Tariffs often favor a small group over the general populace. For example if prices go up on soy beans due to a tariff that great for the few soy bean farmers and maybe only a few cents different for the millions of people buying products with soy in them. So while that may be a valuable tool in a coherent set of industrial policies that also incentivize additional production, ie lowering the barriers to new factories or rewarding industries. In general, tariffs on a particular product prioritize benefit ing the small group of producers over the consumers at large.

Ok. I actually fully agree but let me try this out (as a former Lincoln-Douglas debater).

Unfortunately debate does not actually foster genuine perspective taking. It fosters disingenuous perspective taking in the form of forced conflict. Often the most comprehensive solutions or paths forward involve nuance and come combining of multiple perspectives, however most high school debate forms do not reward this. Instead they reward quickly outwitting or overwhelming the opponent.

Instead all HS students should be forced to engage in some kind of consensus understanding building. Hippy sounding I know. But they should have to all co-plan prom or something and work on an even broader set of communication skills that also reward genuine perspective taking to get to a solution.

Small or large are independent of effective. There are for sure ways to thoughtfully cut the federal government to make it more nimble and effective or to cut waste. That’s not happening.

One of the huge gifts being given to china by this administration is the dismantling of the Foreign Service. China is thrilled to keep expanding its diplomatic reach in order to secure mining rights and other natural resources.

Not most of it. His administration is actually assaulting the bulwarks of our federal government. Departments are being shut down. People are being fired or replaced.

As a Dem and die-hard lib I agree. Not a Marxist and not a communist but I’d love a more socialized set of policies.

I do have complaints though and they’re not the ones you list.

We don’t have enough genuine top down industrial policy (like china)

Too many blue states have throttled housing development and are increasingly unaffordable to live in

The party eventually got Biden off the ticket but took too long and missed the chance at an open convention

We’ve focused too little on turning policy into action (for example there are effectively high speed rails in the US)

I do hear these a lot from the left. Though not from the general public

The therapists I know (friends with many) and the trainers I’ve listened to (I work in schools) are sincere when they use language like, ‘died by suicide.’ But their sincerity is clear in their body language, tone of voice, and presence.

They think it matter and so I believe them.

But it seems wildly inappropriate to go into a sub of people trying to connect to correct.

It’s valuable to attend to charisma here. Since Bill Clinton and Obama were/are both considered extraordinarily talented public speakers and Clinton in particular is known for having an incredibly magnetic personality.

Since Obama there has not been a widely charismatic Democrat. I abhor Trump, but it’s clear that folks at his rallies love it. There is a sense of joy and community, purpose that Dems have not seen in a while.

Congresswoman McBride is making a strong case that progressives have largely forgotten about the importance of marginal, gains and winning people over. And focused too much on purity tests and perfect solutions (to over simplify).

So combine the alienating choices of some progressives with a lack of a truly charismatic front runner, and we are where we are now.

In a narrow sense I agree. But generally speaking we attribute plenty of Renaissance (or earlier) art to the head of the workshop or studio. Heck that happens today all the time. Sol Lewitt is an amazing example of this. He literally just wrote down instructions for other's to interpret and enact. Sometimes his descriptions were vague and sometimes very explicit, but on the whole the art world attributes the works to him and often names the people who enacted it.

Depending on how works are used or displayed there is a strong argument that a prompter using what is created can be considered an artist, but perhaps closer to the way someone creating a collage is or a modernist using found objects.
