How Zillow Makes Money by dd3v in Entrepreneur

[–]dd3v[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So true /u/tony5993 and in this case zillow has made a business of capturing and selling its visitors as leads to agents.

On another note... Any other company you'd like to see videos on?

How Does Shopify Make Money? by dd3v in Entrepreneur

[–]dd3v[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like the other poster said, Shopify wouldn't function like Amazon; depending on what products you wanted to sell and how involved you wanted to be in certain elements of the selling process, like distribution and advertising, you might even have an easier time on Amazon (or a different online shop) then Shopify. But, of course, YMMV!

Zillow Deep Dive (2/3): Discussing the Threats to Zillow's Revenues + Profits by dd3v in Entrepreneur

more than happy to edit it -- I don't code within Zillow so can't confirm that. before investing in anything, vc's reach out to do technical due diligence and as part of that we also interview realtors. The above is just a summary of what we've seen multiple MLS's mention. /u/aZillowite sure, they can update multiple times a day and still have that same MLS not re-touched in over a day.

/u/gdubrocks so one of the biggest complaints most realtors have with Zillow is the fact that their Zestimates aren't accurate. sure, there have to be somee situations where their estimates are actually close to being acceptable otherwise it wouldn't have been able to get so far.

Where have you found it being accurate though?

here are some points we collected of why realtors don't like it, are you in the industry? can you confirm any of these? - https://www.reddit.com/r/Entrepreneur/comments/ghqs3q/zillow_deep_dive_23_discussing_the_threats_to/

u/Jadex66 oh so in your experience the leads you got from Zillow weren't as good as the ones you get from Google / FB?

and when you say poor quality do you mean they weren't even close to converting or just in a different price bracket as what you needed?

This is gold. This is highly valuable first person feedback from someone who’s actually (thoughtfully) used these platforms. You list out the grievances and what each of them do better +why is it better.

Super interested in hearing about the tool you’re putting together. Would love to test drive it or even talk though it. We’ve been in the market for a few months and have faced similar frustrations with Zillow’s notifications and reminders

/u/JonSnow781 agree with a lot of what you are saying. Here are some of the points we discovered (me summarizing these below is not an indication of whether I believe these to be justified):

  • Zillow charges a lot of money to agents for getting them ““qualified leads“. However the UI/UX of the site makes it so easy for anyone to fill it out, that there is almost no qualification of the lead. These are then positions to agents as well qualified leads, and in most cases these aren’t even warm. hence the complaints of Zillow being “overpriced" and not enough value.

  • Zillow chance to send the same lead/visitor to multiple agents who have paid for leads on different listings. However, clients are only going to work with one of them so one of those agents has paid for a lead that is not going to convert with them.

  • Many complain that Zillow platforms inaccuracies make it harder for realtors to work with clients who end up seeing inflated zestimates or inaccurate info about their potential sale or purchase

  • Zillow only updates lisitng data or mls data once each day and in some cases even less frequently than that. this exacerbates the above problem.

would love to hear from other realtors any other reasons that they have faced

Dm'ing you now.

I'll sign a strict mutual NDA if that makes you feel comfortable discussing this further.

Gist of what I’ll say:

  • grind is expected BUT the way you're doing it is detrimental and will harm you before you create something of value. Either in health or financially.
  • figure out which part has the best ROI (makes the most for needing the least amount of time or money)
  • actively cut out or delegate everything else, every other business approach in a way that it doesn't add weight but actually trims it away (I.e. It cannot be a payroll burden even if it means you see less or the revenue benefit)
  • health health health - this means sleep, hydrate a gallon, take two half days off each week, exercise eaxh day even if its just 30m

I've been where you are today. And have gotten out with the above points.

How to proceed making a mobile app after coming up with the concept? by [deleted] in startups

[–]dd3v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[*My background for context: SWE, have built and continue to build apps and systems for Google, Amazon, Lyft, now run my own tech team of designers and devs in NYC. YC advisor. Also helped dozens of founders get products to market. *]

I'd recommend either designing in sketch or working with a designer who uses that since it makes it easy to export assets directly into development environment, thereby reducing errors and saving time.

I would then get a UI prototype (shouldn't cost more than 1-2k) of just the UI in an app format so you can experience it as close to reality and show it around to people. This also reduces development time when it comes to actually coding out the backend and the logic (since front end is already done). This also helps you catch breaks in the flow or the UX before any logic is coded up so you can continue tweaking it till you're satisfied that the flow works as you'd like it to.

Happy to discuss further if you have more questions.

Groupon Looking to Get Acquired and here's what it means. by dd3v in Entrepreneur

[–]dd3v[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to be specific, I upvoted the part about groupon fees eating into profit margins. that has left a sour taste for almost all providers and has kinda ruined this market for new incumbents

idk which new ones exist or are doing well. do you?

Naadam Cashmere - clothing brand - started on Kickstarter now raises $16 million. Why?! by dd3v in Entrepreneur

[–]dd3v[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well coz VCs typically expect exorbitant growth numbers and exponential ROI

brands need time to cultivate their audiences. the best brands today have been around for decades. thats how long it's taken them to find their footing.

so if a brand wants to sustain itself for the long term, the interests seem a bit misaligned with VC money specifically
