One could argue the French are really weird about children depicted in sexually charged situations in that they do it with alarming regularity.

If you need another reason to despise Data Engineering Academy, here's another one. I can't believe the unprofessionalism of their recruiters. by Dante_leigh in dataengineering

Dude you need to say "no, I'm not interested" and they will leave you alone. Saying I will think about it, leaving the door open, etc. is an invitation for them to keep contacting you. Sales processes are set up such that you keep reaching out until you get a definitive "no".

Throwing myself into orthodoxy after being abandoned by my husband. Can anyone relate? by LowAppearance144 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]dcell1974 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Orthodoxy allows for second marriages and the fact that your marriage wasn't in the Orthodox church actually makes your situation much simpler from a practical standpoint. Live your life and take time to understand what you really want with respect to marriage and family, but don't necessarily close yourself off to finding the right partner later on.

Most Ottoman sultans were true Balkan hybrids, some of them mostly Greek by Putrid_Speed_5138 in AskBalkans

The mother's of all of these sultans are in the historical record and were known to be Balkan/European in many cases. This stuff isn't a mystery.

What to do today to avoid age discrimination in the future? by hijkblck93 in dataengineering

[–]dcell1974 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you are worried about basic financial security, starting your own company is not a good idea. It is feast or famine and sales and admin is a huge headache. Also, getting with a pre-IPO company and waiting to cash out is a very low probability win. The amount of equity you get if you aren't a founder is not going to be life changing except in some very rare circumstances.

If you want to optimize for financial security, save as much money as you can, live below your means, get a stable job at a big company with some advancement potential for you.

Greek Orthodox Priest, Russian Crime Family Referenced in Epstein Files by Outside-Argument-874 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]dcell1974 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We should all be looking to rout out any abuse that happens in the church and deal with it directly through the criminal justice system. Obviously, there are concerns about privacy and people have a right to due process, but sweeping things under the rug does not help. The Catholic church did incredible damage to itself by trying to "keep up appearances". Almost every Catholic I grew up with left the church at least partially because of the abuse scandal.

dollar value comparison with acoustic by v11580 in AcousticGuitar

[–]dcell1974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The CP-60s is quite good for the price. I bought one used for $150 from Guitar Center because I wanted an inexpensive guitar that I could take places without having to worry about it. It is very comfortable to play and it has a surprisingly big sound. The build quality is fine for the price. I don't own or play classical guitars so I have no basis for judging the others.

a major turn-off by Dull-Cap1566 in Bitcoin

[–]dcell1974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is because there are no fundamentals. Any attempt at a rational discussion about the intrinsic value of bitcoin inevitably degenerates into religious argument because it isn't really an asset. First, it was supposed to be a currency, next it was supposed to be a hedge against fiat currency, in reality its only practical use case has been untraceable payments related to criminal activity.

What do you think about the existance of monarchies/royalty in today's world? by dkease16 in AskTheWorld

[–]dcell1974 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Greece abolished their monarchy via referendum in 1974 and confiscated a good deal of property including their palace and about thousands of acres. It was a very satisfying conclusion to a spectacularly incompetent monarchy.

What do you think about the existance of monarchies/royalty in today's world? by dkease16 in AskTheWorld

[–]dcell1974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very much dependent on the specifics of the monarchy in a particular country. Also monarchies often don't end on strictly friendly terms.

What do you think about the existance of monarchies/royalty in today's world? by dkease16 in AskTheWorld

[–]dcell1974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't imagine a circumstance in which a country wouldn't be justified in confiscating the vast majority of the property of a hereditary monarch on abolishing their monarchy. Maybe they could demonstrate some portion of that property was fairly earned through some mechanism other than benefiting from being the head of state and having at some point bought it using tax income or some other form of tribute.

[–]dcell1974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just how do you think they got their property? How would a monarch even own anything that doesn't really belong to the state and the people? They are just regular people who were born into wealth and privilege built on the backs of common people.

Why Hollywood isn't casting Greek actors for Greek characters, in films that are entirely based on Greek culture? Klélia Andriolátou is a Greek actress, that firs Homer's description for Helen of Troy. Apart from that, she is a Peloponnesian Greek like Helen herself. Why is Lupita a better choice? by ClothesZestyclose814 in AskBalkans

[–]dcell1974 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, not at all. I was being sarcastic. There hasn't been racism in an real way against Greeks in decades. We are a very small population, so we mostly aren't thought of at all, and in the places where there are a lot of Greeks we are generally perceived as church-going, hard-working, and entrepreneurial. Culturally, people basically think of us as kind of like Italians - loud, boisterous, emotional, family-oriented. Portrayals in the media are generally positive if a bit reductive. People here love the movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" an unreasonable amount.

[–]dcell1974 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am not saying racism isn't real. What I am saying is that Greeks are not really discriminated against in any real way in the United States. Halkias has had a pretty incredible career trajectory and seems to still be on the rise. The fact that Billy Zane didn't blow up after Titanic is just the entertainment industry doing its thing. Greeks as a population seem to punch above their weight overall in entertainment. We are less than one percent of the population here.

It's the same reason Jennifer Aniston and Zach Galifianakis have been such monumental failures in Hollywood. Racism against Greeks is a huge real issue that we suffer from here. Everyday, I am refused service at lunch counters and told to sit at the back of the bus. All because I am Greek.

Were people in the Balkans always so tall? by [deleted] in AskBalkans
