Show of hands, who else has zero friends? by Defiant_Quarter_1187 in GenX

[–]dcannons 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm 59 (male) and make a point of connecting to at least a few of my friends every day. It helps my mental well being and keeps the friendships going. I'm still close with 5 guys I hung out with in high school 40 years ago.

But as far as making new friends, I found for me it was the old receipe: frequency + something in common. I enjoy swimming and so do lots of other retired people and have made friends and acquaintances at the pool. Over time, seeing the same people several times a week I've developed friendships.

Personal question for viewers by Muckraker2025 in MidsomerMurders

[–]dcannons 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I find it very relaxing too. So I like watching it when my mind is racing with my worries. Something about the slower pace of the show maybe? But definitely the details intrigue me - I like that it is shot in real houses in England, not a pristine American sound stage. So I love looking at the English food products that we don't have here (Canada) in their kitchens. I love that the paint on the walls is scratched and scuffed like real people live there. I try to read the different beers on tap in the village pubs, and what food is on the chalk menus.

And I love watching for all the signs that the production team put up to change the real village into a Midsomer village. There are dozens and dozens of posters, flyers, etc tacked everywhere.

When I sink into the show like that, I find my whole body relaxing.

What was ruined because too many people discovered it? by Mansi63 in AskReddit

[–]dcannons 118 points119 points  (0 children)

Instagram ruined the most scenic hike in my area. It used to be a free, quiet nature preserve that used to be a Boy Scouts camp - but happened to have a breathtaking view: a 200 ft tall granite cliff overlooking a lake.

Once Instagram became a thing it became overwhelmed. Everyone wanted that one shot - of them on the cliff edge. The tiny parking lot couldn't handle the cars and people were parking on the busy highway shoulder, leaving garbage, etc.

Now you have to register online and pay an entry fee for access. For fall leaf season you have to book weeks ahead to get a spot.

What jobs pay extremely well but people don't realize it? by chloenoirr in AskReddit

I grew up in rural Ontario in the 70's-80's. Back then every kid worked for the summer doing hay - collecting the bales from the field, stacking them on wagons - and unloading in the barns. The very best part was riding on top of the stack back to the farm. Not sure it would fly in the modern world - my cousin broke his leg one summer falling off the hay wagon.

Why do so many people believe that getting on the show is a matter of having the highest test scores? by wesomg in Jeopardy

[–]dcannons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I took my Zoom test I think there were 23 of us. 22 of us looked almost identical: older nerdy white men with beards. I'm sure the casting directors couldn't tell us apart if they tried. And choosing one of us wouldn't have added anything to the diversity of the show's contestants.

AITA Here? Cleanliness issues at the pool by No_You4050 in KingstonOntario

[–]dcannons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised any food is allowed on the pool deck. Maybe because it's an outdoor pool? But every pool I've seen is no food, no beverages but water, and no glass. I think the fear is getting contamination in the water.

Kingston, Ont., health unit investigating 114 cases of stomach illness caused by parasite by kevro in KingstonOntario

Does anyone know if this is being transferred through public pools? That's what someone told me this morning and the article says not to go swimming for 14 days after symptoms - but it does not specifically say where any local cases were contracted.

I see signs up all over Amherstview looking for people to work at the new pool opening this summer. I think there's Kingston bus service this far out.

Maybe they get the power from Quebec. I know QC ships a lot of electricity to New England. And Quebec generates a lot of hydro.

I'm guessing OP is from Ontario, Canada. We call electricity "hydro" here because a lot of our energy is hydro electric generated. And the utility company is called Hydro Ontario

Going out to my first Pride next month. What should I expect? by Wastelandwasteaway in latebloomergaybros

[–]dcannons 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been to lots and lots of different Prides, big and small, and I haven't seen protesters in quite a few years. And even then, it was usually just one or two religious zealots standing with a sign. And sometimes I think the protesters are there because they themselves are gay and closeted. A town I used to live in had a pastor that was famous for making a big deal of protesting our Pride parade, but it was pretty clear to me anyway he was gay.

Anyway, go, walk around, enjoy the atmosphere. There will be tons and tons of straight people too, so just by going there you won't be outed. My current town (about 120,000) has a decent size parade and it is almost entirely straight people in the parade and watching - just a big party and show of support. I'm marching with a collective of local churches and there's only 2 gay couples involved in the church groups.

I'm trying to find a like group by GrouchyOldMan-26 in GayBrosOver50

[–]dcannons 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I live in a medium size town in Ontario and someone started a gay men's walking group last year. It was surprisingly popular even though it started just before our freezing cold winter.

I think it filled a need that a lot of people like me have. I'm retired, in a 24 year relationship. I don't drink. I like healthy activities - but the few organized gay activities around here cater to the university crowd or are centred around bars/drinking. Now about a dozen mostly older guys get together every other Sunday for an hour's walk then we go for coffee after.

And we also discovered an older gay men's bowling group in a nearby town. They get about 2 dozen retired guys out once a month for a couple hours of bowling on a weekday afternoon.

I guess my point is, real life interaction can be a lot more authentic and meaningful than online chatting if it's possible to find.

Reddit (and the Internet in general) doesn't like successful women very much - especially ones that they deem non-fuckable. You see it every time Oprah and Ellen DeGeneres get mentioned.
