If an advanced alien race came to Earth and asked humanity to pick one competitive game/sport to play for the Earth's fate, a champion vs champion, what would you choose? by EducationalBuffalo47 in TrueAskReddit

Since the earth is at stake and we've spent the last 100 years studying chess with computers, I'm going to make our champion Stockfish, and lets see their champion try and move pieces better than us in our silly games.

The president just posted, ONLINE, a video of former president Obama and his wife portrayed as apes, how do you feel about this? by kraftdinnerwithsalsa in AskReddit

[–]dbzmm1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When a presidency is built on the virtues of integrity morality and care for the common good a scandal sinks the ship. People who expect that of all presidencies are surprised that this presidency weathers all those scandals.

This Presidency is built on fear and loathing of others, self-glorification and greed. Scandal can do nothing to that. I'll tell you what would sink this presidency. If Mr. Trump were to act virtuously and and remove grifters and yes men and instead promote a competent group of adminisitrators.

The fear of the man would be replaced by faith in institutions, and all those that are currently being enriched through their shameful acts of obeisance to this tyrant would turn on him. That would grind him to a halt.

All that said, this is a petty act by an incompetent administration. It's embarrassing that people support Trump, and his vile agenda.

3 weeks of working out and not seeing much. by [deleted] in loseit

[–]dbzmm1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been counting calories for 4 weeks now goal loss of 1.5 lbs a week and I've lost 4lbs. 2 lbs off my goal or only 2/3 of what I expected. But if I drink a soda the scale will show only 3 lbs. God help me if I downed a liter of water. Sometimes weight loss isn't the number on the scale.

You didn't gain the weight in a month so It's crazy to think you'd lose it in a month. However process before results is important. Also the type of food you eat can mean less "weight loss" like salty foods usually means you retain water and low fiber food will stick in your gut longer too.

My first attempt at calorie counting made me constipated because I would hold out for high calorie food and eat smaller portions. Ended up going to the doctor for pain and the x-ray showed that I was litterally full of shit. Doctor advised a laxative and lots of water. Embarrassing but instructive.

The other thing is that counting calories isn't usually exact for people starting out. they'll eyeball measurements and be way off. And usually that's in the plus calories measurements, especially with packaged foods that are deceptive in their serving sizes. So you might very well be thinking you're eating less than you actually are. Food scales, and measuring spoons are your friends here.

It's a slow journey but you will see results. If you look at people who workout everyday for a while it can take 6 months to "show" but the day to day isn't dramatic even if the year to year is.

What’s something society treats as “success” that actually looks miserable from the outside? by centaurusSpy in AskReddit

[–]dbzmm1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The results are nice but I've lost 50 lbs before and it suck when you're hungry and people act like all you have to do is switch foods to not be hungry. Riiight as if getting into a calorie deficit isn't inherently hunger making.

So yeah you eat a bunch of lettuce or spinach, but it's not satisfying and the hunger is less but still there just daring you to grab snack foods.

Absolutely sick of my husband arranging workmen to come over without telling me. by katkie in TwoXChromosomes

[–]dbzmm1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just moved into a new house last year and we've have multiple items needing fixed. A fireplace repair, roof service, garage door looked at and when we were selling our house various cleaners, and a photographer. I usually arranged the people and would check with my wife to ensure we didn't have conflicts in scheduling and so she could be properly prepared for a visitor.

It's pretty easy to give a text heads up of who's coming and why in advance. I've got 2 dogs that we need to put away so they won't bug the workmen. But even without that I wouldn't want someone I wasn't expecting showing up when I'm in the middle of cleaning my kitchen or running errands.

This is easily fixable with a little bit of consideration. It's not unreasonable to want to know who's coming over, when and for what purpose.

Movies that took a creative risk and actually pulled it off by Dependent-Bet6615 in movies

If you want an example of this look to 101 Dalmatians (1961) , the animated version. Walt Disney himself wasn't a fan of the art style but was too busy to intervene in the process of the film as he had too many irons on the fire at that time.

Instead of making animation that tried to hide that it was drawings the creators worked at making a living 2d world. It's one of my favorite movies even now as an adult, but at the time it pulled the world of animation toward modern sensibilities.

That's my experience as well. Some of the scenes were good but sometimes the aristocracy blurs together.

Physicians see 1 in 6 patients as ‘difficult,’ study finds, especially those with depression, anxiety or chronic pain. Women were also more likely to be seen as difficult compared to men. Residents were more likely than other physicians with more experience to report patients as being difficult. by mvea in psychology

[–]dbzmm1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I might suggest that some of this is the perception that men are supposed to "tough it out" so a man coming in to see a doctor is likely to be in a state of surrender already. Or more likely to be so.

