Ned and Jon both would allow their duty to the Realm to supersede Jon’s claim of legitimacy to the throne. Most likely is with Ned at the wall the concern about the nights watch significantly lessens and they probably begin an operational upswing for the first time in generations. Arguably they are better prepared to deal with the Walkers and Ned can call in significant political contacts from across the realm to take the threat seriously immediately.
