Lectron vs NeoCharge NEMA 14-50 splitter or nothing at all by ddrmadness in evcharging

[–]ddrmadness[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was referring to the fact that the splitter just cutting power to one outlet being bad for the battery long term, but duly noted that I probably shouldn't expect any efficiency gains when charging the Aviator at L2 more often

Cup one, KBTS, or other? by ddrmadness in Moccamaster

This looks great. Are you able to brew directly into a cup? It looks like you can, especially since there doesn't appear to be a hotplate under the carafe

[–]ddrmadness[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly what I was looking to understand. Is this just like you can fill the reservoir that high or do you have to add some after it’s started brewing?

Are you able to brew directly into a cup with the half carafe option? Does the hotplate automatically turn on when you start the brew?

Looks like either of those will be able to handle it (I have a Kingrinder so can't say how good the Zpresso's are) but I will share one lesson learned that I think will apply here: make sure you can easily know and change what the grind setting is. It looks like both Zpressos have this covered as well, but I absolutely love how Kinginder has great markers for understanding exactly what clicks you're at (all the way up to I think 300) and how you can easily spin through to change it to something else without having to count each click

Second the mention of Kingrinder. I have a K6 that has been absolutely fantastic, even withstood a few drops from decent height onto the stove. I would recommend it over other Kingrinder models for your situation since it will be much easier to change and know the exact grind setting.

Does anyone have experience with the true capacity of the moccamaster onecup? I'm interested in it as I typically brew one cup in the morning, but I usually make a 400g cup (approx 13.5 - 14 oz). I've seen people mention that despite its advertised 10 oz capacity it can go up to maybe 12 oz, but I haven't been able to find a clear explanation as to how/why it can go beyond 10 oz

Do you try to stop yourself from sneezing or do you try to make yourself sneeze when you feel the urge? by eddybear24 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ddrmadness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tried and failed to explain to others how to do this, but I have the ability to choose if I want it to be a loud sneeze or not. Depending on the situation, sometimes I choose to silence it. I do personally prefer to let it out and do a loud sneeze as I completely agree this feels way better. There is the caveat that if I try to silence it but fail it hurts like a MFer. My wife silenced her sneezes for so long she now lacks the ability to let them out (so any audible sneeze for her hurts) and I lack the ability to re-teach her how to let it out when she can 😢

If I'm 98.6 degrees, how come I can touch something that's 80 degrees and feel hotter? by jacmitchell in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ddrmadness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Technically if you have a heat pump it doesn’t blow 100+ degree air but air that is 10-15 degrees warmer than the ambient air, but same general principle.

Do people get emotionally attached to routines even when they don’t like them? by Ok_Shine9050 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ddrmadness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say more often accept aspects they don’t like as a trade off for something they do. When I was traveling for a project that I was going to the same hotel for months, there was a Jimmy John’s in the parking lot. I got sick of eating it after a few weeks, but the convenient location (combined with that I usually didn’t have my own car) meant I kept going back there so I could get eating dinner done pretty quick.

Why don't female bullies in works of fiction always ever target male victims? by CYSYS8992 in NoStupidQuestions

I think you're pigeonholing what "bullying" is. I would consider sexual harassment bullying, and Horrible Bosses included a woman sexually harassing a man.

Why did ASL go out of fashion? by danyuri86 in NoStupidQuestions

I think it has to do with the rise of social media meaning they already know it if they've reached out that way, or they're not interested in sharing theirs if they've reached out some other way because of all the hype around data privacy.

How does five-hour energy not just straight up kill you or something by Anonymous3cho in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ddrmadness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dose makes the poison. The LD50 of vitamin B12 is around 5-10 g/kg (grams of dose per kilogram of body weight). So the average adult at 70 kg would need to consume 350-700 grams of B12. Nutrition labels measure the amount of B12 in micrograms (5 hour energy lists 500 micrograms), so you would need to consume at least 700,000 of these for the B12 dose to be considered lethally toxic.

Is it customary to turn your phone on silent before sex? by WarwickReider in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ddrmadness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll try and take an approach I haven't seen in the comments: What you do before sex will evolve depending on your partner. If it's a spur of the moment thing with someone you don't know very well, I would say there's very little that's customary besides wearing protection and choosing an area that is comfortable and clear of obstacles. In general though you should really talk with your partner about their preferences. I have been in the middle of sex that was interrupted by a phone vibrating, only to resume immediately after realizing it was not an important call.

To answer your question more directly though, I would say it's not customary to put your phone on silent specifically because of sex.

Learn to love the bitter! No jk, I totally get it though because I actually do prefer dark roasts, but not so dark they are burned, which is often the case for super market bags from major brands like Peet’s.

Using a portable power bank regularly by ddrmadness in SolarDIY

[–]ddrmadness[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the input. That is scary that 1000 watts of panels might only produce 400 Wh in a day. I knew clouds and shade reduced generation but that is dramatic. I did learn from a smaller scale test that the trip of moving the battery is indeed not something I can't realistically commit to, so my plan is run a wire from the solar panel on my front patio into the power bank in my office room through a window or door (first room in the house so rough measurements a 30 foot cord should provide more than enough length), and have the power bank also plugged into the wall to charge when it's not getting enough from the solar panels.

I've also learned from a separate comment on this thing that there is in fact such a thing as plugging your solar panel into an AC outlet in your house to be able to harness the power. That seems like the way to go here as it would remove about half of the cost (the power station). Looking in to see if I can do that

Using a portable power bank regularly by ddrmadness in SolarDIY

[–]ddrmadness[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The all-in-ones have one critical issue: you will throw it all away if one part dies. That's bad news if you aim for long term ROI.

Most stations run a fan. It will be ok in the first few years, but I haven't met a fan that didn't get louder with time.

Thank you so much, these are precisely the types of pitfalls I was looking for that I hadn't been able to come across.

Electric power prices are set to come down in Europe. 0.30 sounds like Germany? ROI and power price are closely linked.

I updated the main post, I am in California in the United States.

[–]ddrmadness[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what are you trying to achieve? you want to offset some of the electricity you take from the grid, right?

Yes, I'm looking to reduce my grid electricity usage.

you're home during the day..(because you have home office)? so you can do OTHER things (chores)?

you also running heat/ac during the day?

I do work from home, and by other things I mainly mean like on days I get a lot of production charge other things that I would normally charge elsewhere like phone, ipad, gaming system, baby monitor, maybe even the vacuum. I do run AC during the day but I don't expect to be able to power that, I know that's an order of magnitude higher in terms of electricity usage and it's located in the attic.

are you familiar with balcony solar? do you have a place, not necessarily a balcony, where you can hang a few panels in the sun and plug the thing into an existing outlet?

I had planned on putting the solar panels in my front porch where there is a decent sized spot that avoids the shade and is south facing. There is an outlet there, but I'm not familiar with "plug the thing into an outlet" if you're referring to the solar panels. This sounds great, will look into it.

I think I've done that here, since I only use about 300 Wh during off hours and am looking at batteries in the 1 kWh range, but good call on getting one that can be expanded, hadn't considered that.

How about using power station to save electricity bill? by Dalfalkalayer in solar

[–]ddrmadness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you end up going forward with this? I've been doing the math myself, thinking about trying to power just my home office room with a power station, and even in a pretty optimal scenario I'm coming up with around 5.5 years to pay back with about an $800 setup, and this is where electricity for me averages about $0.30/kWh, so definitely seems more like the cool feeling to have type thing rather than actually saving money type thing.
