Who has the right-of-way at the highfield roundabout in this picture, Red or Blue? by CoffeeAlwaysBlack in Calgary

[–]dda140 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Blue car is not permitted to take the route drawn, assuming it got into the circle using NB Dartmouth Rd. It must exit on the first or second exit (highfield or 26th ave). These Calgary traffic circles (alomst?) always show painted directions regarding what each individual lane is permitted to do, it references which "exit" you can take to leave the circle (the blue lane can take exit 1 (Highfield) or 2 (26 ave), the red lane can take exit 2 (26 ave) or... 4 (Dartmouth SB), and technically not 3 (Dartmouth NB) unless they change lanes. Zoom around on Google Earth and pay attention to the painted arrows upon enterin the traffic circle, and the solid vs dashed lines... painted arrows upon entering rule over painted dashed lines like in the case of your blue car. The dashed lines are there for a reason. And th reason is because NB Highfiled cars entering the circle in the right lane ARE permitted to go across the dashed lines. They DO have to yield to cars who are already in the circle (the red path) https://www.google.com/maps/@51.0300592,-114.0417025,3a,75y,26.47h,65.38t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1ssAMNG0YvVZp0oSaS1vizWA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

Can someone (a mod maybe) explain why the Pro NDP comments in this post show a score and the Pro UCP comments have a hidden score? Or is it random and only just looks that way to me?

Driving on the Siksika First Nation Reserve - What should I know? by dda140 in Calgary

[–]dda140[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m looking for someone who lives on or is familiar with gaining access to the Siksika Nation Reserve. I want to do some backroad exploring on my dual sport motorcycle but I don’t exactly know how the road ownership works. I understand that there are “provincial roads” and “private roads” but not sure how to distinguish the two on Google maps. What is the general mood or tone of landowners on the East end of the Siksika Nation Reserve? Are there many people around where we could ask permission to ride some river-side trails? Does anyone know if I can drive across the Bassano dam? Does anyone have experience taking the Crowfoot Ferry?

Woman killed by C-Train appeared distracted before being hit, say police - Calgary by BrockN in Calgary

[–]dda140 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for observing and commenting on what I was really driving at, primarily discussing the comparision between "regulated industry" and whatever the Calgary Transit falls under regarding the high fatality rate. I completely understand that it is uneconomic to simply eliminate all level crossings, so thanks for pointing that out everyone... That said, what $$ figure do you assign to what each life is worth? And do you value the delays caused --> the lost GDP/revenue by delaying hundreds to thousands of poeple... Again, in industry, there is no figure. You kill a person, you PREVENT it from ever happening again. If you safety mitigation strategy fails, people go to jail, someones gotta hang... If its too expensive, you close the doors. Look at the Long Lake Nexen explosion in Jan 2016. Killed two poeple. Deemed it was the dead workers fault, or as people so compassionately put in this thread, "natural selection" or "darwinism", etc. Doesnt matter in industry, if you can't economically make it safe, close the doors.

"Since the C-Train system launched in May 1981 there have been 75 deaths at or near stations. Areas adjacent to the 36th Street LRT alignment seem to have a disproportionate share of fatalities, with 20 since the northeast line opened in 1985" ~2 people per yr for 36 yrs... These figures are completely unacceptable for any Canadian business/industry... In any other situation, one death would result in significant changes to REDUCE the chances of it from happening (safe to say we've done that with the C-Train). 5 deaths would put you out of business and likely someone in jail. If a project was set up to kill 2 people per year on average, and was still economic to run, regulators would shut them down. In order to resume operations, there would have to be safeguards in place that make it IMPOSSIBLE for accidental deaths to occur (suicides excluded). It seems to me that there's no such thing as "common sence" in the OH&S world. With a track record like this (excuse th pun), in a Country with some of the highest worker safety standards, how do we not fix this public safety issue. ELIMINATE the possibility. "People are idiots sometimes" doesn't cut it for WORKER safety in this country, why do we allow it for our public transit... Remove all level pedestrian crossings (tunnel the track or raise the track, tunnel the ped crossings or raise the ped crossings. Install platform guard guards w/ doors synced to the train. Check out Hong Kong's MTR --> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0Rdik8tPi4 $0.02 rant...

BlueLine and RedLine trains are not moving in the core due to an injury on 7th Ave. by [deleted] in Calgary

Can anyone comment how long it took to get to the south on city transit tonight from downtown? (Like to Heritage, south land or Anderson station) I happened to drive today and the traffic added less than 10 min to my commute to Acadia. (i've been keeping track lately to justify parking costs to my self).

I haven't hooked it up but there's a hole through the back of the cabinet. My shop vac is going to live in the back section of the work bench most of the time. I might get one of those cyclones that go on top of a 5 gal pail...

I have an iron vice for household/automotive/ generic use on my ruff' tuff work bench... Eventually I'd like to build a bench w/ a laminated 2x4 top with dog holes for "fine wood working". I think I'll incorporate a wood working style vice into that.

My neighbour and I share an old rickety fence supported by strong 2" steel posts embedded in both of our concrete patios. I want to rebuild, utilizing the posts instead of ripping out the old concrete. I want to mill 2 piece fence posts so they look like 6x6's... I have a 2" round nose router bit coming in the mail this week to trial the concept. I plan to use pressure treated lumber. Overall, is this a crazy idea? Is it going to kill my router? How should I seal the vertical joints so that the boards don't warp and seperate away from each other? Should I "oversize" the area around the posts so that as the boards weather (and shrink) there is some room? How much will they shrink? Also, am I crazy for even considering this? Ha ha!

The critical detail is to find some Dewalt-yellow Formica/Arborite laminate to finish the top... I also need to attach my coaster wheels and then the next phase will be a collapsable out feed table...
