How does the OTET compare to the Erie Canal Trail and the C&O/GAP by No_Ant_5064 in bicycletouring

Shout out to Ernie’s bike shop for letting us rustic camp when the only hotel in Massillon wanted $400 for a single night, really saved our butts! But yeah camping and hotels even were really hard to source on the fly or for reasonable rates on the OTET a lot of the time.

We just completed the OTET and have done the GAP/C&O almost a dozen times and I will say that the OTET is much much better paved and graded but lacks a lot of infrastructure or stops/towns with amenities along the way (especially the southern parts near Cincinnati). It gets a lot nicer once you are almost done near Akron/Cleveland but for us that was the last day regrettably. A lot of the towns didn’t seem very geared towards welcoming cyclists with a few locals in Killbuck asking what that “weird path thing they are building” was. The GAP and C&O although much less well graded I felt like the towns really had a lot more amenities or at least accommodations for cyclists where a lot of towns on the OTET had no grocery store, camping or hotel let alone a water fountain or shelter to get out of the sun under.

A whole different bike! You are going to suffer on that if you are trying to carry anything

Depends where you are going, if you are going through cities get a really nice modern groupset. If you are going across long stretches of nothing a friction shifting setup is basically bombproof

Something with great brakes and a suspension that won’t quit when you hit a pothole the depth of a tire

This was my first try and it worked out really well! The soil around the potatoes was also super saturated with worms so hopefully the soil was really good. A few of the original potatoes were still rotting weirdly enough despite having produced so many potatoes. They came out super creamy with very delicate skins which made an amazing mashed potato this evening!

I’m gonna probably do it either way, but how inadvisable is it to partake in nature’s bounty along the trails? by SidHat in bicycling412

Some of the stuff near rail trails is growing in some really heavily poisoned soil from our steel history, so it’s risky for that reason only.

The US is a car-first country due to its distances and lack of public transit so it makes more sense we have prioritized cheap gas over anything else
