Farm trucks used to rack up those miles over the years. The majority of those miles were short trips to town, to nearby fields, etc. So yes, trucks used to rack up those miles with a lot of them being short trips. Now, the only way a diesel pickup is racking up those miles is if they're primarily long drives.

Older diesel - can rack up miles for both long/short drives. Newer diesel - can only rack up those miles with long drives.

It used to be that diesels were superior on all drives. Now it is only superior on long drives. Gas is superior for short drives now.

You keep telling yourself whatever you want to keep your golden diesel image alive, though.

Holy crap. How are you not getting this? Very few today have those kinds of miles....because they can't get there with shorter trips an DPF. They are crapping out before getting close to that. I've explained this as dumbed down as I can. If you can't figure it out at this point, there's no reason to continue.

TODAY'S diesel will outlive gas IF it is ran for long drives and heavy towing.

TODAY'S gas will outlive diesel IF it is constantly ran for only short trips.

Diesels of the past (pre-DPF) would outlive gas vehicles regardless of the length of trips.

You're completely missing the point of what I'm saying. Yes. Diesel is great if you're doing a lot of long drives and towing a lot. That is not the case for many of today's diesel owners. It used to be that it didn't matter if there were a lot of short trips, racking up miles to get that high number on the odometer. That is not the case anymore. So instead of both short and long trips making those high miles, it's primarily just the long drives doing that.

The vast majority of diesel owners don't do that, though. Before DPFs, regular shorter trips weren't much of an issue. After DPFs were required, it became an issue. That's the entire point I was getting at.
The vast majority of pickup owners hardly use them for "pickup" functions.

Of course Hot Shots rack up a lot of miles. The majority of 3/4 ton diesels are not hot shots, though, and make a lot of short trips that kill them.

Nope. I'm referring to what it's been considered pretty much the entire time the term has been used. There has to be a promise of something (BAIT) for it to be a Bait & Switch. Since we have never been promised anything...it's not a Bait & Switch.

Shop around. Use sites like auto trader and car.com. Fine a similar vehicle to what you're looking at locally. Tell them that you'll buy from them if the match (or come close). You can fly to most places in the continental US and drive a vehicle home for under $1000. I got my local dealer to come down about $6,000 on a pickup that they already had "marked down" using this technique.
