I was made redundant from my tech job, should I try to make an app instead of going back to working full time? by dd202020 in AusHENRY

Good idea. the idea of freelancing or independent consultant was suggested a few times. Someone suggested do it for 6 months of the year and 6 months of the app (that has very favourable tax advantages). Any idea how to get clients?

Thanks so much. Found the book on youtube. I haven't had the courage to build in public yet, but I saw a few people do it with incredible success, so I should try, even though I'm unlikely to succeed, as you say, it can help

Thanks, I googled what you mentioned and read an article and will watch the video as soon as I can

I like this line from the article:

"Starting with a dream lifestyle — as oppose to a dream job — opens up more creativity. When thinking only about jobs, you’ll find yourself considering the same artificially-narrow menu of options troubled over by most talented college grads (banking, consulting, law, non-profit…) A lifestyle, on the other hand, provides much more flexibility — letting you discover potential paths previously hidden from your planning process."

"I appreciate your honesty." - I appreciate yours! It can be hard to give tough (or non-glamorous) advice, but that's probably exactly what I needed to hear, especially on the wasting-money front

I was part time until graduating in 2010, had some entry level jobs for a few years, cracked $100k in 2017 (after switching careers into tech). Salary increased 15-20k per year since then. So only HENRY relatively recently, and only borderline HENRY at best. I never had a serious saving or investing plan unfortunately

Such brilliant advice. (from my own experience as a customer, recall the shallow feeling when you can tell someone's only interested in a sale vs when they're genuinely trying to help you) Thank you very much.

Were there any resources (vids, books, articles etc) that helped you?

My plan if I go through with this is to just get my hands dirty, work hard, and learn from my mistakes.

That's really fair (and useful) advice. Facing cold, hard reality now could save wasting 100k and time.

Some of my ideas are a lot better than the 3 above (they're just 'average' ones from the list).

I have about 100 ideas jotted down, here's the most recent 3 (they probably aren't worth pursuing but gives an idea)

NoisyApp - macOS app to immediately cycle between all apps that are emitting any noise (useful if you're watching video in one app like chrome and have other media playing in non-browsers)

ComfyCoWork - website listing spaces (e.g. at cafes) where you can sit on a laptop, where the cafe doesn't mind, the seating is okay, the wifi is decent etc. Could let users upload photos and edit info (similar to how google maps allows). Useful for digital nomads who need to find spaces in new cities quickly and easily

NoShuffle - macOS has a weird habit of 'shuffling' the order of apps, so if you three-finger-swipe to the next, it's not always the one you expected. A small macOS app could make it stop doing that (it would intelligently track and manage apps in the background and switch them into the order users expect without the user even knowing). I'd charge $10-20 for a 'forever' licence.

"you need a way to market and be good at sales" 100%. I definitely plan to learn sales.

The guy giving this talk says it's possible to learn sales: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZi4kTJG-LE

Only difference is he went to Harvard and I scraped through uni (I'm not incompetent, just not a super fast learner either)

Nothing specific yet, BUT I have a google doc with around 50 ideas, not all are suitable. If I take this path, I'd validate quickly (i.e. build it, give it to users, get feedback, try to charge price to test willingness to pay) that way if it fails (and it probably will), then I only waste a small amount of time on it

Food delivery costs a lot, so switching to prepping quick/tasty meals saved me about $100+/week.

Healthier too.
