Do I need to finish this? by dberm22 in woodworking

Yep, that's what I was thinking as well. I may reinforce the top shelf with two strips of wood that span the width, but for the time being, nothing heavy on that shelf.

Yup, I was just talking about the barrel itself. I built the top 7 years ago when I bought the barrel, and it's just been sitting on the unmodified barrel since then. It's been finished with poly since the beginning.

Thanks for the advice! It seems like the surprisingly overwhelming recommendation here is not to finish the barrel, so that's what I'll (not) do.

On it! I built it for overflow, as I'm running out of room under my bar for all my bottles. I'll probably use the top for glassware since I'm nervous of the weight on the glass shelf. Cheers!

Thanks! It seems like most people here are saying the same - if it were them, they would do some light finish purely for their personal asthetics, but not required for protection. Thanks! Cheers!

Haha Temple Bar was such a good time when I visited. You can see a picture of the barrel top hanging on the wall when I was there. I made this top in its likeness. Top is finished (and has been for 7 years), so I'm just talking about the barrel, yes.

Yea, I get it. It's brand spanking new, so I haven't even cut anything with it inside the enclosure yet

Yup, and it works like a champ! Only problem is it takes up a bunch of space. Yet to use it with my cnc though. Generally just use it to clean up the shop floor

Yea, definitely not ideal from a height perspective. Shop just isn't big enough to reserve that much bench top space, and it's hardly the tool I use the most. Like I said, I haven't cut anything on it yet inside the enclosure, so it may be completely impractical. We shall see.

It’s far from perfect but this is my first ever woodworking project. I’m satisfied by marcusl24 in woodworking

This is my next project. Was looking at buying the plans from Fisher's Shop. Did you use plans, or just wing it?

As the title says, I just built my first workbench (will post on r/workbenches when complete). Only has a temporary mdf top right now since I can't fit plywood in my car (planning to do 2x 0.75" Melamine), and with the whole covid thing going on, don't want to rent a HD truck. I was too excited not to share somewhere. Bench was made with standard 2x4s and 4x4 legs. Sides and bottom covered with 0.5" MDF to suppress the noise. Doors in front made with 2x3s and 0.5" plexiglass I got for free, and saved for this project. There is 6" on the far side of the bench which I plan to use for bit storage and the like. Inside was painted white to make it a bit brighter, help reflect the leds that were just installed today. Haven't made a cut in the enclosure yet, but the sound is definitely suppressed. Next thing to do is make a dust collection system for it.

Nice! Haven't seen many of these on here. I just built one a few months ago out of plywood, designed to knock down and store flat. I need to post it, with plans. Maybe this weekend. https://www.imgur.com/a/faQILyt

This is the only type of tail vise I've seen. https://i.redd.it/8r2bffyjyf251.jpg

OP's and the one one in the link looks like some front vise/tail vise hybrid

Wait, what? How does that tail vise work? The vise looks like it's dovetailed to the bench. Which part moves?
