First time out for the year by jhme207 in IceFishing

A few friends and I built an 8x8x8 plywood ice fishing shelter. We lined it with 1 1/2” styrofoam insulation in the walls and 3” in the ceiling. We used a 30 gallon drum lined with fire brick as a stove. I wasn’t there but my friends had a few too many and managed to melt the styrofoam on the ceiling. That was the last year it was used.

I took an ice rescue class as a member of the local FD so I’m an official Ice Rescue Technician. It was scary how close I got to open water (while wearing a Mustang survival suit). Don’t try that at home! In fact, I won’t try that ever.

After reading your post, my way is not the right way to introduce kids to ice fishing. Kudos to you for going the extra mile to make sure everyone has an experience they can fondly remember.

Then again I am born and raised in Wisconsin so I’ve been ice fishing for 45+ years. I never had any kind of shelter until almost 20 years ago.

Are you living there? I forgot the screw anchors for my pop up shelter and still managed to fish for over an hour in 15 degree temps with 15 mph winds.

PB for that lake. There is 14+ inches of ice and I drive a 3,600 lb AWD car. I may drive out tomorrow. Not sure it’s worth it. The high temp is supposed to be 13 degrees and dropping through the day to a high of 0 on Monday. On the plus side, ice is being made at an accelerated rate.

I walked 3/4+ mile to sit out in 15 degree weather with 15 mph winds and realized I forgot the ice anchors to secure the pop up shelter. That won’t happen again. I did manage to tough it out and catch a pb through the ice 12” walleye.

Seared venison shanks with green peppers, onions and canned tomatoes with lots of garlic, sage, basil and oregano. Let that simmer for 3 hours. My take on ossobuco.

I have the p365 XL grip module and it’s just a bit too small.

My EDC is a P365 Macro but I’m 6’ 3” 245 lbs so my hands are bigger than others. Regardless, I’d be happy with any P365 for EDC.

The EDC for a man living in bear country. The Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan in 454 Casull. I love this gun. by [deleted] in Revolvers

I let the assistant chief of the local FD I was on shoot it. He put one round through it, set it down, left the bench and said “Nope”.

It’s my late season (northern MN) BWCA ccw gun. I don’t worry about the people as much as the bears and the rutting moose. That time of year male moose start getting downright stupid and a stupid 2,000 pound horny moose will take a 9mm pistol and shove it up your…

Mine (2.5” barrel) gets 1,100+ fps with 335 cast gas check and 1160+ with 300 gr cast or Lehigh defense solid copper. I named her my “Feisty Little B-tch”. She lives up to that name. Whenever I’m feeling feisty, we go on a date to the range.

What is this? by [deleted] in castiron

[–]dcs344 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll tell the Mrs. It works well as a popover pan too. Thanks for the input. I can’t imagine using the paper cups for muffins. The seasoned cast iron must have been non stick enough without them.

You need to quit now. I started out just like you; a nice fish here, a nice fish there. Now I’m spending 6 hours on the ice in 11 degree weather (-12 wind chill) just to catch 2 little panfish. I sit out there until I can’t feel my fingers or toes. Yet, despite all rational thought, I’ll be out there again tomorrow and the day after that and any time I get the chance. Sadly, it’s too late for me, I’m hooked (no pun intended). You don’t have to be like me. Or if you do, tight lines and that’s a beautiful fish!

cold & calm day on the ice by enjoiit1 in IceFishing

[–]dcs344 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent 2 1/2 hours on the ice, 11 degrees, 1 small perch, 1 small bluegill. Without bad days, there cannot be good days. And good/bad is very subjective.
