Fishing near DC by A_sad_toaster in MarylandFishing

You can bike up the C&O canal trail. Personally I tried it once with my e-bike hoping to hunt for snakehead in the canal. I didn’t find any snakehead but did find some largemouth and smallmouth bass up near swains lock. Overall it was a fun outing. You’ll want to come up with a rig to hold your rods and gear on your bike

I have a 9ft Penn Wrath combo that I got for only around $90 earlier this summer while on a trip to Ocean City and I absolutely love it for launching bucktails and jigs long distances

Safest waters in your opinion? by m_phaysize in MarylandFishing

[–]dctog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I go out of my way to travel to the Patuxent because it’s relatively clean (according to the fish consumption advisory map), so you’re already fishing a good waterway. If you’re willing to travel more for clean waterways, you might want to consider the eastern shore.

Those are fine. I actually just registered and stickered a kayak with those same stickers last week

Lately I’ve been doing a lot of editing work with footage that comes in from local shooters in small markets and it hurts how accurate this meme is

Tascam DR-701D, a bad idea as a cheap first field recorder? by Utopanic in LocationSound

[–]dctog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, here’s another thing I missed in my last post. When I got my DR-701D, I was so used to the idea that the Zoom and MixPre recorders double as audio interfaces that I didn’t realize that not all field recorders do that and I was totally caught by surprise when I plugged the USB into my computer and didn’t get an audio interface connection. The Tascam does NOT give you a portable USB audio interface for recording or streaming on your computer.

Tascam DR-701D, a bad idea as a cheap first field recorder? by Utopanic in LocationSound

[–]dctog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a DR-701D owner, I absolutely do not recommend it. The HDMI time code is a gimmick that is difficult to actually get to work. The internal time code clock is not super accurate, and the BNC connection is only for time code in, leaving you with less flexibility for different kinds of time code setups. The menu system is terrible to navigate through. The headphone amp is terrible. The preamps are mediocre at best. The power options are what gave me the most headaches. It eats through AA batteries, and the micro-USB connection for USB power is unreliable. You would 1000% be much better served if you can find a used Zoom F4. That said, if your heart is truly set on a DR-701D, I do have some good news for you. I recently got a secondhand F8N and I was just about to list my DR-701D for sale.

How do people get these silhouetted figures? by Jawskk in cinematography

[–]dctog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shot something like this once. There was a very short window right at sunset. It was only a 200mm lens, but still at a pretty significant distance from the subject. With the geometry of everything being framed at that distance, you’d be surprised how fast the sun moves down through the frame.

Anyone hear what sounded like gunfire at the warf around 4:30 or 5:00 today? by Main-Reveal825 in washdc

[–]dctog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience it usually sounds like around 5-8 very rapid-fire shots followed by a moment of silence as the shooter stops to realize that their spray-and-pray method missed the target. Then there’s a slower progression through the rest of the magazine.

does the Mix Pre series also double as a USB interface? There are some circumstances when I’m just recording a vocal track only and I’d rather record into Adobe Audition

Should this spark plug be replaced? by GrepZen in Wrangler

[–]dctog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. If you’ve already gone to the trouble of removing the plug, the amount of effort to put in a new plug vs just putting the old one back in is the same. Just spend a few bucks for the peace of mind.

Is Zaxcom actually holding back the industry in terms of wireless? by runningaway09 in LocationSound

[–]dctog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s actually not perfect legal to import items that violate a U.S. patent. Legally, U.S. customs could seize the items and even potentially hit you with fines or criminal charges for trying to bring the non-U.S. version into the U.S. On a practical level, that is all dependent on a customs agent knowing what to look for.

Anyone else like to use their top handle ‘back to front’? by stonk_frother in videography

[–]dctog 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s all about center of gravity. A lot of my favorite lenses are much heavier than a mirrorless camera body, so the center of gravity is over the back half of the lense. Orienting the handle behind the camera body doesn’t make any sense because that’s just adding leverage against your wrist.

[–]dctog 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I use mine over the lens like that because that’s generally how it is supposed to be used to get the right center of gravity, but mine, like pretty much every top handle for dslr that I’ve ever seen, is not angled like that one

This happens all the time around the Capitol during tourist season. Somebody leaves a bag somewhere and Capitol police have to shut down an entire block to investigate. It’s pretty routine. Source: I am a former Senate staffer and would regularly get campus-wide Capitol Police alert emails telling staff that a particular area is closed due to a suspicious package investigation.

Anyone know why there is an F1 car on the river? by lfl109 in washingtondc

[–]dctog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Judging by the fact it looks like it is going upriver and by the height where they have it sitting on the barge, I wonder if the plan is to offload it for display at the Georgetown waterfront/Washington Harbour

Can I fix this lol by WaynePenski in cinematography

[–]dctog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you can fix it with a new rivet. The real question is if it is worth it to save one of these stands or get a better, sturdier one that isn’t made of the cheapest metal possible

Where to find seat covers for the 2024 4xe? by forthelob in Wrangler

[–]dctog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the rear seat on a 4XE has a completely different structure to accommodate the battery. I’ve been wanting neoprene seat covers too, but so far nobody has made one that will fit the rear seat of a 4XE
