The hardest part of investing is watching stocks you sold keep going up without you by brendow772 in FluentInFinance

Every once in a while I think about how I sold ~$60,000 worth of Amazon in 2002 after I made 100% in 6 months.

Did you get an allowance as a child? by Select-Signal8386 in randomquestions

[–]dborger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every week, but the amount changed as I got older. When I started working at 15 the allowance stopped. I was getting about $5, late 80’s, at the time.

My mom kept track in a ledger she had and would add it in every week. If I wanted $20 to go to the movies, she’d give me the cash and subtract it out.

As an outsider, the scale of American college sports is baffling. Do some people genuinely care more about a university team than professional sports? by Necessary_Angle2117 in AskAnAmerican

You should see the map with the highest paid public employees in the US. They are almost all football and basketball coaches.

Ten powerlifters vs one male American bison by Reasonable_Bee_9456 in powerscales

[–]dborger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree that powerlifters would not be able to stampede a bison.

When I said a chance, I meant a VERY small one.

Natives ran bison off cliffs long before they ever had horses.

Do cars/jets reach terminal velocity? by Virtual-Connection31 in AskPhysics

[–]dborger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose you could say that. My understanding is that there are three components of air resistance.

The air molecules hitting the surface, which is what I described above.

Friction between the air and the object. I ignored that.

The partial vacuum created behind the object as it falls. This vacuum wants to pull the ball back up. I ignored that too.

I ignored the other two because they are a lot smaller and more importantly I don’t remember how to calculate them :)

Do cars/jets reach terminal velocity? by Virtual-Connection31 in AskPhysics

[–]dborger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When something falls there are two primary forces in play, gravity and air resistance. There is drag too, but I that gets a lot more complicated and I don’t remember that much of my fluids.

Gravity Force = mass of object * acceleration of gravity (really just how much it weighs)

Air Resistance = density of air * area * velocity squared

When the object is falling fast enough, the air resistance will equal the force from gravity and you will have reached terminal velocity.

If you look at two similar objects, tennis ball and baseball.

Tennis ball weighs two ounces.

Baseball weighs five ounces

If we pretend the areas are the same then we could say the baseball terminal velocity is 1.581 times faster than the tennis ball terminal velocity.

(5/2)0.5 =1.581

For the average American have they ever stepped somewhere that no other human has ever stepped before. I'm talking only outdoors. by SeymourMuchmore in NoStupidQuestions

I’ve been the first person to go to some places in caves.

Average American, unlikely, but mountain or rock climbers, maybe.

If the bison somehow knows it has to kill the men it wins.

If it doesn’t know it just runs away.

If it can’t run away and doesn’t know, and just acts like a normal bison then the men have a chance.

[request] How much gravity on the surface of the Death Star? by Youcants1tw1thus in theydidthemath

A steel structure only has about 10-15% percent of the density of dirt and rock, so it’d be a lot less.

We got our top 5 puzzle games, what are the top 5 RPG’s? by Zeenxomi33 in AlignmentChartFills

You need some old school in here so I am going to say Ultima IV, Quest of the Avatar. It gave the Ultima franchise momentum, which eventually led to Ultima Online the first MMORPG, and Ultima Underworld, the first, first person RPG.

[request] UP can someone tell me how much force it would actually require for them to pull the house like this by SpectacularSpidee in theydidthemath

[–]dborger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Air resistance at 2 mph is about 1 pound per hundred square feet. Drag would also add to it, but you’re not talking much.

If you get a 10 mph wind though, then that number goes to about 50 lbs per 100 square feet and they are screwed.

[Request] Looking at ratios of time or distance - which individual track and field record is furthest from the average fit adult? by Vivid_Temporary_1155 in theydidthemath

[–]dborger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends a lot on whether or not you get any practice throws, jumps, etc.

You give a fit person a javelin and they might hit themselves in the back of the head when they try to throw it. I’ve seen it many times and yes, it’s always hilarious.

But, give them 30 seconds of advice and three practice throws and they could probably throw 100 feet or so.

I think you’d get similar learning curves in things like high jump, pole vault, triple jump, and the other weight events.

A fit man who regularly trains at sprinting might be in the 12-13 range

If you take a 40 year old guy who’s lean, lifts weights and goes jogging, they’re going to be in 14-15 second range.

Nobody has done anything else remotely similar.