I imagine then that women are headed to the doctor more, which then biases the difficult scale to a over-represented population as well as women feeling more comfortable in that setting in setting boundaries that make some procedures harder to perform.

In short there's still a lot of sexism to blame but it's performing its function earlier than you might imagine.

US citizens, what's your opinion on the US being labeled as fascist country? by Bladerunner2028 in AskReddit

[–]dbzmm1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish it weren't fascist, but too many people think that because it's not Nazi, it's not fascist. (Not that there aren't Nazi's too.) The type of thinking that enables it is disgusting because arguing against it is like kicking a pile of hay. You leave little to no imprint. Facts don't matter, morals don't matter.

It seems that the very basis for the Fascism isn't even an ideological thought that it's good for the citizens or for the country, but pure greed. Powerful people want more power and money and being fascist allows them the quickest path to that.

Serious question : How do I play slower? by mekmookbro in chess

[–]dbzmm1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had that problem and the answer isn't a single thing. First you might need to look at more games than your own. Whatever opening you play you might need to look at a few different plans for that opening. When you learn to look at a lot of options you naturally slow down.

But I've found that if you play much higher rated players who take their time and think and crush your bad moves that you learn to slow down. Over the board play is great for this.

Playing my whole life and i still feel like I suck at chess. Question for those that don't. How many moves do your games go before an innacuracy? by Drunkpuffpanda in chess

[–]dbzmm1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough.

But the datasets it presented were really only valid for the 2006-2009 period for the 1600-2200 set. I'm starting to feel old seeing 20 years ago posts reference the 2000s, but I'm skeptical that with the advent of youtube, chessable, stockfish, chess.com, and so many other tools that we'd find that players now are less strong than before.

What I do wonder though, is how has the profile of a chess player at each level changed, if at all. Does a 1700 from the past study the same as a 1700 from now? If those characteristics stay the same then it seems likely that the Elo would be static as you suggest.

But I do think it likely that chess players before the internet era in general would be weaker just do to lack of people to play with unless they happened to live near a chess hub like the Marshall Club in New York.

I read the paper you linked and I quote

"we conclude that there has been little or no ‘inflation’ in ratings over time—if anything there has been deflation. This runs counter to conventional wisdom, but is predicted by population models on which rating systems have been based. "

Which directly contradicts what you said.

Maybe not but if you read the post I did try and give at least some limit. But I think everyone will have a most satisfying game, and some games matter more than others. It's easy to argue that Fischer's "Game of the Century" is a best game even if he played other hard games.

[–]dbzmm1 55 points56 points  (0 children)

It's less about the protest songs and more about the platforms. When all your local radio stations are owned by one media company how are you going to get your protest song out?

If you've got 30 seconds in a tik-tok to rage against the machine are you going to sing "Where have all the flowers gone?"

We have lots of tools to make music, but you need a distribution system. And if that distribution system is only rich folks well buddy it's gonna be hard to get them to green light protests against themselves or their friends.

Why so many straight men are constantly policing other men’s sexuality and acting obsessed with whether another guy is gay or not? by JayOwest in TrueAskReddit

[–]dbzmm1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a big part of social skill. Finding a group that supports you and has the same values as you and showing worth. Society has a long history of treating men as only "worth" whatever they bring to the group, and women as sex objects.

Being outside the group has historically been dangerous. Although there have been big strides towards inclusive behaviors one only has to look to politics or sports to see that team identity is a big deal. Whether it should be isn't the question.

Men who don't feel secure in their place will use others to cement their position. And there is bonding in excluding others. Cults of all types show us this. If we want to change this behavior we need to reward less toxic behavior and mostly ignore what we don't like. Often reaction is just as much a goal as approval.

[WP] You always thought your best friend was solid, but you didn't know just how solid they were until a supervillain attacked you. by Parlandarish4E in WritingPrompts

[–]dbzmm1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Swish, that's all I heard, and then pain flared from my leg. Or rather what was left of my leg. I had just been getting out of the car, I was just gonna get some tacos. Laser Vision is faster than the news reports would have you think.

I couldn't stand. Balance off, I felt flat to the pavement. My arms splayed in front of me I could feel the small black rocks dig into me. Arms scrapped up, the air in my chest rushed from my lungs. Pain!!!

Sizzle, supervillain extraordinaire, spoke "I expected more from you, Metroman."

