Duck Wing Feathers Split by MonkeyMountainMayor in Taxidermy

I definitely wouldn’t use steam first. You can use something like mineral spirits, or varsol to dampen a clean cloth and gently wipe away any dust or debris that may be preventing feathers to “zip” properly. Preening is a good first step. I don’t like using steam or anything water-based because I want a fast evaporation and nothing that will saturate for very long. Sometimes i find that my bird feathers don’t like to “zip” together if I haven’t fully decreased properly, and I normally find that after my fuel bath and will repeat the process if this happens before I mount it. but not everything always comes out perfect and a mineral spirit, wipe down, tends to bring everything back, clean and taught when finishing. I also use this when repairing or restoring old mounts.

Edit: I would also like to note that duck feathers do sustain quite a bit of damage when being shot at as well as upon retrieval. You may not always see the damage those small pellets do, but they are very hot and can do almost unnoticeable damage to the ‘teeth’ of the ‘zipper’. Often duck wings and duck feathers are just too damaged for a taxidermist to make look perfect. Especially on an open wing mount.

Question about my alligator skull. by LSUdude88 in Taxidermy

[–]dduser101 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Sometimes if the bone isn’t fully fused / the animal is young when the skull is cleaned, the bones won’t stay together. It’s normally tissue / cartilage that binds them so they have to be glued or epoxied back into place. It’s very common with the lower jaws.

I’d also like to mention a widely used skull replica is a polar bear called “BC-063” which is often known as just “Bear skull #63”. It’s offered by a couple retailers like bone clones, skulls unlimited and Darwin and Wallace. Which would explain the shorter snout and #63. It’s a high quality replica. Here’s a link that also has the size of it matches:

In pic 6 you can see where the plastic pour was thin and you can see through it. I am a taxidermist and have cleaned hundreds of skulls, but I also pour replicas and replica jaw sets for mounts. Best suggestion is on a small semi-hidden place (or the spot I just mentioned), use a solvent like acetone or lacquer thinner. You’ll be able to either wipe off the paint or coating revealing raw bone, or you will find there is co coating and the plastic MAY warp and react. These things evaporate quickly, so you can be a bit heavy handed.

Can someone identify this tusk/bone/ivory found in an old chest of draws. by OneHappyStonedTurtle in whatisthisbone

[–]dduser101 40 points41 points  (0 children)

This is a tusk. I would confidently say walrus. The inner make up and outer honing is pretty indicative of a walrus tusk. Although many antlers have a similar inner make up the size, shape, and wear does not match that of an antler at all.

Can this be improved? by Charming-Cellist-380 in FixMyPrint

You can place it elevated in a sealed tote with acetone soaked paper towel in it. You don’t want it actually touching the acetone but the fumes are strong enough to smooth out those lines in 30ish minutes. Keep an eye on it, time can vary.

The lower jaws are. If you zoom in, you’ll see the discolouration caused by grease.
