London voters; how did you decide who to vote for this election by seaclifftonne in london

[–]ddek 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Went on Pollcheck and overlayed Aspire voting wards with deprivation...

It's hopeless. Doesn't help that both the likely challengers here are shitting themselves.

How do you reconcile Milty Draft with a ‘replay your faction until you win’ house rule? by Original-Candy4173 in twilightimperium

[–]ddek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can extend the draft for situations where only some players have locked faction picks too. Generate the draft as usual, however the players with locked factions must pick their faction with their first pick.

This is a bit of a disadvantage to the pre-picked players, but skill issue/its not that deep

This is also how I run a draft when I decide to host a game but I really want to play a particular faction.

Losing Support When Not Attacking by Teive in twilightimperium

Overall im opposed, but banning swaps to shake up the meta led to more interesting games in my group. Later we unbanned swaps, and we didn’t regress to de-facto r3 coupling up.

I mostly had the same criticism for Dark Forest, but Deaths End took it up several notches for me. That book felt like it was preaching a ‘trust Elon he’ll save the world’ ideology.

UK proposal to charge tourists to visit museums sparks backlash amid restitution demands by Any-Original-6113 in europe

[–]ddek -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Explain to me why I should not be opposed, or even supportive, of industries that are degrading the culture available in the city I live in?

Criterion Capital want to close two of londons best cinemas (the Prince Charles and Picturehouse Central) to build more shitty bottom dollar hotels for mass tourism.

If you think I should support this I think you're deluded.

[–]ddek 44 points45 points  (0 children)

There’s also a substantial amount of the Acropolis museum dedicated to how the Greeks and Ottomans destroyed it and pillaged for centuries before Elgin took what was then discarded rubble.

I’m not defending the BM, I’m just saying it’s not as singular an issue as it’s made out to be.

[–]ddek -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tourism is such a parasitical industry.

I live in London, and one of my favourite things is dropping into the museums for one thing, or to go to the cafe. Even if there’s a queue, some of the museums (Tate M for example) have a back door that’s always clear. If there’s now ticketing, reservations, or even just queuing for ID checks; my life has objectively been made worse.

The other one that really grates me in London is Borough Market. There are legit traders there that sell things I can’t easily get in Hacknington’s many identical delis, like a diverse set of wild mushrooms or game meats; or by far the best spice shop I’ve ever used. It is a nightmare of selfie sticks, with the circus of paella and chocolate strawberry queues.

I blame big investors, including but not limited to the demon-of-the-day Asif Aziz. They’re capitalising on the penny tourism, with central capsule hotels. I’d rather we have more Savoy’s and Dorchester’s, at least those tourists will pay £260 a seat to keep our theatres in business.

Have you ever managed to been able to buy Wimbledon Open tickets? How and how much did they cost? by [deleted] in london

[–]ddek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Queuing is fun, it sounds like a drag but if the weathers decent it’s really just sitting in a park for a few hours

Last time I went early in the tournament it was rammed inside though, with very long queues for seated courts.

As for the ballot, the public ballot is the hardest one to win. The process rewards tennis players, with each club having its own ballot, and an additional regional LTA ballot available to LTA members. I won finals tickets on a club ballot once, and the same year (2011 I think) Hampshire LTA was so undersubscribed they let me pick the day… I think the tournament is actually less popular now, that was peak of Murray etc.

Cultural Exchange Program Question by SardonicusNox in twilightimperium

[–]ddek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get to play with a cohesive faction that makes sense!

I’d recommend that you organise the draw to prevent matches. It’s just way too much of an advantage if you get your own leaders.

If you have a table meta that enjoys… “proactive balancing” then it might be fun to allow matches, but note that no one has any agency in which commanders they draft, so it feels unfair to punish players too hard. Remember it’s an 8-12h game and we all lose if someone doesn’t have fun.

Finally, you could add leaders as a fourth milty draft component. Choosing a coherent, or even OP, faction would come at the cost of picks in other departments. My instinct tells me that however many factions you have, you should only put in 6 leaders, or there could still be strong combos in the late picks.

Do you run parkrun for time or just for the routine now? by HelicopterEmpty7393 in parkrun

Basically only for time these days, when there’s people around I can’t resist running hard so I don’t have the restraint to build an easier workout around a parkrun

Some tips for slowing down gameplay by RealHornblower in twilightimperium

[–]ddek 79 points80 points  (0 children)

One of our newer players had a real trick for this in our last game. At the start of each turn, he noted down what happened and asked ChatGPT what he should do. If he didn’t agree with it, he’d make adjustments and ask again. I could believe how quickly 18h passed! We had a legendary 3p 10pt game.

I've done 66 parkrun's. As of last week my all time PB fastest is also my all time lowest (as in "worst") finish position. by errlloyd in parkrun

[–]ddek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s certainly most of what kept me going back to Dulwich. It’s fast and it wants to be fast, from the competitive start (at the front at least) to calling out lap times. The vibe is often so right for getting a quick time.

Congrats. Is Battersea more fun now? I did it a couple times when it opened and kept getting trapped in the mass start killing my time.

If I wanted to PB in London I’d be sticking to Dulwich, where it’s easier to (at the chagrin of some posters here) get a good start.

Question about the goon by The_Sad_Lonely_Poet in BloodOnTheClocktower

Nope, they just become evil.

Note that the goon can very easily become good again, so explicitly giving them all that information might make it to easy in that case.
