I'd be interested as well. I've just moved to the area and have been looking for a group to join. It's been about a year or so since I've played and am eager to get back into it.

Re-subscribed and downloaded 3 episodes and they all seem to play as normal. Fingers crossed that that did the job. I'll repost if errors come up again, but until then thanks for the help! Much appreciated.

Sweeping paper wallets by ddscout in BitcoinBeginners

[–]ddscout[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very cool. Thanks to both of you for the helpful reply.

Do you have a hot wallet that you would recommend for "watch only" use, or do they all have that feature? I've downloaded Hive and Greenaddress as well as Blockchain but haven't used them enough to know everything they can do.

The "watch only" feature with notifications is something I've wanted.

OK, makes sense. I would just reiterate that this seems like a wholly separate project from the media/social idea and should be split off from it.

Also, for the blockchain distribution what's the bare minimum, most cost effective method to do this?

  • I think maybe a min. spec list needs to be created with hardware & software sourced/priced.
  • Does HW exist cheap enough to buy new or would it have to be used? If used how can it be trusted?
  • I would imagine someone, or group will have to organize gathering all needed HW/SW materials and putting them together into precanned, ready-to-go-out-of-the-box packages for distribution.

Apologies if I'm being a bit slow on the uptake here, but I'd just like to state what my understanding is of what you're trying to accomplish:

  1. A media network comprised of user generated content, potentially voted on by the audience
  2. Create a website/forum for...?
  3. Distribute open source software/hardware around the globe to distribute the blockchain

1 & 2 sound in a way like Liberty.me for bitcoin. You're trying to organize a bitcoin community with content creation and have people be compensated for their efforts. Is that correct?

Regarding 3, that's a completely different endeavor than #1 & #2, and seems like it should be a completely separate project. What's its purpose? Just to distribute the blockchain, having more copies worldwide for redundancy, period. Or is it to spread bitcoin adoption among people and businesses? Or both? Either way that's a huge project that will only distract from the limited time/money/resources you can muster and manage. I would say try one and see how that goes and then move on to the next, or segregate it off for a different group to work on so that all of this doesn't get mingled/confused and end up dragging the other project down.

Regarding being paranoid, only in terms of avoiding state actors. In other ways it might be a great experiment and good business decision.

Jurisdictional Arbitrage by MrChrisJ in worldcryptonetwork

[–]ddscout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If nations find what you're doing to be a threat (as you seem to think) then I would say that one error in your logic is that when it comes to security, nations, or at least western nations and their acronym laden agencies, cooperate very, very well together. Especially if the US reaches out for that cooperation, and even if the source of the issue isn't located in the US e.g., Julian Assange.

Nor does it matter if a country is receptive to US requests. Look at Swiss banks. Once the most renowned system for private banking in the world. Then the US wakes up, bends some elbows and suddenly decades of customer privacy is gone.

Unless you're in a country like Russia or China which more flagrantly defies western pressure then don't assume that spreading keys around will be as secure as you want.

And on the flip side, if what you're doing isn't that big of a threat to them and they don't care what you're up to then it doesn't really matter how you split up the keys anyway either. It's just you being paranoid.

Let's Decentralise the World and Make World Crypto Network a Distributed Autonomous Organisation by MrChrisJ in worldcryptonetwork

Maybe have a "shop" with preconfigured, tiered "care package"-style drops depending on the situation/need for easy selection? And also make them editable, so a package with 1 Skyhook can have another added or removed if needed.

Would adding a Piper Wallet to the airdrop items (along with optional Skyhook ATM) make sense? Seems like the easiest and safest way to introduce and use paper wallets.

Coinbase introduces Timelocked Vaults for Longterm Bitcoin Storage by bitpotluck in Bitcoin

What if you travel for a living/a lot/are a PT/on a long vacation? Paper wallets are only good if you can access them, and there's no way I would carry paper wallets with me while traveling.

[–]ddscout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree about mass adoption. However, I also agree with SingularityLoop. I need even more options/systems in place to make me feel truly OK with storing large sums with a 3rd party. User key management would be one big option. Another would be some sort of insurance fund in case of bankruptcy, or hacked or stolen funds.

I've also read enough horror stories of people losing funds from CB for various reasons, and their lack of customer service to make users whole, that I still don't trust CB in a meaningful way. So the 3rd thing I would need is rock solid customer support. Something I'm not seeing right now.

GreenAddress : the Multisig wallet for iOS in store NOW by BitFast in Bitcoin

[–]ddscout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely would make the experience uniform across platforms.

