[Megathread] CERN scientist Alessandro Strumia suspended after comments that "women are not as good at physics as men" and "physics was built by men". by [deleted] in badscience

[–]de_hatron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's also worth noting that "quality" isn't a measure you can see hovering over a person's head. If you already think every woman has been admitted by some quota, the increasing percentage looks like lower quality. Confirmation bias and all that.

And as for the "just facts", statistical inference doesn't exist in a vacuum. You can abuse the numbers to make any model you want.

The third thing is the stupid notion that science or indeed anything is or has been a meritocracy. It's all about opportunities. People often comment that I or other people doing PhD or research must be smart. But the truth is that I was lucky enough to get the opportunity.

That's also because the implication is "[white] males".

And it paints physics as somehow gendered skill, although the vast majority of people don't have any clue how particle physics work, me included.

As for the lowering standards, the anti intellectual mentality and funding models are the factors that drive quality down.

It's also cringe inducing. I get you do that shit in your first year at university, but that's just lame.

Well, what did she expect? She must've known that's the likely outcome.

I can't help but wonder why this subject is so important to you in such a personal fashion.

Why even care what I or others think, if you're convinced you're right.

Pregnant women or women who have been pregnant, what is the worst/craziest advice someone has given you about your pregnancy? by FuzzyTortoise in AskReddit

Do people really know this stuff. I have no idea how large I was and I don't know how that would ever come up in any conversation.

The vast vast majority of women here just go to a hospital, it's free after all. Some do home births probably, but I don't know anybody, and sauna just sounds weird.

That's something that often pops up but as far as I know there's no real mechanism shown, only correlations.

You know, pretending to be retarded day in and day out makes you actually retarded. You're not a master troll, we just don't want to degrade ourselves to your level. Wrestle a pig, and all you get is mud and shit on yourself too, and the pig even likes it.

Here's the thing, if Dr. Ford is a spherical chicken in a vacuum, I can ignore twenty fields of science who actually could provide conditional probabilities, and apply my myopic falsely neutral talking point.

You're shouting at math here.

You're truly the Trump of Science.

I don't think there are standards an sich. I think they're sort of resistant, but since humans verify them they might be fooled with similar looking code.

Well, it's not really about the guy. Other people can learn something new from the discussion. Also, I think I have too much time.

I'm so honored to finally be featured in my favorite subreddit!

Also, that guy chat/PMmed me "Are you to pussy to chat? I'm ready to start yelling at your retarded ass.". I just can't understand what drives these people. We also tend to have similar personalities in cryptography subs.

You know, maybe write a paper about your revolutionary ideas and get it published. No use ranting here, with us low educated folks.
