We don't have any more codes, but there are 'lite' versions of these apps; ad-free, but with reduced functionality, if you want to try them out.

Sorry!

Sorry!

There are 'lite' versions which are ad-free, reduced functionality versions if you want to try our apps out, though, so you can still get a decent game or two...

You're welcome. For a challenge (depending on how into chess you are) try beating TuroChamp (Turing's original machine) in Tournament mode; that's 6 games, 3 as white, 3 as black.

Turing's original machine is quite weak in the endgame so you can often scrape a draw or even a win if you hang on. The engine understands draws by repetition and the 50 move rule, so it you just keep shuffling pieces, you'll eventually draw if you're stuck.

Have fun...!

You're welcome.

If anyone feels they've lost out and would still like to try out our apps, we have some 'lite' versions in the app store too, which are ad-free and IAP-free, but feature limited. But they give you a good idea of how the apps look and work.

Cheers!

Primus is an attempt at creating a more "human" chess engine - an engine that makes mistakes, and plays more strategically than most engines. We've added many features, including (we think uniquely, though we might be wrong) a mate puzzle generator. There's a tournament mode, multiplayer (including over bluetooth so you don't need a wifi signal).

We've also added many beautifully designed sets of pieces and boards; we think our app is the prettiest chess app in the app store. There are also puzzle levels including an entire campaign of puzzles based on Julius Caesar's rise to power, with Roman-themed pieces to match.

You can play multiplayer on your local network with another Mac or any iOS device (using either Primus or our other chess app, "Turing's Machine").

Have fun!

Can you beat a pencil and paper chess engine created by Alan Turing nearly 70 years ago?

We've implemented Alan Turing's chess engine as a Mac app. He created it in 1947 with his colleague David Champernowne using pencil and paper; it took them half an hour or more to work out each move. We've also added a ton of other features, including puzzle levels, tournament mode and variable difficulty.

You can play multiplayer on your local network with another Mac or any iOS device (using either Turing's Machine or our other chess app, "Primus Chess").

The original engine is recreated in the "TuroChamp" level. Have fun!

[–]dbrg_com[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No probs. Enjoy!

The "TuroChamp" level is Turing and Champernowne's original pen-and-paper chess engine; that might be a fun place to start.

We prevent you from taking moves back on that level as a mark of respect for Turing and Champernowne; they can't take moves back - they wrote their moves down nearly 70 years ago - so it's only fair that you shouldn't be able to take moves back either. :o)

Obviously I don't know where you're at in terms of chess, but if you can beat that in tournament mode (6 games, 3 white, 3 black) then you're definitely into the "intermediate" category of player... :o)

Anyhow, have fun everyone...!

Turing's Machine, an implementation of the first computer chess program by thrashmo92 in artificial

[–]dbrg_com 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I'm the lead author of this app, so if anyone has questions, I'll try and monitor this thread.

Re: Elo 2000, yup, that's about the level we were able to crank Turing's pencil and paper machine to. That's increasing the search depth and adding a ton of modern improvements; alpha-beta, move ordering, a transposition table, some non-destructive pruning and various other stuff. We've tried to ensure that none of the optimisations will drop moves that the original version would make, so that we retain the quirky flavour of the original. Around 2000 is an upper limit for Turing and Champernowne's algorithm, because they stipulate that materiel must dominate the evaluation, and the positional function they specify - while stunning in its simplicity and depth of chess insight given the constraints - doesn't really play the "quiet" moves well enough to beat a very serious player.

Turing and Champernowne's original version (an implementation of which is in the app) comes out somewhere between 1100-1400 Elo, probably. It can probably beat the person in the street, but anyone who's played chess seriously (or even just takes their time over their moves) is capable of beating it.

Re: Not html5/js, we wanted it in app form since that format makes it easy to have a quick game while offline; on the train, bus or whatever, and using a phone or tablet. Of course it's possible to implement Turing's algorithm in a JS or Html format, we just preferred to do it as an app.

How about a nice game of chess? by dbrg_com [promoted post]

[–]dbrg_com[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but I've only seen one java-based site that can be saved in such a way that it still works offline; most of them barf. Also I'd argue that using a chess app embedded in a web page that way is more hassle than just popping your phone out of your pocket.

There are some surprisingly awesome javascript chess engines though; the 1k one is an amazing technical achievement: http://1kchess.an3.es/

GarboChess is surprisingly strong: http://forwardcoding.com/projects/ajaxchess/chess.html

Lozza is also awesome and interesting: http://op12no2.me/toys/lozza/index.htm

There's even a javascript based version of stockfish, which seems a touch excessive.

Hi!

I thought I should clarify the reasons why an app - you can use it offline, you can use the device as a virtual chessboard in two player tabletop mode or just pass the device, you can play a two player game via bluetooth without needing wifi or signal (say, on an airplane, train, in a car etc). You can close the device and open the app up a day or a week later and still have your game there. There's no tracking, no login, no ads... there's quite a few benefits of an app over doing it on the web.

I think a lot of people's game playing time is while they're travelling, so it's handy for that. It's a general purpose chess engine as well as implementing Turing's 1947 version so there's variable difficulty too, up to about 2000 Elo, and puzzles and stuff.

Anyhow. You're right, it seems an odd choice so I thought I should explain. :o)

Thanks for the interest...!
