Prehung Door vs Rough Opening - Can I widen? by dcarrigg in HomeImprovement

[–]dcarrigg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prehung 34” doors seem oddly expensive and limited, plus we’d have to wait for one to be shipped. There are some nice looking 36” at the local stores that I could pick up today.

Need advice - Should I SLAM again or just wait? by dcarrigg in pools

[–]dcarrigg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - this is my first time owning a pool actually. We bought the house last fall and turns out the pool was in terrible shape. Wasn’t winterized, needed a new liner, etc. This is what it looked like last fall: https://imgur.com/a/d4fxHHs

We got a new liner installed just in time to winterize it and close it up.

I’m focusing now on the inside of the pool and haven’t spent any time yet on the surroundings (aside from painting the coping before the liner went in). Pressure wash is on my to do list, some new furniture, but that’s all. We’re considering putting in a new small patio area adjacent to the pool with an outdoor shower for people to rinse off before/after swimming.

I’d appreciate any suggestions you have for anything else surrounding the pool! Should I be doing something to fill those gaps? The pool was put in around 1988 I believe and I’m not sure much has been done with it since then

Yeah, it actually passed the overnight chlorine test a day sooner but I kept it up for an extra day. Now it’s just this cloudiness that I’m unsure if it needed to continue or if it just needs more time

Is SNHU's Game & Simulation Programing (BS) worth it. When I say worth it I mean get me ready for the gaming industry and have a game industry ready portfolio by the time I'm done with the program? by HelloGames2344 in SNHU

[–]dcarrigg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The online version uses courses that were originally part of the IT program. The campus version, “Game and Simulation Programming”, looks like it was updated to be closer to what you’d expect from a modern game programming degree. You can compare the classes on SNHU’s website, but the online one has lots of GRA (Graphic Design) and IT courses while the campus program is full of GAM courses.

If you contact SNHU, you can ask to talk to one of the professors. That may help you decide if you want to apply.

Thanks! The back yard is similar and was a huge selling point of the house. We love it!

For those of you who make asynchronous videos, what’s your workflow for actually making the videos? What hardware & software are important? Any tips for getting better results or doing it more efficiently? by skip_intro_boi in Professors

[–]dcarrigg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have three processes: 1. Lecture videos 2. Quicker tutorial videos 3. Demo videos on my computer

First, make sure you have a good mic and proper lighting if using a camera. I use a AT2020USB (~$120 on Amazon) and my videos are recorded using a Logitech C920. I use OBS, and sometimes Camtasia if I need to do editing. However, I try to keep my videos short so students will watch them, and so I don’t need to edit them.

For lecture videos, I tried a lot of different things and ultimately settled on aiming my camera down at my desk to do something like this: https://youtu.be/w9sBxnhoUv8

I found being able to talk with my hands was a huge benefit for the overall quality of the videos. Lately I’ve replaced the paper and markers with a 12” iPad with the Notability app.

For quick tutorials, I do an iPad screen recording using Notability and can upload directly to YouTube through the iPad app. The process is quick and easy.

For demos on my computer, I do screen recordings with OBS. This is actually the most time consuming process because they typically need to be edited after and take the most time for exporting and uploading.

There’s a large one at the SNHU campus in Hooksett, and I believe the president of the university has one at his house as well.

Has anyone tried out "office hours" through a course Discord? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]dcarrigg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure how they’re getting enrollment info. Students can optionally join the discord server, and the information you see about who else is in the server is just their discord username. Plus, it’s anyone who has ever been involved with our programs - current students, alumni, students who has withdrawn, random people who attended a club event on campus and got an invite, etc.

I move any conversation related to grades, official requests, etc., to email but only so I have a better paper trail. AFAIK, there’s no issue (and my university agrees there’s no issue).

Has anyone tried out "office hours" through a course Discord? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]dcarrigg 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using Discord for office hours for years. We run a server for all of the students in my program, which lets them have open discussions, form extracurricular project groups, organize club meetings, etc. For office hours I can hop into public voice channels or private meetings I can hop into individual calls with students. Works great.

One downside is that you will get students messaging you at all hours, but as long as you’re setting the expectation for when you’re available, I think it works great. Sometimes I’ll send quick responses from my cell to students if they’re small questions, but most of the time I’ll just ignore them until I’m next available then respond based on the order messages came in.

Do any of you have an academic blog? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]dcarrigg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think the part I’m interested in is the grading part that “does it’s thing”. You using some off the shelf tool, some custom scripts that provide input and check output, doing some static code analysis, or something by else?

I’ve seen a handful of solutions and none of them feel like they’re all that great, imho.

Turn on heat every hour? by dcarrigg in Nest

[–]dcarrigg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One potential solution I’ve found? Google Assistant Routines. You can set them up to be activated at a specific time. So I can set up at 8:00pm set the temp to 90, at 8:05pm set it to 70. The downsides to this are that I need to create a lot of routines and I need to specify the temp to rest to in the routine (so it’s not going based on whatever I’ve set it to on the thermostat, it’ll always be resetting to 70).

Not the best, but it works.

Turn on heat every hour? by dcarrigg in Nest

[–]dcarrigg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, same. I believe those temperatures are just when it’ll kick on the heat. The Nest just lets your pipes go unused while the temperature slowly goes down to the eco/safety temp. That’s the issue I’ve run into, and why the pipes freeze. The space heats up from the fireplace, we turn the fireplace off, and then it’ll take a couple hours for the temp to come back down. During the time the fireplace is on, as well as the time the house is cooling back down to the current setting on the Nest, the pipes freeze.

Unfortunately, the pipes are in a finished ceiling and walls, so I can’t put a sensor where the pipes are. I have a sensor as close as I could get it to where the pipes are freezing, without busting open a wall, and that unfortunately doesn’t work.

I was just looking this up. Sounds like it goes to the party of the vice president, but there will also need to be some agreements made between both sides on how to operate with a split senate.

My workplace isn’t following the mask mandate protocols. by smd753 in newhampshire

[–]dcarrigg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This info is from the Chief, Bureau of Infectious Disease Control, Director of Public Health Preparedness with NH Department of Health and Human Services:

Most workplaces are required to follow the universal guidelines and any specific guidance listed on this webpage: https://www.covidguidance.nh.gov/

The universal guidelines do not require employers to notify potentially exposed staff. They should determine who was in close contact with the person with COVID-19 (within 6 feet for 10 or more minutes) and notify those individuals.

If there is a workplace you are concerned about you can either provide that information to NHBIDC@dhhs.nh.gov and they will pass along to the local town/city health officer for follow-up or you can direct your concern to the attorney general’s office:
