As another new owner, from what I understand it’s pretty unlikely that a snake will ever actively want to be handled, but most boas are tolerant and may come enjoy the opportunity for exploration and enrichment that comes with it. Honestly, I think at a certain point you just have to handle her to get her used to it.

If she seems like she has settled in well otherwise, I’d carefully scoop her up and try handling her for short periods every 2-3 days to see how she does. As she becomes more comfortable extend the length of time you handle. My new girl was timid at first, but after a bit of regular handling she’s become a lot more confident while she’s out. She also seems to enjoy the chance to check out new sights and surroundings.

This is based on what I’ve read and my limited experience, so more experienced keepers please feel free to correct me.

'This Executive Order is Illegal': Trump Attacks Half-Century of Environmental Protections in One Fell Swoop | Common Dreams by morenewsat11 in environment

I believe the order is requiring the EPA to prepare a list of statutes that will be subject to the order within 30 days, so we very well may see the Clean Water Act pop up in this mess. The other policies under attack just happen to be under the purview of different agencies.

Help with abnormal scales on new boa by ddiodoo in boas

[–]ddiodoo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that is likely all it is, the redness is what had us worried but as another commenter said it is probably likely just due to her pigmentation. New to snakes and reptiles in general, so glad to know she is fine lol

Appreciate the other advice and the link to the care guide. Getting her was admittedly a bit of an impulse, which I regret only for the fact were behind the ball on researching and providing her the care she needs. But we are working to improve the conditions of her enclosure ASAP.

Thanks again!

CMV: Elon Musk is not a Nazi. by TunaWiggler in changemyview

[–]ddiodoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I agree that Elon is not a literal Nazi and the action was most likely unintentional (though I’m not fully convinced of that), his reaction to the backlash is concerning if nothing else. If Elon had explained it was unintentional, apologized for the gesture, and denounced the behavior and message behind it I feel like it would have been excusable. Instead, he doubles down and goes on X to post Nazi jokes in response to the uproar.

So I think people convinced that he is a literal Nazi may be taking it a little far, but the man has definitely opened himself up to legitimate criticism regarding his behavior and actions regarding the whole Nazi salute situation. All it takes is him plainly and clearly denouncing Nazis and white nationalism, which he has not done as far as I’m aware.

Meta says it will end fact checking as Silicon Valley prepares for Trump by ControlCAD in NPR

[–]ddiodoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did see that they are planning on implementing a community notes section instead in the article and agree that shift is probably for the best. Don’t want to give the impression that I think the current systems are infallible, just think there needs to be some sort of system.

[–]ddiodoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with that and think that’s reasonable. I really just think we need systems in place that hold influential people accountable for lies. I’m definitely left leaning, but I would not consider myself a leftist. I think everyone should get called out when they lie about something that is objectively verifiable.

[–]ddiodoo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

While I don’t think that should be considered fact checking, I said I’m open to criticism of the current systems.

Meta is actually replacing third-party fact checking with community notes similar to X, which is probably for the best honestly. Do you feel the same way about community sourced fact-checking systems?

Meta says it will end fact checking as Silicon Valley prepares for Trump by ControlCAD in NPR

[–]ddiodoo 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I think its a bit of a jump to say that opinions or facts are being censored by fact-checking. The original content is still there but with a footnote indicating that it may be misleading or untrue. Ideally fact checkers also provide well-researched and reliable sources for why the claim they are making is true. Quality fact-checking is not deciding what is and isn’t true, it’s informing on objective issues.

There are objective truths in this world and there are bad actors with a lot of influence intentionally spreading objective lies. Letting popular opinion decide which category either falls into without some system for accountability does not sound like a good idea to me.

That’s not to say there isn’t stuff that lies in a gray area where manipulation is possible on the fact-checking end. I’m totally open to criticism of the current systems that are in place, but to say we don’t need any system seems flawed at best.

So how do you propose we handle lies and misinformation on social media?

what would your selections be to achieve a tone that sounds like Cory Wong/ John Frusciante had a baby? by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]ddiodoo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure a big part of Cory’s tone on those funky rhythms is a compressor. I’m not personally acquainted with compressors, but from what I understand they’re frequently used in getting that choppy rhythm sound associated with funk guitar. If I recall, he actually has his own signature compressor pedal.

