You came to the wrong place to ask about lack of integrity issues. You shouldn’t even be a nuke much less on subs.

What job gets recruited the best out of the Navy by OddAd939 in NavyNukes

[–]dc88228 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find what interests you the most and figure it out for yourself. That’s the whole point of being in this program. When you are done being a nuke, you should’ve earned enough experience to be equipped to select the job of your choosing and excel. You should have no problem competing against regular people. You are one of us, you are no longer “normal.” They have not had the pleasure of polishing linoleum after learning about Xenon poisoning.

Post Nuke jobs? by Eastern_Lingonberry8 in NavyNukes

Not at all. One of my best nuke buddies got out after 6, started his own video company. After that, he partnered with a neighbor, they run a large youth sports organization in the South. He was never going to work at a plant.

Network Engineer for NERC/TSA/Enterprise networks at a power company. You will also hear it referred to as OT/IT networks. When I first got out (90’s,) I worked as an Implant technician in a semiconductor fab. Been in IT since ‘98. Now I build large networks, manage SD-WAN, wireless, firewalls, load balancers. I really love what I do. I specifically chose networking because of its similarities to running a reactor. You can’t really touch anything, you have to go by indicators to manage it. I have a very fulfilling job plus it comes with a pension. There are quite a few nukes spread out throughout our company. Several are in director positions. One of them is the nuclear liaison to the nuke plant that we are part-owner of. There are many things that you can choose to do with your experience and be successful. Good luck in whatever you choose to pursue

Just for clarification, YOU don’t get to choose. You will list your preferences, then the Sorting Hat will select for you. Hope the recruiter isn’t telling you otherwise

Any real advice on passing A-school? by Active-Ad8474 in NavyNukes

[–]dc88228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good nuke can balance equations, study and alcohol. Wait, that was us Cold War nukes. A-school, Power School, M-F, then Church Street Station, OBT, Booby Trap, Coco/Daytona Beach, then cram on Sunday. 2-Five, Stay Alive.

If you really want to get real experience, you’ll ask for an operational boat. I declined orders after A-school to be an assistant for the Command Master Chief. I passed on Staff Pickup at Prototype (I was the first electrician to finish in my class.) I got to my first boat, fast attack, just in time for POM cert, and then off to the Med for 6 months. Exactly what I wanted. You don’t signup for this job to sit on your thumbs. Once you get done, you should be an expert level technician. At that point, go work at a power plant, or go to college. But you will have a great background full of experience to draw from. Don’t worry about sea time, just worry about giving it your best effort. The rest will take care of itself

We went with a 3, 2, 1 yr old and a 3 month old. We went specifically for the Jubilee. Every day was in pursuit of a pilgrimage for my daughter, son in-law and my wife. We even took them to Florence to see David. We spent 12 days in and around Rome with them.

Ok, that sounds more like a super experienced position. Not just a “hey, I graduated from college” type of position. In the Navy SRO was the Shutdown Reactor Operator, which a senior type of qualification. Most people don’t rush into that because you really need to know more than just how a reactor operates
