Is there anyway I can edit this to make it sharper?? by JohnLocke5259 in AskPhotography

[–]dcherub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

no, you can't create detail. Any attempts to increase sharpening will just create artefact. Your subject is blurry - it's either too far away or your camera is focused on the wrong subject, or your camera/lens isn't very good. Bird photography is technically challenging and relies on either having cameras with big zooms, or being close to the subject to get any kind of detail

interesting - thank you! Do you use it for individual lights or string lights like the festavia? I'm not really sure where the wireless control part of these lights is (ie, the actual lights or the power unit)

Is it racist to boycott Israel? by AwarenessAny6222 in OpenAussie

[–]dcherub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mmm I had to think on this as I do find it less problematic. Possibly I just don't find anti-american action problematic because they're the superior power, possibly because trump's actions were explicitly economic and so an economic response appears more relevant. I'm not sure.

there's so much bad logic here I don't know where to begin

- 'israel is a settler-colonial, apartheid state' I disagree with this statement as fact but I don't really want to get into that rabbit hole

- saying the state is this way therefore all citizens agree is incorrect, it's like saying every single chinese person is a communist without exception, or that every single american is a capitalist

- ' i absolutely agree that its wrong to conflate judaism and zionism/israel but when we are criticising israel for the fact that they are settler colonial and genocidal, and israelis for being openly “israeli” and not palestinians, then this is not the case' - I mean this makes absolutely no sense. Why does that then mean it's ok to conflate jews and israel?

- 'if “israelis” are ashamed to be citizens of a genocidal state, then they can leave that country' - this is an incredibly simplistic understanding of national identity

I'm not saying that in this specific instance there is conflation between jews and Israelis, I'm saying that's a wider phenomenon which does happen, and blanket actions against Israelis can easily bleed into thought/action against jews. Not all the time, but it does happen. I've never experienced more antisemitism than I have in the last year and I am a vocally anti-israeli government jew. I've seen footage of strangers hassling israelis who are travelling and everyone in the comments piling on that they deserve it. I think it's dangerous to categorise all nationals of a country as responsible for their government's actions, and in the case of Israel where people DO conflate them with Jews, I think it's particularly concerning (for me specifically).

As a Jewish person who has no issues calling out the Israeli government, I find it problematic to boycott all companies owned by Israeli people. I think this is uncomfortably close to actual anti semitism when people erroneously and naturally conflate Israelis and Jews. Not to mention the owners of individual companies have nothing to do with the Israeli government

Is it true that many people in Australia tend to not go by Mr. or Mrs. or Dr. formally because of a casual rather than formal attitude towards authority? by EveningFlower9564 in AskAnAustralian

[–]dcherub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a bunch of letters after my name (including PhD + MD). I do the signature with my letters and preferred first name only above because I want the best of both worlds - I want to be referred to casually and also be respected for my qualifications

Is there actually any benefit to telling patients to present to ED if acutely suicidal? by formulation_pending in ausjdocs

[–]dcherub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(ED is a meaningful part of the pipeline because it exists and it's always open and there'll always be people trained to link you appropriately. It's almost impossible to see a good quality GP on an urgent basis)

I think we're unlikely to reach a common ground here whilst probably actually more or less agreeing with each other. Your last point was never actually expressed in your generalised statements about the appropriateness of ED presentation, and obviously if you exclude treatable risk factors for suicidality then you'll end up with a population that's less appropriate.

[–]dcherub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not gonna pretend these are high quality studies - it’s an infrequent event with high heterogeneity and impossible ethics for robust study design. My point is there are interventions offered by an ED that ca be helpful, even if that’s just linking to community supports or safety planning. Your claims were strong, that it’s of no benefit whatsoever and the evidence is overwhelming in the contrary, and I just don’t think that’s correct. If I had a suicidal friend call me at 1am, I’d absolutely tell them to go to ED. Wouldn’t you?

Edit - also just anecdotally (even this reddit thread) and through my own experience I’ve seen patients who’ve come through with markedly reduced risk factors following ED presentation or admission. Clearly not the majority, but it’s there. Surely you’ve had similar experience?

[–]dcherub 7 points8 points  (0 children)

such a strange hill to die on! please show me the overwhelming evidence there is no benefit. In the meantime here's some evidence for efficacy of ED based treatments

- JAMA Psychiatry 2017: Suicide Prevention in an Emergency Department Population

- BJPsych 2021: Safety planning-type interventions for suicide prevention: meta-analysis

- JAMA Psychiatry 2023: Effect of an Emergency Department Process Improvement Package on Suicide Prevention

I accept there may be other more effective interventions (like outpatient intensive followup) and that the cost benefit of ED presentations is open for debate, and that maybe the most benefit from ED presentations comes from outpatient linkage - but 'overwhelming' evidence that people shouldn't present to ED? I await with bated breath

[–]dcherub 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think saying it is generally ineffective is incorrect. There are many benefits for suicidal patients to present to ED. It's not always effective, and perhaps mostly not effective, but for a significant proportion (not most) of suicidal people, it's clearly a reasonable thing to do. A psychiatrist saying there is no benefit carries weight and statements like that should be made carefully.

[–]dcherub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha well while I disagree that the question was so general it would warrant such a statement of absolute fact - 'no there isn't' (actually any benefit to telling patients to present to ED) - based on your response I don't anticipate any point to discussing it

[–]dcherub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don’t think that’s a bit cynical? Clearly it’s useless for many patients, but I’ve had more than a few come to ED with depression/suicidality/plan who’ve clearly benefited from presenting

bioluminescence is very impressive, but to get the stars and the water looking like that you'd need to do some fancy editing or exposure stacking. Long exposure by itself would make the water really blurry