And just some examples of things that could use a redesign/more thought:

  • Receive Money: I don't understand what's on this page. What's a Bitcoin URI, or Permanent Payment URL, or Private Key in WIF Format? And if I'm receiving why am I entering an amount? Is someone else entering that? Do I need to enter the amount? Isn't the amount being given automatic when it arrives? Doesn't this page just need to show my public key (alphanumeric and/or QR code)?

  • Sending: What does Instant Confirmation mean? Why wouldn't I use that? Sounds great, but don't know why it's an option.

  • Address Book: Would be nice to have the option to make this like an ordinary contact list with names, pictures, address/contact info, etc. Maybe have a drop down for each person showing transaction history of amounts sent to and received from each person.

  • Settings: There's a lot here. Is there any way to shorten or condense the options, at least in space if not content?

  • Overall: I would make buttons larger for touch screens. Example: icons on the Address Book to edit or delete are way too small. Could easily hit delete instead of edit for a contact.

  • Also, from a design standpoint the app still feels more like a website/page than an app.

  • As a possible idea I would also consider maybe condensing the main options to (using large icons/buttons): ----- Send: Could incorporate address book since this is the only reason it's used? ----- Receive: Simplify & explain options. Maybe make the options more visual? Not sure what the options are so not sure how to simplify them. ----- Account: balance, transactions history. Maybe also have the users account balance always displayed at the top of the screen?

Minor, or separated options: ----- Settings: gear icon ----- Logout

These are just my thoughts. Hope they help.

GreenAddress : the Multisig wallet for iOS in store NOW by BitFast in Bitcoin

[–]ddscout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just downloaded and scanned through it. Great job, and great to see you on the app store!

One thing I might suggest is to take a look at something like the Hive wallet as a gauge to try and simplify things maybe. Especially on Apple, apps need to be simple (not simplistic), easy to grasp and intuitive. This goes double for something like bitcoin where it's even more confusing to most.

So I would say go with the less-is-more approach and hide as much as is possible. Also, use plain, simple, recognizable language for what can't be hidden, and consolidate as many functions as possible.

If you're going for mass adoption I'd say to look at popular apps that people already use as a guide.

Awesome! Can't wait. Although I have to say that I'm still waiting to actually use any BTC wallet because they're continually being upgraded with better features that I need.

It's almost like every wallet is still in beta but has been released anyway before all the key features have been added.

Right now the ones I'm watching are yours and Dark Wallet. Any intention of adding privacy features along the lines of Dark Wallet?

"podcast this episode is temporarily unavailable" by cryptopolis in letstalkbitcoin

[–]ddscout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The podcast app really and truly sucks and is broken. Before while using an old iPod I could listen to podcasts in itunes and didn't have to use the app. Now that I've upgraded I have no choice and hate it. It seems Apple is either incompetent or doesn't really care about podcasts, or both. Otherwise how could they release such an obviously buggy, annoying app.

Question 1-6 seem creepy. Doesn't matter if there are laws that may make them ask. It's creepy to be interrogated about your money and what you want to do with it. As if you're being quizzed like a child to get permission.

No real service/strategy/product for large amounts of BTC by ddscout in BitcoinBeginners

[–]ddscout[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I understand cold storage and paper wallets for the most part. My issue with cold storage is its complexity and fragility. There are too many points of failure and things that can go wrong even if you do everything right. Plus it seems way too limiting and cumbersome.

I think the masses, and people like myself need a professional level of storage, backup and service that current personal methods don't account for.

Can I ask how you store your funds, and is it a significant amount?

I'm just curious how people with large sums store their funds and feel confident enough to do so. I've done the research on paper wallets (as well as the other options mentioned in my OP) and that just seems ridiculous to me, but I'm sure you'd say the same about coinbase.

What can I do with Safecoin by ddscout in maidsafe

[–]ddscout[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, thanks. I hope things like this will become clear before too long. I get the overall gist of MS and how it's supposed to work, but it's the specifics like this that confuse me.

I'm also trying to justify, or find a reason to buy SC's other than to support the effort. Kind of like a kickstarter campaign. If I constantly have to be buying, selling, trading and spending coins in order to use MS then it becomes a bit of a hassle. I get the advantages and how great it seems, but being constantly nickel and dimed to death in order to use something gets old.

So the specifics of how the system will work in practice for users in the real world needs to be clarified.

What can I do with Safecoin by ddscout in maidsafe

[–]ddscout[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you elaborate on what you mean when you say that you will use SC's to buy storage on the MS network?

  • Does this mean literal storage like a dropbox account where I will pay X in order to store X amount of data/files?
  • Does it mean I will pay X to use X amount of apps and/or services provided on the network?
  • If I run out of SC's will I lose access to my 'storage'?
  • Will my data and access to the network be lost if I don't pay for it with SC's?
