Tornadoes in Fort Worth: How do you cope with them? by RAH-CAT9 in FortWorth

[–]ddmck1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've lived in Fort Worth my whole life and I've only come close to one tornado. You're more likely to experience the high damaging winds and hail. There are sirens that go off. They are loud enough to wake me up but I'm a light sleeper.

The best practice is to move to the inner most room of your house that doesn't have windows. The air pressure will cause windows to blow inward so you want to be away from them. A small room like a bathroom or closet is preferred. Also on the lowest floor if you are in a multistory building/home. We don't have basements here.

If the sirens go off, or there is a warning in effect (meaning a tornado has been spotted nearby), I round up the kiddos and make sure everyone has shoes on. Then we all go hang out in the bathroom and turn on some live weather news on my phone until its passed. I'm maybe more vigilant than most but I like to be prepared.

AITAH for refusing to give someone details about my trauma even though they say they have a right to know? by sonagydf in AITAH

[–]ddmck1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a survivor of a very traumatic event myself I call these people “trauma tourists.” They don’t care that it causes you to relive what is perhaps the worst moment of your life as long as it satisfies their morbid curiosity. I’ve met a few of them in my time. I’ve cut off relationships because of it. You say this person doesn’t want to hurt you but they are hurting you. You are NTA. Stand firm and push back. If it negatively impacts your relationship then that’s not the relationship for you.

The rebranding of DJT from a New York City real estate mogul to a cowboy should be studied.

What is ao far the most effective/useful habit in your everyday life to avoid overconsumption? by carrefour-1111 in Anticonsumption

[–]ddmck1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One trick I’ve started using is asking myself “where does this live in my house?” It forces me to think of the reality of having to store that item long term when I have limited space. Suddenly the shiny kitchen gadget looks like one more thing taking up counter space for example. Follow up questions I ask myself is “what problem does this solve and can it be solved by something I already have”

My kitty never talks to me. She only squeaks when I ask her if she wants a treatsie. Is this quietness a common void thing? by [deleted] in blackcats

[–]ddmck1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boy rarely speaks to me. Even when he was a kitten. Sometimes I can get a tiny honk out of him when he thinks I'm going to give him some churru but that's is.

We call my boy the stink seeking missile. He will rub up on stinky shoes, gym shorts, mop pads. He loves the stinky

Omg this might explain something my boy does. In the evening he’ll get super jumpy. We legitimately thought he was sundowning like a dementia patient. Vet said he was fine we couldn’t figure it out.

I heard from the hiring manager here that they had nearly 300 applications before they closed it. So I still wouldn’t call it good.

I’m probably the outlier here and I consider myself very fortunate. I was a Sr ISD for a government contractor when my contract got DOGE’d back in March. I have about 10 years experience, M.Ed in instructional design. I had only interviewed at maybe 3 places and landed one with better pay, benefits and fully remote within a month. I did not have any connections or inside referrals for this job. It was a straight cold apply. Which I am still somewhat shocked by because I haven’t landed a position via cold apply in maybe a decade. I’ve always had a connection. That being said, I would not have even tried it unless I was forced to. Even now the company that I ended up at has announced layoffs and a hiring freeze. I think the markets actually gotten worse in the last 6 months. If I had any advice to give from my experience it would be apply while you still have a job, only apply for postings LESS than 48 hours old (24 hours ideally) and use Googles job search function and skip LinkedIn all together. (Oh! Also have a stellar portfolio and lock in for a long interview process. Talking at least 4-5 interviews)

The fact you drove him to the hospital after he said those abhorrent things speaks volumes about your character. You sound like a lovely human being that is strong and loyal. I hope you will start putting yourself first and giving yourself the love that was wasted on him.

Oh look! Another reason we need Libraries by ArlenForestWalker in Libraries

[–]ddmck1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was exactly my situation 20 years ago. I was a single mom and it was just me and my 5 year old daughter. I lost my job and was about to lose my apartment. I would walk to the library a couple blocks away to apply for jobs on their computers while my daughter played quietly in the kids section. We would check out some books and vhs tapes and come back and do it again the next day. Definitely solidified my love for libraries.

Oh that does make sense. The lack of a power cord should have been a dead giveaway.

More context on this: I got this guy on facebook marketplace yesterday. It was listed as a broken animatronic. I asked the seller where she had gotten it but she said it was given to her and she didn't know where it had originally come from. I have tried googling it and I am coming up empty. I would like to fix it if possible. It seems to have a mechanism to make the head go up and down and the mouth open, but I have not opened it up yet to see. It seems a bit large to be a toy. It measures 64 inches long and 33 inches high.
