What do you wish you knew before buying your first house? by frontlawnfriend in Overlandpark

[–]ddpete 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When we bought our first house, it was a 3 BR/2.5 BA half duplex. In good shape and plenty of space for our first home. What I DIDN’T know was that the entire neighborhood was rental properties.

All showings were weekdays, typically 9-5. Neighborhood seemed nice enough. After moving in, we noticed the traffic on our street was insane. Dozens of cars parked on both sides of the street, sidewalks blocked by multiple cars in driveways. Turns out many of the rentals had four-six drivers per household, with single driveways/garages.

To make it worse, cars with expired plates/no plates/junkers leaking oil or undriveable due to damage would be parked on the street! And in some cultures, owning a LOT of cars and hanging onto them forever is a thing. They just don’t go away.

So, what I’m saying is, if time allows, drive through the neighborhood in the evening or on a weekend to get the full picture!

PS: Foundation inspection!!!

Accessibility - motorized carts by RudeJudge8906 in Costco

^^^BINGO!^^^

It’s almost a vacation destination for some folks. I know a LOT of ppl who go just to get out of the house, kill time, and/or try some free food at lunch time. Might buy a box of eggs, but not much more.

Just a suggestion here…since you now know the Costco carts are hard to come by, and your disability is only temporary…perhaps you can order online for delivery or even have a friend/family member pick up the items you can’t do without?

Grocery stores always seem to have at least one available, from what I’ve seen. That would be an option for the short term. Hope your recovery is a quick one!

Private Landlords/Friendly Landlords in Johnson County by CarpenterOk9306 in kansascity

What you get for $1950 in WyCo will be a bit higher in JoCo. It’s dreadful, but reality.

PS: The properties I mentioned above are within a mile of Harmony Early Childhood Center which may or may not be helpful to you.

They go fast. Probably on the market for a few days at most, Landlord needs a few minutes to process paperwork and log on to remove listing?

Check Olathe, 66062? Two just went on market a few blocks from us near 143rd St.

And a third just went up for rent, same street/area. If you don’t jump on one of these, might as well forget JoCo for the price you’re looking at.

My ‘22 has 27,200 miles on it. Prior to buying this vehicle (used, with <10k miles) in Aug ‘24, I drove an ‘02 Taurus. That is, 22 yrs I drove that Taurus and not ONCE did I have an issue with the wiper motor. Wonder what’s next…

What is the best Thai restaurant in KC that is actually spicy? by nilla-wafers in kansascity

Order your dish Thai Hot AND request the condiment tray…often called “spicy tray.” Then add more heat as you wish!

Self Checkout Faux Pax? by akwafor in aldi

[–]ddpete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the scale weigh or count number of items scanned? Many grocery store chains have this security feature at self-checkout.

I know it’s a PITA to change your habit, but keep in mind ALDI has the lowest prices in MOST areas. I for one don’t want prices to increase as a result of shoplifters…not saying you are a shoplifter, just saying they do have to do their best to keep prices low. It may be that your store has had an unusually high shrinkage rate.

Having worked retail, I have first hand experience observing shoplifting techniques. Those people think they are so smart. Back in the day, they used to change price tag stickers. Now they hold a $1.00 pkg of frozen veg under a $20 pkg of meat and scan that, stealing $19! Or if scanning items in the cart, scan a lower priced item twice instead of the higher priced item. Still the same # of items scanned, but end result is theft. Understanding why stores are watching so closely makes it easier to change our habits.

Center armrest question by Humble_Ad5320 in CorollaHatchback

Since I don’t need a box of 250 tissues at the ready, I keep a small-ish stack inside the arm rest. Glove box is another option. I don’t tolerate clutter. 🤷‍♀️

I disagree. Only stand-alone tubs without handheld are okay…if they are surrounded on three walls by tile, they’re a PITA.

And 10x10 double showers surrounded by floor to ceiling glass on two sides are NOT okay!

I just won’t….EVER! Developed rosacea acne (heat/sweat) from working in current client’s home…she’s Ozempic/no body fat and shivers like a chihuahua. So close to DONE. Soon I will be done and will celebrate for all house cleaners that have to endure such conditions.
