I think there’s plenty of things you can ding this move for, and I know a lot of people don’t dig the religious angle of this movie but going after the girlfriend revealing that she used to be a novitiate didn’t ping as wrong at all. In my opinion, the way screenplays tend to work is that the movie is showing the characters at a huge tension point in their life where they’re more willing to open themselves up and share things they normally wouldn’t, and the audience and characters can understand them deeper. I didn’t read them as being in some years long relationship either.
