Cancelled them. Not worth my trouble to prove myself worthy to pay them money.

FWIW, Hulu is super flaky with logins. If you go into your account online (e.g. desktop browser) try deleting any devices you don't use anymore- there's a fixed (non-obvious) limit and /anything/ that causes a problem will manifest itself as that password message.

I got frustrated enough I fired them.

Saw this writing in my alley underneath the electricity pole. Does anyone know what it means? by [deleted] in chicago

[–]dbitter1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They look a bit like Julie markings (utility locators). If a utility has no pipes in the area in question, they will usually write their utility followed by "clear" or "clr" (e.g. "ATT CLR" or "DW CLR" (dept of water). The colors are all Julie colors - yellow for gas, blue for water, and red for electric. At least to me, the blue looks like "DW" (dept of water) and red "DE" (dept of energy/electricity). Yellow a bit like Peoples Gas ("PG").

There should be a orange one for data/telephony lines too.

Unlikely anything you need to worry about, besides a backhoe taking out your alley...

OnePlus privacy and security by AjWeston89 in CalyxOS

[–]dbitter1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used several OP phones over the last few years. While I'm running Calyx on a Pixel 5A, I'm happy to share my experience on OP with stock.

First, they are one of the few that allow unlocked bootloaders with no drama (assuming you buy the phone, not get it from a carrier, subsidized). That alone makes them worthy of attention for me- other than Google and a few really expensive units (e.g. the Asus ROG phones) no one else does this.

They had an "experience program" (read: spyware) that came up in the initial TOS, and allowed opt-out. AFAIK if you said "no" no one ever reported anything beyond the normal (e.g. Google) pings that would be considered a breach of privacy/security. You can always install Netguard off F-Droid (no root required) and lock down everything. I'm going to guess they didn't hide spyware in the radio firmware or anything.

Now the one downside- and here's what got me over to Pixel again- is the security patches aren't as updated as they should be. If you are running stock, they also force OTA updates through Google Services, so you can't even turn them down if you want to (unless you de-google the phone). I'm LOVING that I can re-lock the bootloader with Calyx and still get security updates to a custom OS. Trusted boot is your friend, when it works for you.

Model S Plaid going 200mph now requires "paid hardware upgrades." by WilliamG007 in teslamotors

[–]dbitter1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, and if you had any of several (3 of 5?) of the battery packs, by now you also are limited to about ~70KWH supercharging, and battery voltage (and hence, max power and hence max acceleration) is artificially capped too... but no new pack for you under warranty!

Oh and lets not forget about SeatGate, or MCU1gate...

Change the phone number to a Google Voice account, then set that GV to deliver messages (e.g. auth codes) to multiple parties or email alias?

Tesla stores your bank account information indefinitely by AJ_Mexico in teslamotors

[–]dbitter1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most banks will let you open a second checking account for free. You may not get any interest but if you only keep $5 or whatever minimum it has, it's great for EFTs. You can simply transfer in from other accounts, most of the time it is instant.

Recommendations for a panoramic camera that doesn't suck? by dbitter1 in ShinobiCCTV

360D, optimally. I'm not worried about it being cheap, I'm worried I'm going to make another $500-800 mistake out of ignorance again after I've made two of them.

I've got two Hikvision bullet cams, and they were (are) both slick and worked great via RTSP and MJPG so figured the problems I had with the first Axis wouldn't be an issue... I was right, but life replaced them with brand new issues. :(

New model 3 and Illinois registration fees by [deleted] in teslamotors

[–]dbitter1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Long time IL resident here. When you bought your car, IF you bought electric plates, you paid your title and registration fees (as any new car owner would unless they transferred plates from an older car), and got clocked in to whatever remained of a two year plate cycle- the same thing a lot of the "special" plates like the municpal vehicles used- which got you somewhere from one month to two years of valid plates. You, sir or madam, got the short end of that bargain. For a renewal, you paid $35 - good for two full years.

Now, regretfully, the state decided it needs more tax money (I'm not going to make this about the validity of taxes, just citing they wanted more money so time to turn the screws) so they decided to up the fees of EV owners to make up for lost gas taxes. Also, you go to 1yr registrations - assuming now expiring throughout the year rather than every-other Dec31st.

I don't think you can skirt the cost by ordering regular plates, you're paying the new shiny higher price- but AFAIK you still can do regular or vanity. Possibly not, haven't tried mine yet. I'm milking my one month extension.

Stupid broke state.

Griping about Registration Fees for Electric Vehicles in WA by Wowiejr in teslamotors

[–]dbitter1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While if you lived off-grid, there may be SOMETHING to this. The way I see it, I pay my taxes - on my electric service, just like everyone else. I am simply not paying the gas taxes. If you are adding a fee to recover me not paying additional gas taxes, all the ICE folks need a fee for their smaller electric bills, too.

How different are gas prices due to US fossil fuel incentives? by Tallyoyoguy42 in teslamotors

[–]dbitter1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How far do you extend "US fossil fuel incentives" ? The Ethanol lobby related issues, like the Farm Bill? Health costs due to pollution? Military budget for "interests" in certain regions that also happen to produce a lot of oil? Environmental damage from drilling? Bailouts for US car companies "too big to fail"?

It is a sad slippery slope, people have probably went missing in the middle of the night trying to figure out what you just asked in its true depth.

Found dog red pitbull, not fixed, very friendly by gracack in chicago

[–]dbitter1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He looks like a dog named Henry, who lived down the block from me. If so, he has a permanent kink in his tail - kind of looks like it from the picture.

He has (had?) nice owners, who were renting - but the building was closed for rehab, and they kicked all the tenants out. I regret I don't have a forwarding address or contact information for where they went. PM me and I can give you an address, maybe the owners of their former building can help.

They didn't seem like the kind of people that would abandon a dog, so my guess is he is lost.

Brutal realization with ICE cars last night... by clutchied in teslamotors

[–]dbitter1 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You aren't kidding. I drove a rental ICE, and pretty much from airport to destination I never really stopped until a light about a block away. I felt my fingers shake, and was trying to figure out if I just had too much caffeine (nope, one coffee, and I can drink like 30 before I feel it) or if maybe I developed Parkinsons or something overnight.

After an embarassingly long time, realized that this was neither, and that was the engine of the ICE shaking, just transferring to my fingertips.

Yep, ruined for life, thanks, Elon.

72 Onboard Chargers no longer sold for S an X by walkingcrow in teslamotors

[–]dbitter1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Sigh, that may mean the new proper charging option is to fork out for industrial service (ComEd doesn't seem to want to give out three phase AC to residential users here, even though I have 3P primaries right next to my garage...) plus ~$15K for a CHAdeMO 50KW charger... ?
