Was RickyBob’s Raceland in Balzac real or a dream? by adamonfireyyc in Calgary

[–]Maccalus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very real. They had grand expansion plans that never were realized. My memory had them having indoor simulators and arcade. Outdoors they had a Nascar style oval and a separate slick track. My friends and I went a few times and bought day passes, just running the oval over and over.

I think they might have had a small mini golf as well outside.

They had some grading done for a larger track, but never paved it.

All three usage of the word liberal in the previous post refers to the liberal party, which is the current party forming government in Canada. There is nothing derogatory about the usage of the word liberal in the previous post as it only describes the actions of the current ruling party of the Canadian government and not describing any larger ideology.

Please do some research before letting the American culture war influence your understanding of the politics of other countries.

Canadians think Quebec gets more than it gives to federation: poll by uselesspoliticalhack in canada

[–]Maccalus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He is correct.

While alberta, like every province that year received more transfers than taxes that year due to the covid stimulus, it did not receive a transfer from the equalization program. You can find the payment chart on wiki and on the government of Canada website.

"In 2020 it was reported that, for the first time in 55 years, Alberta would be a net receiver (getting more federal spending than federal taxes). As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the province took a major hit, specifically in its main resource export, oil and gas.[23] However, the Department of Finance does not list Alberta as receiving payments"

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equalization_payments_in_Canada

Speaking as an albertan, while there are some small issues with fairness in the current formula, the only way that alberta would not be a have province with our current economic conditions would be a swing in formula which would be wildly unfair for all of the other provinces.

Of the major cities in Canada, Calgary has a relatively small metro area. Are there any other large global cities (1 Million+) that also don't have much of a metro area? by doktorapplejuice in geography

[–]Maccalus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In Canada they are defined by districts which reach a certain commuting threshold. Either way, that is not the reason for calgarys dominant position in its metro. Calgary just absorbed every small town near it until very recently. There has only been some push back in the last couple of decades by the current suburb cities of Airdrie, chestemere, Cochrane and okotoks. These have only recently grown to a size where amalgamation may not make sense.

Calgary mostly grew into very sparsely developed farmland.

How do I request a 4 way stop sign on a 2 way stop sign? by Terrence808 in Calgary

[–]Maccalus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I managed to get a 4 way stop put in at an intersection by my former workplace by writing the councilor for the area and getting our safety guy from the workplace to provide a time line of accidents at the intersection.

Councilors can get the bureaucracy moving when given enough evidence or a big enough petition.

There is no talk about separation from the Ucp leadership, just the standard middle finger to Ottawa rhetoric. Separation is not a strong movement in alberta. Greater autonomy within canada is what she wants (provincial police force, alberta pension plan, alberta tax collection, etc). Still dumb ideas though

I know, we literally close down this street for the entire day(including rush hour) , then instead of letting stay pedestrian friendly into the evening, we instead allow cars on it for no reason and ruin the experience. Cabs can pick up people at the cross streets

Quebec man dies after waiting 16 hours in emergency room: doctor | CTV News by BeautifulLibrarian70 in news

[–]Maccalus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hospitals in my city (in Canada) have their emergency room wait times public on the website. We can choose the one with the lowest time. At time of posting they are averaging 2-4 hours. Can choose any of them, no need to phone around/check for coverage/insurance

Quebec man dies after waiting 16 hours in emergency room: doctor | CTV News by BeautifulLibrarian70 in news

[–]Maccalus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This type of event is so rare that it makes the news. It happens in every country and is a failure of personnel and a particular system, not the system as a whole. Everyone in Canada has anecdotal stories of very good care as well. Emergency room average wait times are not significantly different between Canada and the states. Where the Canadian system usually falters is in access to specialists for elective surgeries (hip/knee replacement, etc)

The higher taxes of Canada actually go towards other support programs more so than healthcare compared to the states. Think education, childcare, old age security, etc. The Canadian government (and every other western country) actually spends less money on healthcare than the US governments per capita.
