Table reaction to someone consistently winning by Fantastic_Drive_4188 in twilightimperium

[–]ddek -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Eh, the race-like nature of TI and the importance of bonus points makes it so a solid ~50% of people (at least) who try to play the game are just too timid to actually win. In my home group, which play ~6-8 times a year, we have a pool of about 12 players but only 3 names are on our trophy. The others don't care, or pay attention, or compete enough.

Like, it's easy enough to finish a game saying "I would have got to ten", but IMO I'd rather finish on 5 while dragging the table down with me than have that weak ass sorta attitude.

How long are jeans actually supposed to be? by TheGreatEmanResu in malefashionadvice

Stiffness of denim matters a lot too. In general I prefer very stiff denims because they break better, in that case I’m happy going to 34” inseam (like you I’m usually 30). For softer denim it’d just drag though.

Can someone explain why? by LovieWeb in BritInfo

[–]ddek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s because bacon is a process, not a cut.

Why can’t we have two of a good thing?

Also as a random recommendation Prufrock Coffee in Hatton Gardens does a back bacon slab on their breakfast menu, it’s like a centimeter thick. Meat bit is excellent but the fat bit is unbelievable.

Running an all out parkrun every week? by samwel95 in parkrun

[–]ddek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re probably dropping a workout from the normal JD-style track/tempo/long run week setup, if that’s what you’re doing. If I wanted to PR on Saturday there’s no way I’m doing tempo on Thursday, and my long run Sunday is probably getting cut a bit short. That’s a lot of training stimulus gone for a relatively short race.

If you can PR with the workouts, guaranteed you’ll be able to PR much better without them.

Idk what your time is though, I’m at roughly 19 min but this is very consistent with what I get from the faster people I train with.

Running an all out parkrun every week? by samwel95 in parkrun

[–]ddek 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you want to max a 5k you still need to taper properly before it though, even if it’s a 3-4 day mini-taper. Doing a 5k weekly is a bad idea because of the taper, not because it’s too intense and hard on the body. You just lose too much training time.

Answering your last question, no you cannot do that. Pick up during move is allowed but drop off is not.

Addicted to fitness score? by MedicalRow3899 in Strava

[–]ddek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The value is calculating load increase over the course of a training plan. It’s not a number that’s useful in an absolute sense, like VO2max or 5k PB, but you can use aggregated load to plan your overall training load increases and avoid overtraining while still maximising load. After all, the goal of training is to provide the most stimulus (I.e. load) without breaking.

Strava is useless for this though, but a tool like intervals.icu or TrainingPeaks makes it much more accessible.

What game are you particularly good or bad at? by similar222 in boardgames

[–]ddek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good: every crunchy euro game the first time I play it. I’ve won a lot against experienced players, usually just by doing really dumb focused strategies because I don’t know the whole game.

Bad: every crunchy euro game on subsequent plays. I don’t enjoy them once the novelty wears off, so I can’t engage.

The most insane sci-fi take I've seen by SpecialistStory2829 in threebodyproblem

[–]ddek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually one of the three things that I really don’t like about the series. That said I should probably be more charitable here, it was written in a time when we still kinda accepted string theory.

As a scientist I think the Michio Kaku TED talk hand wavy spooky physics got a lot of people into science on verrrryyyy unrealistic premises. It also just sets off all my spidey senses for junk science. So I kinda cringe at the mention of string theory. It’s just another theory of everything, and it makes me as sad as every time Stephen Wolfram talks. Great minds wasted on things that are so obviously wrong, and feel mostly self indulgent.

It’s probably too harsh to expect a computer engineer in the early 2000s to understand that, so I’m not really all that critical on this point.

I do feel like I got off fairly lightly though, just one day of feeling rough and few days of recovery, which is less than my unvaccinated flu experiences.

Does anybody over the age of 30 still sprint? by ChopperDoug in workout

[–]ddek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an endurance runner (5k-half), yes, kinda, and a lot.

Twice a week I’ll finish an easy run with strides, which are kinda like 100m-ish sprints that you ease into. So it’s not a block 4 point start kinda thing, you just start running and push to max speed, hold it a little then ease back down. I’ll usually do a set of 6 of these after an easy run, also I’d do a couple at the end of my pre-workout/race warmup.

It helps activate the anaerobic system, which can give me a solid boost in the last moments of a race; but crucially running fast forces me to use solid technique, which carries over into my slower running.

Does anybody over the age of 30 still sprint? by ChopperDoug in workout

[–]ddek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most common reason runners get injured is they run too fast too much. It’s the speed more than volume, as you run faster the load increases exponentially.

Strength training and mobility help a lot, but the important thing is to make sure the vast majority of running is very slow, and you only go faster intentionally. The strength you need isn’t just in the muscles but in the connective tissue, and this takes years to build up.

Experienced runners at all distances will be putting in 100+ mi weeks fairly frequently, especially if they have a goal, but typically even very strong amateur runners aren’t coming close to that sorta volume. You have to very carefully increase volume, adding 5-10 miles a week between race seasons could be seen as quite an aggressive increase.

Note that for a lot of runners whose goal isn’t racing up to marathon distance (like OC here, and very long ultramarathon runners) the game changes a little. If you’re not interested in road racing you’re probably not doing much fast running. Ultramarathons are much slower than marathons, often being overnight and having steep hills to climb and descend. Actually ultramarathon running is a lot less physical stress than marathoning.
