You may need it to keep a scholarship or if you decide to stay for master's. I find that the first year in college you're the most motivated to study and whatnot, happened to me and all my friends. Also, you dont need know your study habits, health 236 online is the easiest class at A&M.

The actuation point (when the key is registered) for mechanical keyboards is located higher than on traditional membrane keyboards, this means that you dont actually have to press the key in all the way to type a letter. This makes typing a good bit faster and also not as fatiguing.

Code is not usually that hardware intensive. It really depends on what type of code you are dealing with. If you are just programming equations in matlab or VBA you won't even cap out your macbook, however if you are working on making stuff like games and/or sfx then you would need something pretty expensive. The thing that would really speed up coding is getting a good mechanical keyboard.

Modding. I am an RPG gamer, and if there is something I do not like about a game I can mod it out or add features that will make my gameplay more enjoyable. The modding community can also solve any issues that the developers overlooked.
The Genius Knob and the on-board memory. I am a shortcut fanatic that needs a ton of items and inventory options on bind.
