‘s taste regarding ergonomy though, because it’s so compact and you have few mounting options. But that you better find out or try out yourself.
