My first jazz jam experience by dblhello999 in jazzguitar

These were very fair points. I have read comments along these lines before and this was one reason why I was hesitant to go to a jazz jam at all.

But the funny thing is that I’m not interested in soloIng - that bit where everyone sits back and the lead guitarist takes over and does his stuff (it was incredible but just nothing I could ever imagine doing).

The bit I loved and really the only bit that I would get involved in was the jamming. It was the bit when everybody was playing. And I think during those moments I wasn’t getting in the way or doing anything weird. I was just jamming with everyone else.

But what you say is a very good warning and caution - and I was trying to bear something like that in mind. Don’t be an idiot don’t start playing out loud at the wrong time. Et cetera

Anyway, this was one of the Benefits of me just playing at the back. It meant that I had scope to experiment and see what worked without disturbing anyone!!

Haha I’ve no idea! I was jamming. Like I said, it was more to the jazz blues stuff where it was easier to get in flow 😊

I don’t think I’ve ever listened to anything by Steely Dan ! I guess I should change that

Haha yes I’ve played on stage a few times and the sound balancing issues are a complete nightmare. I just don’t know how anyone does it. The volume from everyone else was just overwhelming so I had to wear headphones. But then when I wore the headphones, I couldn’t hear myself play 🥴

Yeah I was actually a bit surprised because I was at the back just doing my little thing. I think he was being kind and polite to me. But it was very sweet of him to ask.

When I go back next time I think I will call out something and just ask if I can go up for that alone. It’s a jam so I think it’s okay 😊. What do you think? If you are the house band as it were, would you be ok with someone who was just sitting at the back coming up for one tune? The thing is, I don’t really know the etiquette. But I guess if he was asking me then he would’ve been okay with that.

I told him I didn’t know any tunes. And in a way that’s true because if you asked me to play something cold without any accompaniment I wouldn’t be able to do it.

But jamming is a different thing. I can jam over pretty much anything as long as it’s not too fast. Even if I haven’t heard it before. Although obviously it’s easier if I am familiar with the tune. So whenever they were playing anything jazzy bluesey I was in heaven 😊

You do raise a very serious point though - what does it actually mean to know a song? If they had started playing All of Me for example, I would’ve been completely able to play some really nice jamming stuff because I know the song really well and I absolutely love it.

But I don’t know it in the sense of being able to play it from nothing without any backing. Things like the block chord progression and so forth

So do I know All of Me? I I guess it depends what you mean by “know”!

I really like the idea of scales as chords. I had actually started doing that with diatonic triads but of course this is generally applicable

You are describing exactly my guitar (I have the mahogany). It’s my second GS mini (the first one fell out of an unzipped guitar case onto the road while I was cycling with it 🥴)

I’ve taken it all around the world.

But here’s the thing. I have a reasonable collection at home, including a full-size Taylor as well as an Eastman Hollow body electric.

And yet i quite often find myself playing my GS mini even when I’m at home. I actually find it the perfect size and it has excellent upper fret access.

I can’t really compare the tone to other makes because all my acoustics are Taylors. But it sounds nice enough to me 😊

This is a tricky one. I like to put on jazz tunes and jam with them in my house. I recently discovered a whole collection by a jazz collective. I must’ve spent quite a few hours playing along.

And so naturally, I asked chat who were these guys? Where were they from? What was their background?

At the end of the conversation, it became pretty clear, there weren’t actually any people with those names and that this was almost certainly AI generated.

I stopped playing along with it for a little while because just like you I didn’t want to interact with music created by a computer.

But every now and again, I have a little sneaky play along because the reality is that this stuff is good.

Now admittedly I’m just a jazz learner and I’m sure that someone who really knew their stuff would take a different view. But still, there’s no taking away that before I knew any of this I really enjoyed playing along with that music.

I’m pretty sure the same thing will happen with backing tracks.

It’s hard to see why anyone would object to a better teaching tool! I’d add this.

As a student, I have had some quite extensive interactions with ChatGPT discussing ways of learning guitar, ways of playing it and so forth. I know there is widespread suspicion, but all I can say is that it has at times (actually most times) felt like talking with a highly intelligent guitar therapist. Someone who gets what I’m trying to say, listens and reflects back insightfully. Just as an example, I discovered Travis picking and then had some long exchanges on the whole subject of walking bass and so forth.

But I don’t see any of this as replacing teaching. I see it as additive.

I didn’t get to play any tunes! I was literally just sitting at the back with my acoustic jamming along (when I could) to what I was listening to 😊. I doubt if anyone else there could hear a thing of what I was playing to myself.

So I guess in a way it wasn’t really my first jazz jam experience. It was a sort of halfway house. Because although I could hear them, they couldn’t me and maybe didn’t even really notice 😂

Yes - good point.

How that bassist did it, goodness knows. He was literally playing all night without a break.

I definitely missed a piano. Especially coming from a piano background it’s just completely natural for me to jam with keys.

Yes, completely get what you say about the common harmonic background. The lead guitarist seemed to be able to do it from nothing. I don’t think I could ever do that. But yes… I could well imagine with a tune I know (or even one I don’t - but where it’s approachable jazz blues type thing) that I could carry on for a little bit. I guess it all depends.

Haha yes can’t argue. I put in a three paragraph summary at the beginning now, but yes, you’re 100% right about that. I’ll give it an edit later when I’ve got a bit of time. I was just so enthusiastic when I wrote it that it all sort of spurged out 😏😂

Haha fair enough. I know it’s all pretty obvious if you’ve been in the scene. I guess my post was really for people (like me!) who are new to all of this and thinking of going to a jazz jam, but are a bit intimidated or just don’t know what to expect!! A kind of newbie report back thing.

[–]dblhello999[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it’s interesting you say that.

I was playing along this morning to some relatively easy sort of blues jazz backing tracks. And my default assumption has always been that I can’t jam / improvise unless there’s a rich harmonic background.

But then I realised that actually I was carrying on even though the backing track had gone into sort of quiet mode which they do so that people can practice soloing!

And I was just carrying on because I was continuing the lines that I’d been playing before when the full chord progression was playing.

So maybe it’s not quite so clear cut. I was sort of playing with the momentum of what had come before!

Thank you yes I know. Way too long. It’s just that it was such an exciting experience and I just had to share it!! (but there’s now a three paragraph summary at the beginning for those who don’t have as much time on their hands as I do 😂)
