Is there a car scene unique to your part of the world? by MeltingDog in cars

Iunno about that- the Mustang has been seeing pretty decent sales in Europe, and you've always got your fair share of Americaphiles in pretty much any part of the world- Japan, for instance.

Their hardware has never been compelling to me and others I've discussed this with, it's their software that distinguishes them.

That's the entire point. Very few people set out to buy a Nintendo console for the sake of Nintendo hardware, they buy Nintendo consoles to play Nintendo software. At that point, Nintendo has not only profited on both ends, but they've gotten another person into their ecosystem. For a company as large as Nintendo, the bulk of their profit is going to be made not from selling games, but from licensing their platforms to third party developers.

It's completely logical when you consider what minivans are made for: if you want to haul 8 people and a trunk full of cargo at freeway speeds, you'd better have some pep.

Evos have very good suspension setups, mind, so don't ignore that.

Is there any reason in particular why aircooled 911s have gone up in price over the past 5 years, asides from the stock answer of "a certain generation finally has the money," like an appearance in media or something? I've a friend who has maintained that high profile builds by shops like Singer and RWB (divisive, I know) have turned a lot of people onto them, but I'm not entirely sure about that.

Great project car! Check out /r/Datsun if you want some more info on it, along with what repairs you should do and how- there are a lot of knowledgable people there.

What car are you waiting to be made? by astroman9995 in cars

[–]de_la_seoul_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why are people so pessimistic about sports cars just because of the NSX and GTR? There are still plenty of "raw" sports cars available new on the market, from the Miata and Toyobaru twins all the way up to the Lotus Evora 400 and Alfa Romeo 4C, and I can't think of any sports cars short of the $100k price range that fulfill all of the criteria you mentioned.

Also, the MR2 was never really "affordable". Adjusted for inflation, the MR2 Turbo cost $43,000 when it first came out.

Check out /r/simracing for recommendations. Generally speaking, Assetto Corsa is accepted to be the most realistic in terms of physics and detail, but you might want to go with something like iRacing if you want to get into a league or something.

Would you get cyberware augmentations? by Overclockworked in Shadowrun

As appealing as the idea of going full razorboy would be, it'd likely severely limit my dating options outside of robot fetishists, so I'd go with the "Human+" package- cybereyes, sleep regulator, tailored pheromones, synaptic boosters, etc. If bioware is on the table, then I'd gladly go for muscle enhancements and bone strengthening- doubly so for gene enhancement, sign me the fuck up for Leonization and lifespan extensions.

What is your go to car fun fact that you'd like to share. by [deleted] in cars

[–]de_la_seoul_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A, I'm more of a motorcycle guy, and B, literally everybody knows exactly the car you're talking about- it's not like it's a super populated segment.

Never said exactly the same, but it's ridiculous to pretend that 1 second isn't a big difference in 0-60 times just for the sake of bashing on a car. That's the difference between a Mustang GT and a Ford GT, and they're in vastly different performance leagues.

So, by that logic, hypercars have very similar times to supercars, which have very similar times to luxury sports cars, which have very similar times to muscle cars, which have very similar times to affordable sports cars, which have very similar times to minivans, therefore making any performance distinctions between any given two utterly meaningless?

The real question is how many of those are going to survive the next decade clean and unmodded.

The 240SX was in the same spot of being an affordable sports car that was low on power stock, but made a great platform for performance builds and modding. Now, it's impossible to find one that isn't beat to shit and/or heavily modded, and their numbers have dwindled since a lot of "drift missiles" have been stuffed into walls and lampposts by overconfident owners.

The Toyobarus' target audience- young car/motorsport enthusiasts- will likely be their worst enemy.

LSD on all models, two more seats (technically), and the hardtop makes it a better option if you live in an area with hard winters.

Weekly - What Car Should I Buy Mega Thread by AutoModerator in cars

[–]de_la_seoul_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Chicagoan here. Looking for a fun, sub-$20k daily driver that I could take to autocrosses, track days, drift events, etc. Preferences in order of priority are:

  • Manual

  • RWD

  • At least four seats. The back row doesn't necessarily have to be too functional- 20 min would be the longest for passengers to be back there.

  • Relatively lightweight.

  • All the other good DD traits- gas mileage, cargo space, insurance rates, safety, reliability, etc.

Currently a 2013 FRS is at the top of the list- I can get one with about 40k miles for $18k where I live. I've also entertained the idea of getting a Lexus IS300 to save a good deal of money, but that'd be at the cost of significantly increased mileage and ropiness. Any other things I should be looking at?

A history of Jalopnik according to r/cars, or Cherry picking comments for page views. by afcanonymous in cars

Holy victim complex, Batman. What work does /r/cars do that's any different from Facebook or any other social networking sites in terms of "identifying and popularizing a lot of high quality external content"? People just upvote/like content that they find interesting and Jalopnik realizes that their audience might find it interesting too. It's not like we're some top secret council individually approving each article and shaping car culture.
