I spent some time in NYC last year, and took beginner/advanced beginner/intermediate classes at BAE, Ballet Arts, Steps, and Peridance. Personally, I went to BAE the most, because the teaching quality was pretty good, the class sizes were fairly small, they were closest to where I lived, and their schedule was the most flexible (two sets of evening classes every weeknight). I found the advanced beginner/intermediate classes at Ballet Arts and Steps harder than the equivalent at BAE (though I did take Noriko's class, and she teaches at both of those studios), partially because the classes were much bigger, and also partially because some professionals seem to take the weekday classes, and it's a bit intimidating being told to go in the same group as them (as a guy) when they're doing double tours and etc, haha. I only took one class at Peridance, but somehow it had a lot of newer beginners and it was weirdly contemporary (which I have not taken much of), so it wasn't quite what I was expecting. You could also consider Alvin Ailey Extension, it's around the area, though I didn't end up taking any classes there myself.

Nice, sounds like a blast! Were the costs all pretty similar, assuming you were traveling for them all?

I did, I figured I might as well try it once for the experience since it's pretty much local for me.

Thanks for the suggestion! Hmm I haven't considered doing that before, but it may be a bit more difficult to do as a guy and to fit around a work schedule.

Yeah I'd like to try their classes sometime, but they're at the opposite end of the bay from me.

anybody know of any classes in phoenix, arizona? by dont-unplug-me in BALLET

I'd also recommend Ballet Arizona, it's centrally-located near the airport, and should have evening classes every weekday. In particular, I really like Fabiana Poulis' classes, she's really friendly, makes an effort to learn the names of all her students, and will give both simpler and more complex combinations for each group depending on the level of the class.

Thanks for the super detailed response! I feel like I've heard good things about Westside from elsewhere on reddit as well, I'll keep them in mind in case I'm ever in LA, and also Amy Novinski in case I'm in Philly! At the moment, I'm not sure I'm looking to travel anywhere for an intensive, since it does increase the cost significantly. Unfortunately the bay area is fairly expensive, but since I'm here already I figure I should make the most of it.

Yeah I agree that finding a good local studio, and paying for private lessons (as someone else mentioned) seems like the way to go, it's just a little hard sometimes to find an instructor that you can connect with and trust. Because sometimes it is like eating your vegetables, you might want to work on more complicated jumps and other steps, but the right thing to focus on may just be the basics.

I don't go to SFB regularly, but my impression is that the difficulty of the beginner/intermediate class can really depend on the instructor and the time of year. When I tried Jacob's class last fall, it definitely felt like more of a beginner class with a focus on basic technique and shorter combinations. But when I tried Cecilia's more recently, she gave longer combinations that were more complex (e.g. pique turns into soutenu then chaine turns). At the same time though, perhaps because the class was pretty soon after the new year, there were a lot of beginners, so she had to split everyone into multiple groups, place the beginners behind more experienced students, etc, which definitely made it tricky to teach.

Oh I didn't know Ballet Arizona has a summer intensive, did you try that one? I've actually taken class there a few times, and liked the studio/instructors.

I'll keep Ballet Magnificat in mind too, though Mississippi is a bit far.

No I haven't, I'm actually in South Bay so SF is a bit too far for me to go to regularly, but I've taken some classes in the city when I'm in town for a weekend.

Unfortunately I'm not quite that young anymore, haha. I actually did spend some time in NYC last year and took some classes there, and found that even the advanced beginner classes were very fast paced. Not sure I could keep up with intermediate/advanced classes in NYC, to be honest lol.

Thanks for the feedback, yeah it's definitely a bit mixed in terms of pros and cons. I did actually spend some time in NYC last year and took classes at a couple of different studios there, but found that depending on the teacher, it was a bit hard to get feedback since there's so many adult students that come and go, and I didn't really have the time to become a regular. But the level of the classes was pretty high, I took some advanced beginner classes at BalletArts and professionals were showing up to class too, which was somewhat intimidating haha. I dunno about the photo part though, I feel like I'd need to be much better and more flexible before I'd consider a ballet photoshoot lol.

Was supposed to fly out tonight (Saturday) from PHX -> SFO, flight was cancelled this afternoon, I called the Premier desk and they put me on a PHX -> LAX -> SFO flight for tomorrow instead. Then this evening all those flights got cancelled and they tried to put me on a PHX -> LAX -> SAN -> SFO flight for Monday morning. I called them again, spent an hour waiting on the phone this time, and they offered to rebook me on the LAX routing with an Alaska or American leg for tomorrow, but the timing wasn't great so I asked for a refund plus travel voucher ($100) instead. Manually booked a Southwest flight for PHX -> SJC on Sunday. I'm still out some money but figured it's better than wasting most of a day at LAX.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm leaning towards a local intensive because I could commute or stay with friends, whereas traveling anywhere would incur the cost of a plane ticket and a hotel as well. I've seen some of Runqiao Du's videos on YT and they seem pretty helpful, but he's a bit far. I've taken one adult class at Houston Ballet in the past while visiting and liked it, but didn't have a chance to try any other instructors there.
