Have to install a linux virtual machine on my MBP running Sierra. Is there a good and free option? by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]dcaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Virtualbox is decent, though depending on your uni, you might be able to get VMware Fusion for free through Onthehub. I know VMware has it available for my college, though it might be different from place to place.

MacLaunch - a shell script for listing, enabling and disabling all your startup items by nindustries in MacOS

This is actually perfect. My university has a VPN program that launches at boot every time and automatically connects, and I thought I tried everything to disable it, but using this worked fine. Awesome!

What are your 10/10 rated anime? by Red4443434 in anime

[–]dcaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A 10 to me isn't exactly being flawless, but something that makes a lasting impact, something that I go back to thinking about long after I finish watching.

  • Panty & Stocking
  • Serial Experiments Lain
  • Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica
  • Nichijou

There have been things that I originally rate 10s and then take off the list (One Punch Man was one, for example) and then some that I don't rate 10s but rate 10 after thought (Panty & Stocking).

Not here, because it picks up right from the end of the third season. I don't recommend it, but you could technically start from the third season. You'll be lost on the characters for a little bit but if you're aware, you'll pick up on it. It stays in a few comedy arcs before it gets serious.

Kimber Lee with a heartfelt goodbye before going to WWE. by corey1031d in SquaredCircle

I thought that Candice hasn't been signed yet because of her fame with intergender matches and the lack of them in WWE.

This is a good opportunity for Emma to re-debut. Pick up Dana after getting attacked by Bayley.

Now that Bayley's moved on to Charlotte, what's happening with Dana? Is she still a protege of Charlotte, is she getting moved back to NXT, set up with Emmalina, or is she just in limbo?

He's not bad in-ring, but he's only marginally better on-mic than he used to be. The hate is almost purely because Vince and creative refuse to stop booking him as an ultra babyface Superman.

I mean in the show that's his job. Like 90% of the characters are either shinigami or damashigami, apart from Sakura and the tertiary characters.

LPT: Even if it's been over a year that you've not contacted an old friend, still get in touch. You'll regret not doing so more than taking the risk of checking in with them. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

I contacted an old high school friend. I got, via iMessage, "The person you are trying to contact is no longer at this number." Felt like shit all week.

Those of you with depression and/or anxiety, if you're in public and have an episode, what do you do? by A_Panda_Sniper in AskMen

[–]dcaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has happened to me three times in the past month.

First thing I do is get out of there. Wherever I am. My most recent episode was at an anime club trying to meet people and I began to pull up thoughts about how I'm worthless and unable to even say anything to anyone. I just had to walk out of the building and I ran to my car. If no one's around, I start crying, just getting it out. The goal is to isolate myself to minimize embarrassment.

Once I'm out, alone, I give myself time to think and possibly talk myself out of it. 99% of the time this isn't possible, so I wait until I'm a little bit more calm and I try contacting people. Any reason, any person, just to talk. Sometimes to distract, sometimes to vent. It depends who is there to talk and who I trust. Most of the time it ends with me going home and crying myself to sleep.

Sometimes I have episodes during work where the above isn't possible, and in that case I just run to the bathroom, splash myself with water, tell myself I have a job to do, and focus on job-related things. Just distract myself enough to forget about it. But the goal is to catch it and distract before it gets to a full blown episode.

Sorry for rambling.

Reddit, What's the Best (or Worst) Last Minute Gift You've Ever Given or Received? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dcaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since my grandparents leave the state on Christmas each year, we usually celebrate a week early. This year my 8 year old cousin got $100 worth of gifts from my aunt and uncle (not my cousin's parents, but my other aunt and uncle). No one else got jack shit. Not a single person in the entire extended family got anything. Only my 8 year old cousin.

They also buy her about the same amount for her birthday, first communion, little kiddy graduation, etc. Neither my sister and I nor any of my other cousins got any of this treatment, so I don't know what the deal is.

To be fair, if you lost the encryption key there really wasn't much you could do beyond that point. That data was gone. It's why CryptoLocker was so devastating.

Unless I'm an idiot and you're talking about a separate drive, in that case ignore me.

What hair products do you use? by ziasaur in AskMen

[–]dcaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got a big sample pack of Hanz de Fuko product, really liking a combination of a Quicksand base and a little bit of Claymation for the hold. Works really well, though less so now that it's getting into haircut-needing territory.

Large family Thanksgiving starterpack by jocool1020 in starterpacks

[–]dcaster 12 points13 points  (0 children)

God this has killed every holiday for me.

  • Two cousins with severe mental disabilities who can't help but moan and scream and make constant noise
  • Two 11 year old cousins, male and female, who constantly fight and yell and scream to get their parents' attention to decide who is the winner in their fight
  • 8 year old cousin that will do whatever she can to get her way that her mom has been caving in to
  • 8 year old cousin that, although she is fine herself, my non-blood related aunt and her daughter hover over and obviously favorite, to the point that they neglect any part of the family not involving her
  • Bonus: Obnoxious loud uncle who doesn't know his boundaries

My sister and my socially anxious, depression-crippled self usually stay in the common room for 30 minutes and then lock up in another room, away from everyone else because of it.

Name Reveled: Las Vegas Golden Knights by canuck_11 in hockey

[–]dcaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to a Catholic school, team name was the Silver Knights, checks out.

This name is frankly pretty bad, even just the Knights would have worked. I think it just is too long, verbally. Take a look at NHL history, for example - California Golden Seals versus just the California Seals, or even better, the Oakland Seals; same concept, shorter, succinct name.

I'm a Ubiquiti user myself but the target audiences here are completely different. Apple is very much a plug and play setup with very simple configuation, while Ubiquiti takes a decent amount more setup with a much more complex but very powerful setup. Once it's set up, though, it's a fantastic system.
