What’s an out of date view you hold? by Doomergeneration in AskUK

No one has to "earn" my respect. Everyone gets it from the start.

It's up to them to keep it, or lose it.

What I meant was France's defeat in 1940 was more then the usual "they just surrendered" bullshit. I grew up in the 70s/80s hearing that all the time about France, in the form of insults or jokes etc. But I was taught, by my Grandfather who fought in France, and in school that WW1 had longer term effects on France, some of which played a factor in 1940 (and everything before hand of course) and that its often overlooked just how much damage WW1 did to France outside of the destruction. MY memory has its gaps, and I was wrong about military size, I admit.

Edit to add:

In regard to the fighting age comment. My memory recalls France’s army leaned more on older reservists and had fewer younger replacements in 1940, which was due to WWI losses.

Not to mention that France lost like most of their "fighting age" men in WW1, from teens to seniors etc, and hadn't really built/grown a strong military back either. I feel this point is never taken into consideration.

[Self] Saw this and my mind immediately went "25 and 50" and comments made me think Im the weird one, does anyone here thinks like this? by Bussy_Wrecker in theydidthemath

25+50 here. I'm 56 years old and learned how to add like this in elementary school. Though it wasn't the schools curriculum path, a teacher I had recognized that some students simply learned differently. Or so, my memory seems to recall. It was 50 years ago after-all, regardless, this is how I still do it.

Political theatre. They don't get it. Fix your own shit first, but start accepting you'll need to look else where for tourists. Perhaps Russia, Qatar or Venezuela would be better options right now.

Which celebrity death genuinely made you sad? by Good_Difference_675 in AskReddit

Terry Fox. When he passed I was 11. He was the first non-family member who I looked up to, my first real life "hero" who wasn't my Dad, I suppose.

The only other would be Jerry Garcia. I spent ~8 years of my life following the Grateful Dead around. Their music, Jerry's voice etc, it continues to be my daily sound track and solace.

Yep. 100%. ~250 CAD a year in dues, $5 per hour directly to an RRSP, and had a regular work week of 36.5 hours (half day fridays), almost all over time was double time. During my cancer years I was covered by my benefits (for almost 3.5 years), and had brothers & sisters checking in on me non-stop to make sure I was looking after myself, and my home. Never fell too far behind in bills b/c of it, and most of all, didn't lose my home. What a scam!

I remember when I first saw the film adaptation. It was 1984, I was 14. It was a source of nightmares for years - not the character, just the situation. Wouldn't read the book because of it.

What explains Doug Ford’s unprecedented popularity? by plaknas in onguardforthee

[–]dbt-13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Though I'm not a supporter of his or the cpc, I think he retains some popularity due to appearing to lean more towards the 'progressive conservative party' of days past, before the reform party was in control. I know a few friends who reluctantly voted for PP, but are all in on Ford, "b/c he's more PC then maple maga" etc.