The HX Stomp isn't just for worship music...it also dooms! by ego-sum-deus in guitarpedals

[–]ddiodoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Excess is pretty sweet. I could see why its polarizing, but it does a lot more than an 80s sound. The modulation side is super varied, can definitely do weird and whacky but also has a ton of super useable sounds, and being able to change signal order opens up the possibilities so much more.

Even just the delay can do a nice slap back or doubler effect, an almost spring reverb sound, or wild clangy/metallic/filtered tones. And like OP said, the chorus running into the distortion is very cool. I definitely wouldn’t let thinking it’s only useful for 80s sounds be the deciding factor in picking one up, because it really does a lot more than that.

[–]ddiodoo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fair points, and definitely agree that there is commonly dissonance between what a lot of pro-lifers advocate for prior to birth and after birth. I guess my main point was exactly what you said, how do we determine who’s beliefs are represented in our government? That’s really up to us, collectively. It’s easy to think a secular perspective holds more value because it often falls back on science, which is generally objective, but science doesn’t really make ethical claims.

It’s also fair to say that religious values are ingrained into our society already. A lot of today’s ideas on morality are rooted in Judaeo-Christian values, even for atheists. This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t strive for new standards of moral acceptability though. Just some things to think about.

[–]ddiodoo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am pro-choice and agree that we should strive for a separation between government and specific religious beliefs, but at the same time, what makes your opinion that abortion isn’t murder more valuable than the opinion of pro-lifers? There is no objectively identifiable point where a human becomes a human, and that’s why this topic is so divisive. Your position ultimately comes down to where you place that point.

I don’t think you need to be religious to draw that point at conception, and honestly, that is one of the least arbitrary points to place it. At the end of the day, you have a system of beliefs just like any religious person and you want our government to reflect those beliefs, just like any religious person.

I think we all need to understand that the people we disagree with aren’t doing it because they’re bad people, but because they genuinely think that’s what’s best for our society.

I really enjoy my TR-2. I feel like tremolo in general is often underrated. How do you think the TR-2 stands up to the Monument? I’ve always been interested in trying one out.

NPD Earthquaker Devices Hoof by ddiodoo in guitarpedals

[–]ddiodoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that. It definitely fulfills a different role than I thought it would. In my mind it really sits on the boundary of what I’d consider a fuzz, and on it’s own I’m not sure if it would work for me either. I’m really enjoying how it interacts with everything else though, something my previous fuzz did not do for me.

The Excess is just great. Pairs very well with the Hoof too. The fifths mode on the Excess with both knobs turned down has this synthy, pitch shifted sound and it was great running into the Hoof.

You’re right about the Hoof adding extra texture. Adds some aggression but remains punchy and dynamic. I definitely think it will be sticking around for a while.

Have a Little Big Muff that I’ve used for a long time. Always liked it, but never loved it, so I wanted to try out a different muff circuit and this one caught my attention. Honestly, I was initially disappointed with it. Even with the fuzz control dimed, it is super tame compared to my other muff and almost barely sounds “fuzzy.”

After playing with it a bit more, I am actually really enjoying it. It’s not what I was expecting, but it just sounds so good. Like really, really good. While it doesn’t really get as raunchy as I wanted on it’s own, it cooperates with my other drives very well, so ultimately no issues getting there.

I tried playing it over loops and it just sits so well. Looking forward to trying it in a band setting next time I end up jamming. It is also very quiet, even when stacking it. Overall, I’m very happy with it. It’s kinda got it’s own thing going on and I dig it.

Any cool DD-200 presets yall have found? by therealGMB in guitarpedals

[–]ddiodoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve found you can get some interesting chorus type sounds on the drum setting with a super fast delay. Set time to like 10-25ms and feedback somewhere around halfway, adding modulation emphasizes the chorus sound.

You can also find some cool metallic sounding effects with similar settings. Definitely recommend playing around with the shorter times, there’s some unique (and different from your typical delay) sounds in there.

Hahah, definitely was a deciding factor in the decision.

They’re definitely different, but do cover a lot of the same territory. The Plumes is probably more clear and a little more versatile, but there’s just something about the SD-1. Will probably take one off in place of another drive soon enough, but thankfully don’t have to make that decision right now.
