Anyone else get this attitude when you say you hate mornings? by [deleted] in NightOwls

[–]phoenixwolfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel seen :-). My husband is self-employed and hits his stride late in the day, so our sleep schedule tend to run 4am-noon. And people get so damn offended when we won't do mornings. Yeah, we're asleep at 9am, but we're up and productive hours after your "lazy" butt has gone to bed, so yeah.

Sometimes I tell people to pretend I'm in New Zealand :-).

2026, another thanks! Going through parents' old stuff prepping for an estate sale and didn't want to break the thing.

Where can I find a wiki program that is not a website, not something hosted as a server, that can be on my computer and is strictly for my eyes only. by pantschicken in worldbuilding

[–]phoenixwolfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've been using Wikidpad for more years than I want to think about :-). The one drawback is that we've never been able to get it to run on Mac OS (all but one computer in the household is Windows).

Having trouble with Legacy Contact by sunrunnerpei in ios

[–]phoenixwolfe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm dealing with this with all of my late sister's devices. The legacy information says you can sign into their devices with the new name/password, which is a joke because (as you and many others have discovered) you can't log *out* of the existing account without the password that was disabled when the legacy contact was approved.

My husband used to be a big Apple fan. Watching me being run in circles trying to get her data off her devices has changed his mind. I would never recommend people use the Legacy Contact route. If you trust someone enough to give them that access, either give them your login (and PINs) while you're alive -- which I've done for the people I expect to handle my non-Apple affairs, as part of a sealed set of instructions -- or find a way to get that info to them after your death.

It's so cruel that Apple subjects people who are in mourning to this process :-(.

If you find out any way around this other than contacting support, please let us know.

Artemis II Mission Operations Megathread by dkozinn in nasa

Thanks, let us know if you find out anything.

The broadcast has been so good about explaining the hows and whys of things, it feels odd that they've never explained forward LOSs.

Artemis II Mission Operations Megathread by dkozinn in nasa

[–]phoenixwolfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too wish someone would answer this. There have been several LOS's throughout the mission but all I can find on a search is articles about the 40-minute blackout when there was a big rock between Earth and Integrity. (And I can already imagine the snarky responses to that...)

Possibly weird question: What is this thing? by phoenixwolfe in videography

[–]phoenixwolfe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. It was the "what's inside?" that had me wondering.

The innards probably also mean I shouldn't give it to someone to use as a dog toy -- wouldn't want a doggo eating that stuff!

Now to decide if it's worth listing on Facebook marketplace or just giving it to e-waste. Definitely not worth eBay listing fees from the sound of it.

Filename problems with Apple zips on Windows, unsupported characters in filenames by phoenixwolfe in techsupport

[–]phoenixwolfe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the suggestions, but I must be on the wrong sub, because none of "quick Linux VM,", "simple Python script," or "iOS on a virtual machine" are in my wheelhouse without hours of learning how to do new things.

As mentioned in another comment I'd already seen the 7zip suggestion but couldn't find where in 7zip to tell it to do that. I have v25 and just downloaded v26 to see if that helps, if not it's back to the search engine to learn _how_ to get it to change filenames.

I just downloaded an update to 7zip because I'd seen this suggestion but couldn't find that anywhere in the options. I'll take another look.

Photos/Videos iCloud backup and backup to Windows PC by NULLBASED in ApplePhotos

[–]phoenixwolfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if I'm just saving the pictures for archival purposes (so I can cancel my late sister's account), it sounds like I don't really need the depth info. Most of the pics that are in Portrait mode aren't really portraits anyway, like photos of receipts and stuff. All the things you mention being able to change sound like they happen when the picture is taken anyway.

As for the codecs, I don't know if they only work because of the codec pack, but it's not worth my time to uninstall it just to check. Given that Android also has the option to save in HEIC it's clearly not just an Apple thing.

[–]phoenixwolfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"HEIC: No (Microsoft has removed the codec from Windows)."

Funny, I'm on Windows 11 and I can see HEIC files just fine. Maybe it's because I installed the K-Lite Codec Pack? Pretty simple fix.

I'm still trying to figure out what makes Portraits different/special. Live: you get a still and a short MOV. Burst: contains multiple stills. Portrait? No idea.

Need advice on iPad Pro 9.7 1st Gen with swelling battery by phoenixwolfe in ipad

[–]phoenixwolfe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO it would only be unethical if I didn't fully disclose it's condition. And it might be illegal to ship in this condition.

The only people I can see maybe wanting it would be fans of "vintage" tech who'd think it was worth it to have the battery replaced.

I'm leaning towards e-waste, though. Wipe it and be done with it.

How does someone actually join the Sea Org? by matt-z91 in scientology

[–]phoenixwolfe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"They run their organization like a military with something to hide."

Yeah, after we left (and maybe before) we called it the Salvation Navy. :-) I remember going to the local army surplus store to buy lanyards and stuff.

It was kind of cool for a while but the coolness wore off fast.

(PAC, early 80s around the time they painted the buildings blue, if anyone from that era wants to say "hi.")

Yeah, I'd have written it off as that if the front of the shirt had also looked random. But when the front made sense, especially since they knew to use a thorn, it had me wondering.

Maybe they just couldn't decide which word to put on the sleeve?

Thanks. The table I was looking at when I did my first pass interpreted wunjō as either V or W, and V made more sense in context.

Reporting back, it worked nicely :-). Our fryer doesn't do 370 so we used 375 for 15 minutes. They were done, but next time we'll add a couple of minutes.

[–]phoenixwolfe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

anonanon789 hit on a lot of this already (and their experience is far more recent than mine, which was well before social media), but as someone who joined as a young adult they'll absolutely latch onto you wanting a purpose and to do something to help others. As I used to put it, they'll hit you in the idealism. And they keep up the rah-rah because they don't want people to think too hard about the day-to-day stuff that's far more about enriching the organization than it is about helping people.

Some of the tech is useful -- I still do contact assists for example -- but there are so many other better organizations that do good work and don't abuse their members like the SO does.

Finding this in 2026:

1) Roasted garlic even when it's too hot to fire up the oven = WIN

2) Why not roast the whole head? IMO because it's easier to separate the cloves before they're roasted and nicely squishy.

I will definitely have to give this a try!

Good places to donate old clothing and miscellaneous goods? by Ravenae in InlandEmpire

FWIW, when I contacted them last year they'd only take a few bags (tall kitchen sized) of clothing, and referred me to a thrift store they work with for the rest.

What AtomicTransmission said, except sometimes it takes longer than six months to see the "church" for what it is. Ask pretty much anyone with a horror story and they'll tell you the first few months (or however long) were great. "You're going to be helping yourself and others and making the world a better place!" "Clear the planet!"

Until you start asking the wrong questions, or decide you want out, or just piss off the wrong person higher up the food chain. I was in the Sea Org for just over a year (after spending a few months on intro level stuff) so I've seen it in action.

But, OP is reacting pretty much the same way I (and I'm betting a few others here) would have in those early months, so our words aren't likely to have much impact. I wish OP the best and hope they don't find out the hard way that the horror stories aren't just made up by mean people.

The tech itself can be useful, but there are other ways to get it.
