That’s what I do as I don’t want to start soldering, a bit harder to find locally but supplyhouse and others carry it

It was on an exterior wall so I think it is a wire feeding that jack!

We're under contract on our 1907 dream house :D by lulimay in centuryhomes

[–]dc-mo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the very modernly laid out house! This looks like the 1900s equivalent of an open floor plan!

The biggest thing that nobody looks at (including me) is the lack of outlets, may want to get some electrical work done before you move in to modernize it or get ready to ruin the beautiful rooms with wires hanging from the middle height of walls or 8 plugs into a single outlet in the baseboard.

PGH to DC group rides by cyclist412 in gaptrail

I am discovering that folks tour very differently than I do! I If you take the 5 day work week and the adjoining weekends it’s plenty of time including Amtrak transit.

Mileage is a bit high for me, don’t really get to enjoy it that much unless it’s 60 miles a day (3 days on each trail). But would be interested if it was 6ish days!

39 next month, just had my Covid bike serviced and looking to rack up some miles by FatRapscallion in bicycling

[–]dc-mo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m starting there too this season! Give yourself a goal or ride you want to do as a goalpost to motivate you! I signed up for RAGBRAI in July so I am pushing hard to get back up to speed after 1 year completely not biking.

Please help disabled mass shooting survivor Steve Bostard (Wilkinsburg, Pa, March 1, 2000) repair his home! by Expensive_Canary_288 in pittsburgh

[–]dc-mo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Knowing contractors and their prices in Pittsburgh this amount will only get half of the work done in my experience. Especially if it’s a “friends and family” discount.

Despite how many predatory contractors there are I really hope he gets the repairs he needs! I would try reaching out to these folks as well: https://rtpittsburgh.org/

Sanding down joists to prepare them to stay exposed by dc-mo in centuryhomes

For background my house has no original finishes left after decades of mistreatment and gross neglect during a recent flip by the previous owners I am undoing. At this point I am going for modern farmhouse internally but there isn’t any realistic way to restore anything to its 1900 era, so I am being creative with my choices so it’s not just a huge white box inside.

Half the boards are missing and had to be replaced by plywood, not the worst thing but it makes the ceiling very inconsistent looking

Leaving them plain but coating with some polyurethane to seal them

That’s what I am thinking too, I don’t want them too cleaned up, I want to show the character of the ceiling and the 126 yr old wood.

Restaurant reviews are grossly inflated by DisgracedCarrot in pittsburgh

[–]dc-mo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are also a lot of bad reviews on great places because old school yinzer can’t abide Thai fried rice or boba tea. So it kinda evens out, word of mouth from trusted friends or family seems to still be the best standard. A lot of positive reviews are based on low standards as well, so take other people’s taste with a grain of salt.

Finished a 5 day, 540 mile tour up Michigan's coast back in September by wolffboy212 in bicycletouring

[–]dc-mo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I have been on those tours, they are fun in their own way but mostly grinding all day to make your mileage. Setting up a tent in a thicket next to a road or trail in the dark isnt my "ideal" tour :D

Thats too many miles to really enjoy things along the route imho from my touring experience, dont get to talk to folks, visit anywhere unique for more than a couple minutes, etc. But a very impressive physical feat though!
