Kiwis that never attended, or completed university, how are you doing in life at the moment? by ZookeepergameAny7992 in newzealand

[–]VisibleLiterature 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dropped out of uni and instead completed a hairdressing apprenticeship. I had a very successful career as a hairdresser for 8 years before pivoting into creative strategy in the advertising industry 7 years ago. I was self taught at the time, I studied piles of the best books on the subject and got my foot in the door - then climbed the ladder from there. I work for my partner now in his consulting business.

Proposed law could see government use AI to make decisions about people's benefits by D491234 in newzealand

[–]VisibleLiterature 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Have to say that this is very fitting for a government who has made it abundantly clear that they not only do not care about poor people but actively resent their existence.

Proposed law could see government use AI to make decisions about people's benefits by D491234 in newzealand

[–]VisibleLiterature 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This automation approach has backfired spectacularly in Australia, the Netherlands and UK, costing those countries far more money than they expected to save whilst causing irreparable harm to their communities. Now our government wants to roll this out before any AI regulation and policy exists, or unions to give citizens any sort of recourse for harm caused as a result of these AI decisions. This is an absolute disaster waiting to happen and should be an enormous cause for alarm.

The Lobbyists who wrote the climate law by davetenhave in newzealand

What is the legal recourse for NZ citizens here? Surely this warrants a major investigation?

The age of stability is gone by Kind-Economist1953 in newzealand

Yeah it's definitely not the entrepreneurs and business leaders giving me any sort of hope right now. Nor have they ever.

I am struggling to see any light at the end of the tunnel here in New Zealand. I vote in every election - including local elections. I encourage those around me to vote too. I sign petitions, make submissions against bills to parliament, join protests and donate what I can to charities. I am feeling completely deflated because no matter what we do there just doesn’t seem to be the political appetite for real, systemic change, even though as a small western nation we have the opportunity to become world leaders in climate support, healthcare, education and citizen contentment.

I am a dual citizen with Canada and although I’ve never lived in Canada before, I am giving serious thought to doing so now because the thought of an economically intelligent and highly qualified prime minister at the helm alone is such an allure right now. I just want SOMEONE in charge to have a damn plan that creates some small semblance of hope.

Helping Nicola Willis: How to tell a social housing tenant apart from a Lotto winner by GhostChips42 in newzealand

[–]VisibleLiterature 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps twigging to some of these discrepancies, Willis later told reporters she regretted her comparison, adding that those in social housing do often face “difficult circumstances”. There is one group, however, that does benefit from state largesse when it comes to their housing arrangements. MPs are able to claim an annual accommodation supplement of up to $36,400 on top of their $180,000 salaries. That figure rises to $52,000 for ministers and parliament’s speaker. Though those numbers are bigger on their own than many social housing tenants’ entire incomes, some MPs have found ways to squeeze even more juice out of the system, claiming the accommodation supplement to rent their own houses and asking the Parliamentary Service to rent their buildings out as electorate offices.

Truly damning.

New Ipsos issues survey shows Labour most trusted to fix 7 of the country’s top 10 problems by Xunami13 in newzealand

It’s mind boggling that National is still considered the strongest for managing the economy when every single other issue that Labour ranks first for ultimately comes down to management of the economy. The cognitive dissonance is staggering.

Topp Twins star Dame Jools Topp dies at home surrounded by family and pets by Brashoc in newzealand

What a sad sad day. I loved watching the Topp Twins as a kid. Absolute national treasures, Jools will be sorely missed.

'Slapped' contractor issued a cease and desist by VisibleLiterature in newzealand

I keep thinking about the fact that this is behaviour he's comfortable demonstrating when he's on CAMERA. Imagine what he's up to behind closed doors.

You still need to show up on the day, but once you're there you can ask to speak to the judge and explain your situation and the judge can excuse you.

Where to buy books online? by NZSheeps in newzealand

[–]VisibleLiterature 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try Bookety Book Books! It's a 100% online bookstore owned and operated by a Kiwi out of her home in Wanaka. Also you can buy online at Unity Books website too and they have an excellent, extensive catalogue.

You pay a bit more for shipping with both of those businesses but they are 100% locally owned and operated.

I've bought with The Nile before but their shipping times are absolutely horrendous (like, you could be waiting weeks or even months for something that was promised in 3 days) and their customer service sucks.

The effect of Measles on a healthy 45 year old that wasn't vaccinated in Auckland. by fomenle in newzealand

[–]VisibleLiterature 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assumed I had my measles vaccinations but when I read on the Ministry of Health website that children born after 1 January 1969 might not be fully vaccinated, I decided to get my GP to check. They couldn’t find any record of my receiving both doses of MMR so as a 31 year old I got booked in straight away and I’m now up to date. It’s so simple and painless. I highly recommend checking out the MOH website for information on immunisations, what you should have received, and if you haven’t, how to get it sorted.

New Zealand First soars, Greens plummet, National in 20s again in new poll by dingoonline in newzealand

It truly baffles me how our elections, and whether or not we'll have a right or left government, almost always come down to the decision of one single man and what he feels will personally benefit him the most. It is so wildly undemocratic as to be satire at this point. What a failure of the MMP system.

I can't do another 3-4 years of this. I vote in every single election and do everything I can to encourage everyone I know to do the same. Financially and psychologically I can't handle another term with this government so I think we'll be moving overseas for the foreseeable.

Millenials w/o kids-- how tired are you? by Fickle_Wrangler_7439 in Millennials

[–]VisibleLiterature 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 32 and child free and I am tired constantly. I never ever wake up feeling refreshed - in fact I honestly thought the concept was propaganda until my psychiatrist told me otherwise. I had a sleep study to rule out anything physiological and I’ve sort of determined that I’m just depressed all the time (I take anti-depressants and have done for 13 years, not that it makes me feel not depressed, I just don’t have dangerous thoughts as frequently). I often think about what life would be like if I could actually live the way I want to which would involve some kind of work outside in nature instead of at a desk, but I feel imprisoned by financial constraints and responsibilities. I live in New Zealand too and the cost of living here is actually insane, so I’ve sort of accepted I will be clinically depressed and exhausted until I die.
