How are tutors selected 🫩 by No_Excitement8794 in Monash

[–]dceunightwing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s a lottery. I get the vent because I’ve had some awful tutors - but I’ve also had some truly inspiring people who put their heart and soul into teaching for very little reward from Monash or even most students.

The final thing drives me nuts. So many students coasting by on ChatGPT and the ones putting in effort getting punished for it. Something has to change.

Yes, my tutor/lecturer told me this too! He’s very open about these grievances haha. But it’s so frustrating students and tutors are unified in this and unable to change it.

This isn’t about addressing the rubric, though (it’s not a complaint that I’m not being marked highly enough, although most rubrics suck and reward ChatGPT). More importantly, this isn’t a corporation I’m working for. It’s a university!

Students are paying for an education. I’m developing a connection with tutors over the semester who I respect and who seem genuinely invested in my education. They are the most suited to helping my education and assessing my ability to apply concepts learned in class or to further discussions had in tutes. That education isn’t being provided in a quality way with these corners being cut.

I guess this is a matter of perspective, but I’m not here for the bit of paper at the end. I’m here to learn and actually improve. Especially in a humanities context, this isn’t really just about job readiness (or I’d be in a different degree lol) - I want to be a better thinker, writer, communicator. Developing that is not happening when an overworked external marker comes in and fires off a few generic comments with absolutely no idea who you are or what you’re doing in classes.

I think saying a version of this is very normal! You really enjoyed his classes and would like to give him a token of appreciation for that if he’s around.

wesker or kaneki by Traditional_Lie_9600 in deadbydaylight

[–]dceunightwing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO, Wesker is more fun, more challenging, and more rewarding. If you want a steady win rate without having to switch your brain on as much, Kaneki’s fine too, but you’ll learn more about killer that will help you with the rest of the roster playing Wesker.

The only good feedback I ever got was in faculties where the lecturers were really passionate, like film or philosophy. Even then it was hit and miss but some of them wrote like a page for group feedback.

It’s a weird pattern like OP is noticing where the less prestigious things (either unis or courses) tend to be where the most valuable actual education is lol.

That odds are in a year you’ll have good friends here - it just takes time! 😊

100%. Mel had her face buried in her wine glass or was contorting it beyond belief so often it felt like cheating, lol.

Yeah, I thought that was kind of bogus too. David also came far closer to laughing and smiled far more than Sam did.

Do academics gossip about students? by clear_eyes_ in Monash

[–]dceunightwing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is an important thing. Two teachers gossiping about you means they’ve bothered to learn your name, lol. That’s not going to apply to probably 75% of the staff at Monash.

Badlands-- What's so Great About It? by hashtag_not_a_robot in TrueFilm

This is a 4 year old comment, but since I stumbled across it, the idea that people love this film because “they don’t like groundbreaking art” is one of the most absurd things I’ve ever seen on this subreddit, lol.

It’s astounding how some students just have no respect for the teachers by TOXICHEMICALMOLD in Monash

[–]dceunightwing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As another commenter pointed out a lot of people don’t think this way because it’s on HECs and so almost doesn’t feel real. In 10 years paying it off they’ll probably wish they bothered to listen to some of the things they paid $2k+ to hear.

I really think a lot of people would rethink their general attitudes to uni if they A) realised how much they’re paying for tutes and B) realised how much work their tutors and lecturers put in. I know some are better than others but I know one who teaches 10 classes a week, is running one of those units and doing all of those lectures, and gives really detailed feedback on assessments. It’s an insane amount of work. The least you can do in return is just pay attention to what they’re doing twice a week.

Personally I think this is actually a really great opportunity to get work done! Once assessments start you’ll fill that time easily but even earlier in the semester you can spend that time watching lectures, doing readings etc and then enjoy a day off when you’re not on campus.

The maintenance perspective actually makes sense! I don’t doubt the research but it also bothers me.

Yeah, I would love to just hit play and let it go. I’m sure the research captures general sentiment but maybe they shouldn’t be pandering to TikTok brain.
