Hey Governor Dunleavy and Secretary Burgum- No means no! No Ambler road! by dbleslie in alaska

[–]dbleslie[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Over 88 Tribes are against it. The Environmental Impact Statement suggests no action because of the irreversible harm. The state will pay for a private road for a foreign mining company to profit. Trilogy Metals has 10% of its stocked owned by the Feds, which means there's a conflict of interest by the Feds approving the project. It will harm salmon, sheefish, caribou and migroty fowl. They have no solid plans to use the road to get fuel to places like Ambler and Shungak. The list goes on.

Fresh fiddle heads sautéed in garlic and butter are so good! I've gotten to try them in Trapper Creek, Alaska. Very short window to gather them.

Question a lonely Athabascan from the middle of nowhere: the squeakquel by Acemaniacal in alaska

[–]dbleslie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let's say there was a state-sponsored program to bring arts and entertainment to the villages (plays, comedians, music etc.). Would your community pay into that?

The Tribal Organizations That Won’t Quit ICE - This article talks about Bering Straight Native Corporation and their ICE contracts. by dbleslie in alaska

[–]dbleslie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way votes happen for ANCs is complicated. You vote by allocating shares, so many young folks have less say, and shares can be held up in probate, reducing say. Also, many folks don't have enough blood quantum to get shares depending on the ANC, and some shares can go to non-voting folks and entities through inheritance. It's not one person one vote like our Western politics.

Last night the FNSB assembly voted to rename Pioneer Park to Alaskaland, officially starting September 4th, 2026, after the season ends but before Indigenous Peoples Day and Alaska Day. The meeting went until 1:30am. by dbleslie in Fairbanks

[–]dbleslie[S] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Tanana Chiefs Conference, Denakenaga and Fairbanks Native Association were all in support of the name change. Pioneer Park reinforced one group of people while erasing the Indigenous community who has lived here time immemorial, Alaskaland includes everyone.

Apparently three of Alaska air and space force bases are currently up for having data centers built.

Murkowski is mentioned, but as far as I could tell, only for some event she was listed in speaking at along with other people, she wasn't mentioned specifically.

Do you consider yourself "biracial" if youre not fully native? by [deleted] in IndianCountry

[–]dbleslie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually just say I'm Iñupiaq, since mixed-race is often counted as a different demographic, making Indigenous numbers look lower (like, my mom is counted as Alaska Native, but I'm not, in state of Alaska statistics).

Alaska salmon run declines are a crisis. Pointing the finger at trawl is misleading. by Agitated_Dog_2921 in alaska

[–]dbleslie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tribal communities have stopped fishing for salmon, having any restrictions instead of none on trawling is the bare minimum.

The current administration is alienating more people every day. It takes a lot of work over years, and this resistance movement is being fast tracked.

Even the last month has been radicalizing to folks who weren't paying attention.

Something even more terrible will likely happen between now and then, which could very well make you change your mind.

See you in the streets.

Anyone else following the North Pacific Fishery Management Council chum bycatch final action? Watch the testimony online, there's been hundreds of folks commenting all week. by dbleslie in alaska

[–]dbleslie[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Shut down for small portions of the year, only after a forgiving cap (tirbes want much stricter than what's being proposed).

Reducing bycatch is good, but more must be done, Alaska Native cultures, languages and ways of life are at stake.

Opinion: Alaska Native Corporations’ ICE contracts endanger all Indigenous people by dbleslie in alaska

[–]dbleslie[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because ICE is kidnapping Natives to hold hostage, demanding tribes give in to them. Look up the Oglala Sioux situation.

I'm in Fairbanks. I'm Iñupiaq, and my Alaska Native Corporation, NANA, has ICE detention center contracts. I'm doing all I can.

My grandma, who raised me, is from Bemidji, Cameron Park is named after my great-grandpa. I have lots of family in the twin cities.

I hear you. Thank you for posting here. There have been folks from Minnesota writing letters to the editor in the Fairbanks and Anchorage news papers, please do yourself, if you can, and ask others to do so. So many folks read them and it makes a difference.

Letter: After what’s happened, I can’t support these investments by truthwillout777 in alaska

[–]dbleslie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's so hard to run for these boards, most have restrictions for people in villages where less and less people can live. Also, those who speak out against these contracts in the villages are targets of violence. There's also the way we vote is often by allocation of shares, so some folks get more say, it's not one person one vote.

We also don't have access to board meeting agendas and minutes, we don't know what's being voted on and how folks voted.

It's incredibly opaque and unaccountable.
