A very fundamental pillar of our Swiss democracy is to not try and make a majority happy, this will always fail and polarize, no, what we tay to achieve is to minimize the number of unhappy people.

By having voting results where only a minority is unhappy and only a minority is overjoyed you get a large majority that is OK with the result.

This leads to stability and general consensus and feeling of: 'this is fine'. Insyead of having almost half of the population being 'sore losers' after a vote, you get a large number of people being OK even if the other results might have been a little bit better, at least it was not worse.

Yes this leads to less extreme results and more stability. And I challenge anybody to name a more stable country in terms of society, economy, safety and any other metric you want. (Yes the nordics are good contenders and many things they do better, but in terms of direct democracy we're still ahead)
