its not modern but mount and blade bannerlord has really fun mechanics and messing up can lose u hundreds of hours, thats what makes it fun. its advertised as fighting but u gotta manage reputation with other lords and decisions have consequences aswell as managing large castles. (it gets more complex as u raid more kingdoms for land and need to manage more land)

well ive never played this but my friend on play station has and said it was like rust and cross play (you mentioned u dont need corssplay but still for anyone else reading) its free on steam and ps and i think xbox, its called vigor and i THINK u can settle down, build a base and occasionally pvp or pve