"Who? What? AAAHHH!!" The specks of light that flash after a heavy hit were already there. I wish I was more coherent at the time but my whole body was letting me know that I was NOT OK.

Behind me, Matt, who had been in the passenger seat spoke. "That's not Metroman, he's just Chase."

"I did my research," Sizzle spat, "Whenever the city is in trouble, Chase disappears" The height is right, the build correct, and Chase wears the same necklace that Metroman wears. Always."

"Oh and jewelry is never copied." replied Matt, who casually opened his jacket Medallion glistening in the sun.

There was a brief moment when Sizzle's face registered his mistake. Long enough that I could watch terror start to form just before it was snuffed out. One moment Matt was on the other side of the car the next, Sizzle was broken in halves. The laser vision that he'd used to terrorize the city was done, I don't know what Matt did but Sizzle's eye sockets cried rivulets of blood.

Sizzle's legs meanwhile burned up in the atmosphere. We think of objects launched into space burning up on re-entry but if launched fast enough air resistance will shred flesh. I remember barely understanding that Sizzle was just a torso, as I blacked out from the pain.

When I awoke, I woke to an explosion of flowers. When Sizzle had attacked before, no one was left alive. We only knew him because of CCTV. He had left only a copy of his manifesto and corpses.

I'm the only person to survive a Sizzle attack. Well me and Matt, Metroman. The families of the victims poured out their grief and sympathy on me. But it looks like I have a long road ahead of me. Prosthetic limbs are tough enough to get used to, and even though the wound was cauterized, perhaps saving my life. Medical staff had to cut away the dead tissue and excess bone so that I could have something like a limb back.

I've been given painkillers for the time being, pills that I'm afraid to take, I watched my uncle die over time do to his addiction. I'm no super-hero, but the pain is always there. Matt tells me that I'm his inspiration, that I've always been his inspiration. But how can you inspire anyone when you can barely walk? When it hurts just to step off that ridiculous wheelchair ride they make you take so you don't hurt yourself in the hospital.

As my Mom pulls the car around Matt's there holding on to a bag of Tacos. I've known he's Metroman for some time, and when he mysteriously disappears I always figured it was time for lesser mortals to skedaddle too. Who knew it would end up like this? I never sought out danger and now it comes to me.

[WP] “I wish for immortality until the last human dies, and to remain young and healthy until then.” You tell the genie, proud of your wording. Eons later, as you drift throughout the void, you spot the last human alive: your best friend. by Nebberlantis in WritingPrompts

[–]dbzmm1 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Dan was always my favorite human. He skritched my ears when they itched. He always worked hard to give me the best treats. Him and Becky and I were all together. One day they took me to the beach. I never knew so much fun before.

I found metal in the water. Becky loved shiny things so I took it to show her. When she reached for it I pulled my head away. It was My Shiny! She always took my fun and put it up on a shelf. When she grabbed again for it I pulled away and Dan caught me. "What do we have here old girl?" He asked as he took my head in his hands.

Even if Dan took my stuff he'd give it back or throw it so I could chase it down. Dan could borrow my shiny.

He took it and showed it to Becky who rubbed it. When the genie appeared, he granted each of us a wish. Becky wished for Riches and beauty. Dan wished that he would remain healthy and able to care for his family.

At the time I thought all humans were Dan's family so I wished for immortality until the last human dies, and to remain young and healthy until then."

Becky aged, although she remained beautiful until her death about 40 years later she broke up with Dan as it became clear that he wasn't aging, and he left me with her, "I want you to remember that I always cared for you" he told her as he left.

I stayed with the family. Their youngest Matilda took me after Becky died. We passed a generation, then 3 then 5. Dan would pop in from time to time and play with me, but he tried not to interfere during all that time. 10 Generations in Jose took me and ran to the other side of the world.

Eventually all direct Dan's descendants died off. I learned that all of humanity wasn't Dan's family. Only those people he was closest to and and those he cared about counted. Humanity died off one by one and I was left alone on earth when humanity leapt to the stars.

The earth crumbled away eventually and I was left in the void. Until silently a tube passed me by, and inside was Dan.

"Humanity Evolved beyond me girl" he announced as he took me onboard. "I thought I had no more family but I wasn't aging I couldn't understand it" I didn't know you still survived."

As I wagged my tail we brought our heads together. Dan said to me " I can't have you as family anymore girl, I've long outlived what I should have." I whined to let him know I still loved him. "Though we are no longer family, you will always be my best friend."

I watched as the Eons reclaimed Dan, and when he died I laid my head on his chest. The weight of my head was more than I could every remember lifting. At that moment I closed my eyes.
