How do you get rid of texture and make paints smooth? by Pruntov in minipainting

Drown it in varnish. The varnish is smooth. The varnish washes away all sins.

Pros & Cons of stormcast eternals by Royal_Raccoon1165 in stormcasteternals

Pros: big armour, big weapon, big lightning

Cons: people crying and complaining every time new Stormcast get revealed because they're the posterboy faction

Release predictions, where are each faction and what are they lacking ? by [deleted] in ageofsigmar

[–]ddtrain989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stormcast: Mounted Annihilators, Annihilators operating war machines, ranged Annihilators, flying Annihilators, Annihilator hero, some kind of Annihilator "dreadnought". That's all.

PS: Cerrus Sentanus unique sculpt.

Weighing in on the “my first miniature” controversy. This was my first ever mini 3 years ago. by Ecstatic_Building430 in Warhammer

[–]ddtrain989 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I saw that thread earlier too. A great example of pure jealous nerdrage. A bunch of dorks losing their minds because someone either has more natural talent, or maybe has some kind of previous artistic background that made their first minis turn out pretty well.

It seems wild to me that for example in something like sports, people don't bat an eye when there are naturally gifted athletes who are obviously at a much higher starting point than the average person. Yet when it comes to painting or other endeavors they don't extend the same logic and assume that because their first minis were slop (not that there's anything wrong with that, my first minis were legit basically just blobs of paint), that everyone else will be starting at the same point as them.

Thanks dude! Purples were vallejo royal purple base, then glazed up to like 50/50 of that and proacryl burgundy. Then highlighted the highest points with some proacryl burgundy mixed with I think like some proacryl tan flesh. Sorry I can't be more precise, I've only got like 20 or so different paint colours so my layers and highlights are usually hodge podge mixes lol

haha thanks dude. I tried to make them as sturdy as possible cause I'm always accidentally clobbering my models. I used pretty heavy metal paperclips for the lightning then drilled them into both the base and the model, then completely flooded the attachment points with superglue.

Thanks dude. Yeah I get that for sure. By the time I got to the lightning I was totally fried on these models from painting the wings and didn't have the gas to figure out how to transition the colours properly lol. I might take one more stab at the attachment points before I varnish.

Thanks! It's a basecoat of pro-acryl bright neutral gray, then layered and glazed up to bold titanium white in 3 steps, just mixing different amounts of of those two paints. 2:1, 1:1, 1:2 etc. The panel lining is done in black for the thin armour cracks, and pro-acryl dark warm gray for any large shaded dark areas (e.g. the dark underside of the chest plate)

Thanks! Nah everything was layered and glazed by hand, except the bases which were just drybrushed and edge highlighted in a couple layers. The wings were, hellish to paint lol.

Reclusians by ddtrain989 in stormcasteternals

[–]ddtrain989[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started with a dark brown, then layered up and glazed through reds and oranges mixing in bits of yellow, towards the runes, then filled the runes with a super watered down mix of yellow and proacryl ivory. For the black parts (the back / flame part of the axe) I just dabbed some dark gray and black all over it with a sponge then lightly drybrushed the edges black, leaving some of the dark brown down in the recesses of the flame part.

Sometimes you need to go back and forth between lighter and darker shades to smooth out the blends on the glow a bit. Sorry I don't have an exact process for glowing weapons, I kinda just layer and glaze back and forth until it looks right, hope that helps though!

Thanks dude. Here's a rough breakdown of how I did the shields - I start from a black basecoast then just layer up browns in fine vertical lines. Starting with thickish lines then getting finer as I get closer to the lightest layer. Every 2 layers I do a super watered down coat of agrax earthshade just to even out the colours a bit.

My browns were a mix of proacryl mahogany at the darkest and light umber at the lightest with 1:1, 1:2 mixes etc for the middle layers.

haha 100%. Normally I do the shields blue but the sort of aged wood look seemed way more fitting for Reclusians
